I've heard of this being done before and I'm always amazed at this feat of engineering. I'd love to see pictures when it happens. At the University of Iowa, in 1905, they inched a 3-story building (Calvin Hall) across the street by placed timber cribbing and hundreds of rollers under the structure. In 1905, this was all done for $25K. Just this weekend, I saw another building in my parents hometown they proposing moving, but the cost has gone up to $300K! Hope his home makes the move without incident.

A lot of times, people who have property for development that contains a historic home will give it away or sell it really cheap to someone who is willing to move it. I wonder if that is how your neighbor got his house.

A couple years ago around here, a 1700s stone inn (at which George Washington dined) found itself in the way of a highway widening project. The inn was slated to be demolished, but a bunch of folks raised heck (and money) and eventually, they ended up moving the inn about a half mile away. Now this was through several major intersections - they had to TAKE DOWN traffic lights and power wires. It took several hours and cost over a quarter million dollars. It was quite the production and it did make the news. Your neighbor's house will be interesting to watch!

My grandparent's moved a house they got cheap when the Seattle airport expanded. It actually made most of the journey on a barge and then went the long way around to avoid a seriously steep hill.

Our neighbors across the street from our house under construction moved their house 20 years ago... It's this big beautiful old thing. His family's business is moving buildings - very cool. When I was a kid, one of the high school teachers fell in love with an old (very large) victorian in another town. They moved it about 30 miles, and actually crossed our mile long bridge! It was a huge production, and I'm sure very costly! I think that was the last house they allowed across that bridge, they're lucky they were able to do that, otherwise, it would have been about 100 miles around!

This guy has lived in this house for a number of years. But he wants it moved as the traffic is too much on his road today. He said "over 100 cars go past the house every day. It's just too noisy."
He'll like it over here. We get maybe 4 cars a day. And 3 are neighbors. Oh, and we do get the occasional moose walking past the house. So maybe that counts as 5 cars.

If it's the right time of year, it counts as dinner. :-)

I had never seen houses moved until I moved here.
They moved a 2 story house down the road from me about 10 years ago..
the first truck had guys with chainsaws cutting down branches of trees the second and third trucks had 1/2 the house each. roof removed.
I actually tested this house for air infiltration once it was set up and found that where they joined it back together was the main leakage areas. thankfully it was
on piers so that the sealing of the floors was easy
it was the attic & interior walls that were difficult to
re-seal.
People around here move homes quite often.
usually a give away home or really cheap price just to get rid of the house.
I know several people who purchased these homes for less than five thousand dollars..and one guy who paid $1.00
set up of moved home runs 5 to 10 thousand...so I'm told.
My house was moved here about 20 years ago from a small town about 30 miles away. Sure wish they would have oriented it north south insead of east west!

i watched a 6000 square foot house being moved further back from the ocean shoreline where it sat a few years ago. that was a sight i'll never forget. it was fascinating!
