Can I open this eCard?

My in-laws sent a Jacquie Lawson electronic greeting card to my daughter. She really wants to open it but I remember warnings about the bad stuff that could piggyback on these cards. Is this safe to open - or is there a way I could determine if it's safe? I'm vaguely recalling a way to scan something before you open it or click on it. How would I do that and does it apply here?

I'm on firefox (and my McAfee Site Advisor has to be re-installed) - in case that matters. XP.

My in-laws confirmed that they did send this card.

You may be able to right click on the attachment an see if an option is there to scan it.

Jacquie Lawson cards can normally be considered very safe - and fun to view too.

Generic cards can be sent free but for $10 membership you can get to personalise your cards for a year.

To set the record straight on e-cards and viruses - established companies like Blue Mountain do not send emails out that have viruses in them. I don't know about other companies, but there are quite a few out there. Blue Mountain did have a problem but it was over five years ago. Most viruses are sent through "phishing" - that is, the email SAYS it is from Blue Mountain or your bank, or Amazon, or some other trusted entity, when actually it is NOT sent from there. How to tell if you're being "phished"? Well, at the very bottom of a standard browser there is a title bar. When you put your mouse cursor over a link, the address that the link is going to appears in that bar. If it doesn't say amazon.com or bankofamerica.com or what-have you, it is not coming from that site. To try to fool you it may say amazon.something.com. That's not amazon.com. But something.amazon.com IS amazon.com. There HAVE been instances of phishers who have been able to show a fake address in that browser bar. But they were able to do this only on Internet Explorer browser as far as I know, and IE may have solved this issue, so make sure, if you MUST use IE, or any other Microsoft product, to keep it upgraded and up to date. And practice safe web surfing - when you search for something, don't go to just any site that pops up in the search results. Look at the description and check the address in that address bar before you click.

I just answered my own question: How to tell if a Hallmark E-Card notification is real: Hallmark e-card e-mails do not include any attachments. To be safe, if you receive an e-card notification with an attachment delete it immediately then empty your "trash" or "deleted e-mails" from your email client. A legitimate Hallmark e-mail notification will come from the senderÂs e-mail address, not Hallmark.com. The sender's first name and last name will appear in the subject line. If you do not recognize the name of the person sending the E-Card, do not click on any links in the e-mail. Delete the e-mail. The notification will include a link to the E-Card on Hallmark.com as well as a URL that can be pasted into a browser. The URL will begin with http://hallmark.com/ followed by characters that identify the individual E-Card. Hallmark E-Cards are not downloaded and they are not .exe files. In addition, Hallmark.com will never require an E-Card recipient to enter a user name or password nor any other personal information to retrieve an E-Card.

Jacquie Lawson is my choice too......The cards are beautiful... I think anyone has the right to trash anything they receive in their email list but if I received notification that a friend had gone to the trouble and sometimes cost of sending me an e-card, I would for sure check it out.... It's nice to know that someone thought of me and took the time to do an card...

I applaud your awareness and concern. I wish more users would be as alert as yourself. Based on the nature of the card and the fact it is from someone whom you know I see absolutely no problem.

Now if it was coming unsolicited and from a stranger, a JL card or not it shouldn't be opened.

I totally agree this means you are becoming increasingly aware of what to watch out for!! YAY!! those are the kinds of things I love to see.

I love the JL cards they are all so great, I have never seen or heard of one being used maliciously but of course any thing can be changed in the hands of evil doers. Scanning them as soon as you save it to the pc by right clicking is always the best way to go, if you can not right click and scan in your email you always have the option to save to disc rather than just open, do that, once saved immediately right click and choose to scan with your AV and or malware programs, then if clean open it if not send it to the recycle bin unopened then empty the recycle bin.

Thanks everyone. I did look at the card - and my daughter enjoyed it. More importantly, my MIL loves sending this kind of stuff so she's very relieved that they're safe.

It is truly amazing how much I've learnt hanging out here the past 9 months or so. Thanks to everyone for such generous, wise guidance.

I like the tip of saving to disc if I can't scan in email. I didn't have the choice to scan this is in email - even after re-installing McAfee Site Advisor.
