Can a tray ceiling be really simple?

Following the earlier thread on tray ceilings, I've been looking at tons of the google photos. Here's the thing: budget cuts forced us to give up the 10' ceilings we wanted in the whole house (saved a lot of $). We're going with 9'. But in 2 rooms (Master BR and Family Rm) we want 10', so we're doing trays there.

The problem is how to make them disappear, so we get the look of the 10' ceiling we wanted. Our house is not a reproduction of any period, but has the simple styling of modern Asian/Zen, Shaker (without the dark wood), modern Scandinavian, etc. So, we don't want trim around that tray except where we have to have it to cover joins/edges, whatever.

How do we do that? Not happy here.
