You can't get into trouble with IE if you don't use it. It's not only not practical to uninstall IE...it's probably impossible as other system functions depend on it to some degree. Just stay current with Windows Updates.

Adobe Flash issued an update earlier this afternoon....which undoubtedly addresses this problem. So...if you don't have Adobe Flash set to auto update...go to their link and upload the most recent version...13.0.0.206

Not true but all those others are frequently, IE does not use open SSL, been using it for yrs. on all 5 of my PC's never ever a problem. Sorry, I stand corrected by Brian Williams on the news, just mins ago, this is a new one, and IE may be effected however do not fear microsoft is working on a fix as I write this. I am not worried!

No doubt but at what speed? This has been going on since IE6 according to this report.

I read the story on Huffington Post on 27th. Last night news on tv, first thing they said was to switch browser or disable Adobe Flash. I'm wondering the same thing, "going on since IE6". They must work at a snails pace. I switched browsers first thing this morning. Life is a learning experience, so now I get to learn a new browser! Someone else asked can you uninstall IE. Yes, I did it recently on IE9. Takes a long time, but it can be done. I did reinstall it, so no idea if the removal affected anything else. It did fix the problem I had with it, though. Safe surfing!

Some installed programs for the web, mostly communication programs, do use IE because they rely on its Active X components.

I have used IE forever... somewhere, not to terribly long ago, I read IE11 on windows 8 .. super secure supposedly.

I fix many computers, quite frequently, that have mostly problems created by the free junk that gets installed with other programs... The majority will have some virus in a scan. And almost none of them use IE. So its really hard for me to say IE is unsafer than the popular firefox and chrome.

If someone asked I would probablyI have to go against popular opinion and have to guess its actually safer to use IE, It may be the IE user knows how to install 3rd party programs and do use virus programs properly in fear of virus. .. just a guess on my part.

mikie, and perhaps others: I admit that I don't understand this situation. That is why I posted the initial question. However, my impression is that this is a NEWLY FOUND weakness in IE specifically. Old lack of problems is no defense against a new big hole that every hacker (for good or ill) is just finding out about. Now, perhaps I have misunderstood even this point, but if correct, then your previous confidence would be moot.

Here's the article about settings in IE to avoid the potential problem. I noticed IE Flash Player auto updated today also to avoid the problem.

Adobe Flash was hacked as early as 26 0r 27 February. I know this because my Vista machine with IE9 was hit with massive adware/malware on that date. I was on local gov. site, got message I needed to update Flash, and it downloaded the crapware on me. About a month later, hubby was on V.A. site and got hit on our other machine. Yippee, I get to do removal again. That was just after M$ quit supporting XP, so I gave up on the removal and we ordered a new one. Get to learn computing all over again with Win8.1. Thanks for the tips on protection, we all need that.

mikie: can't say I understand the ghack... site well. It says to determine if my IE settings are already safely set in 'advanced' security mode by going thru Tools, Options, Advanced, and then down somewhere in the Security area to look or do something that is not clearly defined. I see that there is a check box for Allowing some 64 bit security setting that is checked in the ghack picture. It is not further described and it is not the highlighted item in that list.

In my IE 11, that box is not checked, but by going more directly thru Tools, Security, I can see that 'advanced security' is selected. I suppose that 64 bit box might need to be checked, but it appears to be allowing more rather than less access and that seems like a weakness rather than an improvement. So, I don't know what I am supposed to do here. And it seems odd that a supposed huge hole that requires massive Microsoft scrambling can be fixed by checking a box or not!!!

The ghack site then goes on about something called Enhanced Mitigated Experience Toolkit. It doesn't tell how to get it safely and also implies it is not needed if my security is set appropriately. Gee Thanks.

Finally, it comments on Flash. I have already upgraded but I would like to point out that the Adobe terminology and others as well tend to suggest that it is an update rather than a newly named version. It seems odd that what seems like a patch, is a new version; but whatever, I guess.

Microsoft will have their Fix out may 13. Yes it somplicated in the internet settings for IE... always has been.

...and it's nice to see that updates are for IE v.6 - v.11. Be sure to read this KB article and note that this update will crash your system if your IE updates aren't current. Then access through Windows Update locations if your system isn't set to auto-update.

On my Win7 sp1 v11 checking the 'Enable Advanced Protected mode' disables Wot.

Enable 64 - bit processes for Enhanced Protection mode is not listed.

Internet Explorer has built in 'Smart Screen Filter' , unless you have disabled it...
I think that functions similar to WOT .. prevents or warns about known security-iffy webpage content.

I have Smart screen filter enabled it pops up when I try to download anything don't recall popups for webpages....I like Wot.
