Techno-dummy here with a question: If one has Trend Micro or McAfee (or some other commercial product, I suppose), are there significant advantages to also running Malwarebytes from time to time? Seems this post outlines one disadvantage. Tracey's skills, together with the great help provided here, got her through this issue. I, on the other hand, would just freak out and after reading all this, probably just not run Malwarebytes unless it catches a whole bunch of stuff that the other programs missed. TIA!

Hi Katlin It's time you move to a Malware removal forum. Running automated tools like that and hoping something sticks is not the best approach. You need to visit Landzdown forum. Post the required log files and then a determination of the infection is diagnosed, then the right tools will be used. I'm starting to get worried TDSS Killer is no toy, TDSS Killer is a rootkit scanner. Rootkit scanners have to be used with caution as they generate false positives. From your post: Threats detected Locked file Service: swenum medium risk I clicked on Delete . To sum things up: A locked file or service does not necessarily mean a threat. "Object is locked skipped" or "Access Denied" notations in an anti-virus/anti-malware scan are not uncommon. Some files and services are locked by the operating system or running programs during use for protection, so scanners cannot access them. When the scanner finds such an object, it makes a note and then just skips to the next one. That explains why it may show as "skipped", "locked" or "Access Denied" in certain anti-virus or anti-malware log scan reports. These types of detections are normal and not usually malware related so there is seldom a need for concern. Glad that it finally got its act together, Shax. Sometimes there's no apparent reason for why an app or program suddenly hiccups. I have found...over the years...that holidays are busy internet times often overloading the airways...that slow down certain processes...testing our patience. Perhaps that's what caused your update problem. If it repeats...run Chameleon. And/or take a look at your Event log to see if you can get a clue there as to what's causing the problem.

Shaddy: You should be able to download the installation program here: https://www.malwarebytes.org To uninstall the program because it was causing trouble, I went from Start>Control Panel >Programs and Features, and then found Malwarebytes in the list of programs and clicked on its name to select it, at which point a row of possible things to do appeared up above the list. One of them was Uninstall, so I clicked on that to uninstall the program. I am running Windows 7 and your PC's operating system may do things a bit differently so far as the names of things are concerned, but the general idea is to use the Control Panel to uninstall programs. In my case, it was a bit more complicated than that, because Windows said it couldn't uninstall Malwarebytes as something was missing. To fix that, I downloaded a new copy of its installation software and installed that, then I was able to uninstall the whole thing. I have been too busy to reinstall and try using it again, but expect to get around to doing that today. And I sure hope those nagging pop-ups will have disappeared. If not, I guess my only option will be to keep uninstalling the program and reinstalling it from time to time as needed. Hope it doesn't come to that, because it's really a good program.
