The hacking thread and adobe

I am posting this after reading about the IE hack and the info about adobe in another thread. I thought it would better addressed in a new thread.

I have adobe in my control panel but I can't find it anywhere on my PC. I did a start search and I looked through the program files and found nothing. When I first installed Avast it's software updater kept telling me it needed to be updated. When I tried it just looped me around the site. I finally turned the updater off. Can anyone explain this to me? I have W 7, use FF.

Open a new tab in FF and type ..about:plugins .. and hit enter. That should show you what you have and there should be a link at the top of the page to tell you what needs to be updated.

Thank you it did download along with a Mcafee security tool???

mikie: can't say I understand the ghack... site well. It says to determine if my IE settings are already safely set in 'advanced' security mode by going thru Tools, Options, Advanced, and then down somewhere in the Security area to look or do something that is not clearly defined. I see that there is a check box for Allowing some 64 bit security setting that is checked in the ghack picture. It is not further described and it is not the highlighted item in that list. In my IE 11, that box is not checked, but by going more directly thru Tools, Security, I can see that 'advanced security' is selected. I suppose that 64 bit box might need to be checked, but it appears to be allowing more rather than less access and that seems like a weakness rather than an improvement. So, I don't know what I am supposed to do here. And it seems odd that a supposed huge hole that requires massive Microsoft scrambling can be fixed by checking a box or not!!! The ghack site then goes on about something called Enhanced Mitigated Experience Toolkit. It doesn't tell how to get it safely and also implies it is not needed if my security is set appropriately. Gee Thanks. Finally, it comments on Flash. I have already upgraded but I would like to point out that the Adobe terminology and others as well tend to suggest that it is an update rather than a newly named version. It seems odd that what seems like a patch, is a new version; but whatever, I guess.

This is just one reason I seldom use Firefox. Seems they've had lots of problems lately with add-ons, apps, and other necessities. I mostly have used Chrome and just do not have these sorts of problems.

you will likely need flash and shockwave when visiting some sites that have video and animations and stuff like that. You can get flash and shockwave from their website. It is always best to get them directly from their website so you know you are getting the real thing and not a fake one and there are some out there. I choose not to use anything from McAfee and will uninstall anything from them...but that's just an opinion. If you find it useful then keep it. Probably not harmful but it may pester you with offers to upgrade to something you have to pay for.

Emma next update watch the screens closely, you were offered the chance to not have McAfee installed. Having to scrutinise every window is a pain but a necessary one these days sadly.

I was not offered the chance to not have it. It had to have been hidden until the installation began. Then I couldn't stop it without stopping the adobe. If it had been visible I would have seen it. When I saw install MF, I remembered I had tried that before and tried to find it without and could not.

What about the other things in the list. I cannot find them on my PC. Does that mean I don't need them or they are not on the pc, just left overs from something else.

Emma, that same thing happened to me when I tried to update flash on my own. It did not give an option to not install McAfee. I stopped the install. When my Avast software updater installed the Adobe flash update, it did not install the McAfee security tool. I have searched 'McAfee' and nothing shows up.

The McAfee security tool is (I believe) a plug-in that gets installed in your browser. In Firefox, open a tab and enter .. about:plugins ..to find it. In IE go to TOOLS >> Manage Add-Ons.

I don't understand, when I go to the Adobe Flash page I see this. Do you see something different?

Ah ha...I see what the problem is on my husbands computer. The box with the check in it doesn't show up. When I put the mouse pointer in that area, the little hand shows up to click there. He had me fix FF so he doesn't see all the graphics on a page...

Jean that is probably the reason I didn't see it. I block pictures on any site I use a lot. I tried several sites to download without it without MF and finally gave up. My Avast software updater could not download it at all.
