Used car shopping.

The time has come to buy Alice a car. If I weren't planning to begin commuting to Napa this month several days a week, I would wait. We can easily share the car when I am working from home. But I will be gone one or two nights per week and she needs to get to school and the barn each day.

She is lusting for something to take her to the snow with friends. Is there any reason the link below is a bad idea? I will ask about the salvage title. I understand that isn't always a really BAD thing but I still don't know what it means entirely. We really need a "car" person to go with us... We have no fellas in our lives!

I'm not a "car person" but my son sure is....and I have bought a few cars on my own ( with his guidance!) and I would sure steer a long way away from any salvage title.
In some states, that's called "red title" and it means that the car has been wrecked and the damage was more than the value of the car, so the insurance company "totalled it"....meaning they gave the owner the value assuming the carw as worthless.
often someone will find a person to repair said car and it's drivable....but there for sure will be big resale issues and perhaps insurance issues....and maybe driveability issues.
For a "non car person" likely you can't see the telltale signs that a car has been wrecked.
I would avoid that like the plague!

My DH is in the car business and Linda is spot on about the salvage title. It means the car was totaled out buy the insurance company and the owner, or someone, bought it back from the insurance company. They may have fixed everything but it still could have a bent frame or something out of wack that is not visible.

We bought back a car that the insurance company totaled but DH knew that it was because the cost of parts to fix it was more than the car was worth. He being in the business had the guys at work check to see if the frame was Ok and with his discount on parts we had it fixed. Save us from buying a new car for a few years the car wasnÂt that old or that hurt. Plus there were insurance issues but I canÂt remember them all it was a long time ago. Check with your agent and see what they say.

Alice is much too precious to you to take a chance on putting her in a car that you are not 100% sure is safe.

We looked for four years until we found a piece of land that met our requirements and we could afford. We bought it in August using a home equity line of credit. Its 1.5 acres (4 lots in a 1950s plan that was never built) and we plan to split it with my sister and build two homes eventually. The primary thing holding us up is the fact that a sewage line is going under construction this year or next and it would be foolish to build before sewage was available. Also we need to pay off our half of the land and transfer the other half to my sister before we can move forward. Both of those factors puts us with an earliest build time of 2011. I find that no one wants to talk to us until were more sure about when we can build, and that is making it hard for me to get a firm idea of how much it might cost us to build. That said, my plans have been evolving as I try to get a handle on building cost. We did meet with a builder a year ago (before we bought the land) to try and get a ballpark idea. Based on that meeting, coupled with reading this forum and the house tours weve gone on since then, we have totally revamped our plans/expectations to try and make them as cost effective as possible. My husband got me Better Homes and Gardens home designing software, which has been really helpful. I started with the footprint and basic layout of a typical production builder home in this area figuring it must be cost effective for them to be using it, then modified it to our needs. Im happy with the results, but my husband tends to be a little unrealistic, wanting things and design elements that I dont think we can afford. I have an education in and inclination for art and design. Like you, Redloger, Ive spent years looking through magazines and also taking books out of the library and scanning pictures I like. Ive actually made poster boards for each room so that I can look at all my idea pictures together. My husband and I just got into a semi-argument about the whole thing last night. If we argue about pictures, I imagine trying to really do the whole project must be really difficult. Hes feels like well never be able to afford it (or what he really wants anyway) and therefore doesnt want to seriously consider the design. Hes not a numbers person or a plan ahead kind of person. I want to work on the project ahead of time like you, Loralee, and try to get a firm handle on the design and cost so that we can work to make it a reality. So I feel that his ideas tend to be out of touch with reality and he feels like Im not interested in his input. He doesn't want to pick anything, but because he can be opinionated about things, I dont want to pick out too much without his input only to find hes going to veto it down the road. He seems to think it will be easy to make all these decisions while the actual build is going on, but I think good design takes time and planning. The thing is that we really like the same style and basically agree about materials etc, but somehow it is always contentious when we talk about it. The other thing complicating this whole mess is the fact that we have some skills from working on our rental properties and remodeling our home. Wed like to put those skills to use to save us some money. My husband wants to take on the whole thing, just get the house built to drywall and finish everything ourselves. But with 2 full time jobs and young children, again I dont think thats realistic. Im trying to figure out what projects would be the most realistic for us to tackle ourselves. Im thinking the painting and staining and tiling. Then down the road after were already in the house and as we can afford it, finishing the basement and installing all the bonus cabinets and built ins in the mudroom, craftroom, family room etc. But I don't know if that's too much, too little, or if it would save us significant money anyway. So, considering all that, I have a few more questions. I know that a house cant be built from what I have designed on BHG, so where do I go to get working blueprints drawn? Some builders I talked to seem to work with certain designers, so when the time comes should I just take my sketch ups to builders for estimates or would it make more sense to get final blueprints first? Second, cost is often estimated on square foot, but what is considered in that square footage? The software says my plan is about 2500-2700 square feet, but the house that I started with which has the exact same footprint is quoted as only about 2100. How could there be such a big difference? And if Im also planning a 3 car garage, front and back porches, would that be figured into the square foot estimate? If not, how much does that add to the overall cost? Thanks for all your help. (And charliedawg, your situation sounds like exactly what we would do except for the fact that houses dont increase in value that much here and never did even during the boom years. So even having lived there for 5 years, if we sold our house and paid off our first mortgage, wed only net $20,000 if everything went perfectly. Certainly not enough to pay off the land, get 20% equity and a $20,000 cushion. It sounds like you did very well.)

