Dark (black or dark slate) floor in small bathroom?

approx. 5x8 bathroom, some of which will be taken up by a small shower so there isnt a lot of floor space...

we have white tiles (porcelenosa meridian)

1) will the dark floor make the space too small?

2) light wood vanity? i imagine a darker wood would really close it up

Any thoughts?

Thanks suzan30! We fell in love with it when we saw it (the other colors are stunning as well!), but were also concerned about such dark tile in a small space (hadn't been considering dark tile at first).

It is Glow tile (color is Cosmos) from Atlas Concorde (distributed by AKDO?). Ours are the 12x24's, if you can't tell in the pics, but it does come in other sizes as well.

It will be NO problem! I did the same thing in my 5x8 bath last Fall. Used a slate gray 12x12 tile set on the diagonal with pewter grout. Love it! I Really, really love it! Previously, there was a light beige vinyl that did nothing for the space, obviously. The dark tile adds character & depth where there was none. It truly transformed the room!

I have a powder room with dark gray/silver/charcoal/black Ostrich Gray Slate floors, white fixtures, white trim, white walls. I absolutely love the look. Personally, I'd probably keep the walls a lighter color, but white is certainly not a necessity. I think you'll be fine with dark floors.

I'd decide what finish I want first, stained or painted, and style of the cabinet (raised panels, Shaker, flat)-and go from there. Since my preferences are usually medium dark but not too dark wood stains, and mid range (not too dark not too light) paint colors for big furniture elements like cabinets-I would end up with not too dark and not too light anyway)) Then I'd pick a countertop that would complement the vanity and the overall look of it to another big element like floor etc. It is a matter of preference and overall mood you want in the space. I see by your floor(a mock up..if it is what you plan to do) you appreciate some contrast, over the completely tone on tone space. What I wouldn't do-I wouldn't do full dark on dark in a (relatively) small room, I'd try to keep one or two of the elements lighter, as was suggested already in previous comments. If your floor will be light as in the picture-I'd also keep the countertop lighter if I decide on a darker vanity. (I could do darker walls though..)) Mirror, the reflective surfaces of fixtures and faucets, and sconces-they will all help to get a general feel of enough light..

I have slate floors in my kitchen, laundry room and small 3/4 bath off laundry room i have 3 adult children 2 dogs and my slate floors sort of hide all the dog hair, toast crumbs..my floors are the natural style different shapes and color variations LOVE THEM

there is no ideal threshhold. I used a marble threshhold to finish a white tiled bathroom and a wood hall floor. the shower curb is just that, a curb that separates the inside from the outside. I tile up to the exterior with the floor tile and to the inside with the shower tile. Do what makes the cleanest finish. bullnose tiles that compliment the chosen tiles will have a cleaner finish (sharp/cut edges will scratch bare feet). Lay out and cut the tiles completely before you start so you know what you are working with.

I LOVE our dark tile in our powder room. It is a dark copper/gray/black large rectangular porcelain tile (made to look like faux slate). It's gorgeous in a tiny space.

I put dark charcoal/silver/black Ostrich Gray quartzite 12x12 tiles into my powder room. Combined with white fixtures and white walls, the bathroom looks much larger than it used to. I would not be concerned at all.

I don't mean to hijack this discussion, but I have some more questions for Catmom. What kind of tile did you use in the bath area? And is your vanity in the corner (flush against two walls)? If so, how is that working out?

suzan30, the field tile on tub surround is Porcelanosa Bari Blanco. Mosaic/border tile is Moon Saturn Blanco (?)--White Thassos, from Porcelanosa also. The marble/tile lining the niche and used as trim around the tub surround is Select White Thassos.
