ethernet adapter not working

Hi, new member here.

I have a 7 year old dell with dsl and wired modem.

The ethernet adapter is GVC Realtek ethernet 10/100 pci

adapter. No router, just the modem.

I got a new ipod and downloaded all the software, etc for that yesterday, and ran the ipod software update (large

file, took a long time). When I came back after it

was finished, my pc had the BSOD.

I restarted it, but now my ethernet connection does not work. Not sure if it is related to the ipod downloads.

I uninstalled all the ipod software and reinstalled the

ethernet driver. The device shows up in the device manager

(network adapters). I enabled it, ran the Properties,

and it says that the device is working properly.

In the network connections window, it tries to aquire a

network address but fails.

I hooked the ethernet cable from the modem to another

computer (macbook) and it was ok, so the problem is with

my pc.

I ran the GVC Realtek diagnostices that came on the driver cd,

it has the message Driver Not Loaded!!!

I am using dial-up now (I should get the mac set up, it's new and a new os to me).

So does this mean that there is a hardware problem in the

ethernet adapter? Can this be fixed or replaced?

I have been thinking of getting a pc laptop it the future

What I have has been sufficient for now, and would like to wait if possible (from what I hear about vista, right or wrong)

Thanks for any help with this.

Also - I disable the connection when I am not using the internet. Is this ok?

Try a system restore to a time when things were working.

it sounds like possibly your ethernet card is going bad, they are very cheap and easy to replace so you might want to try that. I have seen them die after a heavy load like you probably had with that ipod.

in device manager do you have any yellow flags at all

I had my nic card go bad right after they installed my fios, could have been a coinkydink or not so your ipod issue may or may not be related.
I went to best buy and got a belkin one and installed it in just minutes.
You may want to go to device manager and disable/remove the old one there just prior to install of the new one, it will recognize the new one upon install.
This is an example of what you would be looking for, I would go ahead and spend a little more if needed and get the gigabit version nic card so you have it should you need it.

To answer your specific question, I'd shop mainly by price. I don't see investing too much in a network adapter for an older computer. You'll want a USB adapter. I don't know how you feel about this or what you might have done, but it might be worth the effort to poke around a bit. I'd check with HP for the latest, greatest driver and install that. If that doesn't help, I'd delete the network card in Device Manager, reboot, let Windows reinstall it, and see what that does. The computer does use a mini card so you don't have to replace the motherboard. I can't see it being cost effective unless you can find a used one somewhere and have the ability to replace it yourself.

Terrapots do you use Zonealarm as your firewall and ar you running XP SP2? On another form this was an issue for a number of us for a very long time and there seemed to be nothing to correct it. Then another member swapped from Zonealarm to Comodo - problem solved. As soon as she posted her findings I swapped to Comodo too and my problems have disappeared. Comodo is free. Like you I blamed and swapped the router - 3 different ones - to no avail. Kept using the Start/Run ipconfig bit for momentary benefits, unplugged the router and/or the modem with no long term benefits too. Zonealarm note for others. There is nothing wrong with Zonealarm for the big majority of users but for a few this has been an issue.

So there are 2 NIC cards and you cannot install drivers for either of them. At this point perhaps we should turn our attention to the motherboard. Have you tried using a different PCI slot? You might also try installing the video drivers to see if there is an issue there as well. Why did you decide to replace the CMOS battery? Nothing wrong with doing that but I was curious as to why you did it. Did you remove the power cord from the rear of the computer each time you went in making changes? As you had a PCI NIC card is this a home built computer? If so what motherboard is in there? If factory built give us a make and model of the computer.

The white box is marked "Today's Home and Leisure." That seems to be a local PA company that installs home automation and AV systems. If the cable from the Verizon modem goes into that white box (it looks like it does but I can't be sure), they may be the ones you have to call to get things changed. I'm sure they'll charge you. If you're lucky, it'll only be an arm or a leg, not both. I'll tell you, if someone put a box like that with a lock on it in my house, I'd call them the next day and tell them to either unlock it or take it out. I don't accept that kind of noise. With an exception for the electric meter, you don't lock me out of my own home's wiring. But then I'm a geek, though not a Geek Squad member.

I had tried the system restore but no luck.

No yellow flags in the device manager.

I'll try a new card.