What troubles me more is having to buy something different. I prefer to keep a reliable vehicle going when I feel I know what I have. But occasionally you have to get something different. The last one I did something a bit different. I bought a lease return. Couldn't be more pleased. Still go through the same as buying a used vehicle - check it over, but I saved $18k over buying new and it sure doesn't bother me that it was 2 model years old with 20k miles. With reasonable care and reasonable luck, this should last me a long, long time. I can't see myself ever buying a new car again. Although I don't like dealing with car jockeys, I know that they're bottom-feeders. They seldom last long at one dealership. I know their games and don't play them. I know that they're not doing me any favors and I don't owe them a thing. I was buying a new vehicle about every 15-17 years so they know I'm not a repeat customer and although I have brands I prefer and brands I dislike, I'm not a brand-snob. I look for value and a vehicle that will serve my needs. These days reliability is comparable pretty much across the board for the most part. I also look for features and I look for potential troublespots. I also go with the attitude that I'm never going to find the "perfect" vehicle, just like you'll never find the "perfect" house. So I refuse to stress out over something like a vehicle purchase. What's the worst case scenario? Don't like it? Lemon? Yes you can get a lemon in a new vehicle or a used one. So then you sell it and get something else. Big deal. Relax. A vehicle isn't worth stressing yourself. There's plenty of other things to cause you stress, many of which are far better.

Timely discussion for me... I am in a major dispute with Raymour & Flanigan - big furniture and mattress chain in the northeast. I am 60, the hips are getting sore, my old mattress was old so I decided to buy new. Went to all the "mattress" chains, hoping not to spend more than $600ish. Went to Raymour and I walked out with a $1300 mattress. Almost immediately the mattress started to shift each night so that when I woke in the AM I had to be carefull not to fall of the edge on my bum (which I had done a few times). I thought maybe it was the risers, so I took those out. Thought maybe the sheets were too large. I Bought about 5 different styles of sheets - no change. So they send a service guy and he tells me I need to buy something to put between the boxspring and mattress. Told him I needed to talk with someone higher up, quickly. Regional office calls, they said all twins will shift. Said maybe I was to "big" for a twin, even after I explained I had been sleeping on a twin for over 20 years. If fact I gave my old mattress to my adult boy and he has been sleeping on it just fine. My main argument of course, was that if "all twins will shift" as she stated, I should have been told this at point of sale. So now I am talking to people on the corporate level. Waiting to see what they say. Will keep you informed. What I will say is that you really should listen to your friends as to what they do or don't like about their beds. Do research online, and when you do go to choose don't just lay on the bed for 5 min and say "okay, this is great" - and look at this like buying a car. Awful but necessary. BTW they were also trying to sell me on the gel bed. Too new on the market for me.

Linda and I don't always agree :-) but her advice is sage. Run, don't walk from a salvage title. The fact that the person put that in the listing tells me they are at least being honest about it, but there are too many vehicles (with great deals!) out there to buy a salvage vehicle. Also, Land Rovers are not known to be particularly reliable and parts and repair are expensive, not to mention that insurance would also be expensive. A nice safe 4x4 would be a Ford Explorer and believe me, a couple year old one with low miles is 'cheap-cheap-cheap'. They aren't the greatest on gas but insurance is very low (they are considered a station wagon, but don't tell Alice! The cool factor would be gone). Always make sure the vehicle has a Carfax report and if not pay to get one before putting down any money.

Absolutely NOT a good car or a good buy in any way, as the previous wise folks said.

Is there a Carmax up there Eileen? I bought 2 cars from them with great results.

If not, get a "car person" to shop the ads for you and go with you to check out the car.

Also, steer clear of a car the shape of the Land Rover for Alice's first car. And no SUVs for teen in my opinion. They are tricky enough for adults, and trickier (more dangerous) for youngsters.

I would recommend a Subaru Outback for all-weather driving.

We are on the 2nd Subaru Outback here and also a Subaru Tribeca....both great here in the north country. So I'll second what Gina said.

I wish GM could make something as good as the Subaru....but I guess that's another subject. :)

I was just going to say any Subaru, AWD Toyota Matrix or AWD Pontiac Vibe. An AWD Volvo if you have someone that can go with you and service for one, same for VW Passat 4 motion.

Absolutely go for a Subaru, Outback or Legacy, I can't recommend them highly enough!

I would agree..about the Subaru for a kid.

Not a "cool" factor...but...will be safe and easy to handle.

Subaru's are great. Also look at Toyota Rav4 and Honda CRV and Honda Element. All great vehicles and decent gas mileage.

DD's first car was a two year old Explorer that she had for 6 years. It was a fantastic vehicle, not 4WD, but that was ok by me. BTW Do you know that 4WD cost more to insure and eat more fuel? At least here in CA the insurance is absolutely more. Check it out.

The deed is done, almost. I committed to a different Land Rover. I left a deposit check to be replaced with a cashier's check on Monday after I check out the insurance details, etc.

Probably not the wisest purchase I'll ever make but Alice is over the moon. While not a perfect human being she is highly responsible and actually I consider a better, more focused driver than I am. I need to commute and be gone at least one night a week, she needs to get to school and to the barn to ride and potentially to a part time to buy her own gas. There is no bus service to the barn and what exists here is spotty. Her father no longer has a reliable car and isn't in a position to get one right now. Her friends with cars are flaky about rides.

She has driven SUVs belonging to friends. So is no stranger to the handling. The visibility is great. It has been well-maintained. And the tires are brand new.

Being able to keep her dream car, as she knows it is conditional, will motivate her to keep doing the right thing.

I will replace my vintage Volvo, which I love but is quite elderly, with a slightly less vintage Volvo in a few months. There seems to be a lot of them out there to choose from in my price range.

I told if I have a date (not likely!) I get to borrow her car!
