Any way to fix this? We allotted a 48' hood over 36' rangetop

I had NO idea what I was doing when I started this process -- the KD that our builder uses told me I needed to put a 48" hood over a 36" range top - I think he said it was Maryland Code???

Now that I have been incessantly reading GW and looking at people's kitchens - I realize NO ONE does this -- everyone has either the same size Hood or maybe 3 additional inches on each side NOT 6. We have not ordered our hood yet, but at this point I am not quite sure what can be done? Our hood is going to be an under cabinet hood -- plain stainless steel -- a professional look -- that butts up to our cabinets.

Is there any way to fix this? I would love to order a 42" hood, but what do I do with the crazy 3" on either side? Is this going to look crazy?
