Do your double wall sconces give off heat?

For those of you who have double sconce's near (close) to sides of mirror does it give off a lot of heat? Lets say you only have a 30" vanity. Should I be concerned ?

What kind of light-bulbs do you have in them? Are they closer to your body than you're used to? Do you smell anything burning?

Hi, I don't have the sconces up yet. We have to mount the scones on side alcove walls next to mirrors. That would have them a few inches closer to your person when standing at vanity. The bulbs could be changed to something with less heat if need be. However, I'm wondering if in general people notice it being any hotter with scones hung on mirror sides at approximately eye level.

Karen- Two things to mention. One is that that block wall can be a real problem because it retains and radiates much heat. If you notice your leaves getting yellowish and dry you can go to Home Depot or a similar place and find a rolled up reed fence. Just roll it out against the wall and hold it there with those long green plant stakes. Use plant tie wire to tie to the stakes. This completely stopped the leaf burn I was getting and my plants are sooooo much better looking this year because of the softer heat flow. Secondly, remember a plumeria in the ground wants to grow 10 feet tall and 20 feet in diameter. I find that a minimum of three feet to something is difficult to prune and controll because these plants like to be wider than tall. Your plants are about 1 foot from the wall which may eventually be a problem as the plant will expand forward. If you bring a string out from the stem to 3' and draw a circle, you will have a hard time keeping your plant within that space soon. I use large poles and plant ties to pull up branches that want to spread out. Look in the picture and see some 5 year old plants and notice the size and width. Another thing to consider is raising the base. Look at the picture below and notice the bases of the plants are in a small planter (with drain holes in the low end) and on top of that they are raised on small volcano looking mounds covered with rock (in the valley I would use white river rock) to cut down on erosion of the mound. The value of this is that even heavy rains will drain out and the part above lawn level will dry out keeping the upper roots dry. This is very important if you have a clay soil. A sand soil is not so critical. The good news is that you can leave your plant there for at least one year. Within two years it gets more difficult to move and adjust plants. It took me awhile to dig out my area, get the bricks in, find a building supply that sold soil by the scoop, find a pick-up to haul the dirt. Mix the soil with sand and perlite and build the mounds. Put in the stakes and tie up the plants. It took time but I am glad I did it. Remember, Plumerias are fat medium sized trees and not the cute little plants we buy in containers. yes, I've got the27" double version. Does what it's supposed to do. lining doesn't flake off, fan doesn't make funny noises. Get's hot on the inside. does open door broiling. no service calls. Looks good. $1600. I can't imagine what a $5000 oven could possibly do better!

Should I do one double wall oven or two single wall ovens?

I grew up in a kitchen with two totally different wall ovens. One had a great broiler and rotisserie, and opened to the side. The other was fantastic for baking, especially things that needed a consistent and gentle environment. It was also good for gigantabirds. Both could handle most ordinary tasks. For instance, cookie baking marathons, or multiple chickens. Both were at optimal height. The side opening one could take advantage of what would have otherwise been a dump area by a doorway. The drop down door was by a wall where the other couldn't have fit. The design of my non-attached ovens (Gaggenau combi-steam and single) are so heavily weighted to stacking that they would have looked dumb if they hadn't been. Giving up separate optimal height ovens for that is one of the decisions I question constantly. It solved some other problems, but I still rue it. If you have the money and space for two single ovens, do it! And remember, if they're independent ovens they also don't have to be next to each other if the design works better to separate them.

Thanks for the suggestion jakvis, I will do some searching for break relay information. Being so old there is very little information out there. I've found the Fridigaire service manual from 1960 for ranges with built in ovens. And while slightly different the wiring diagram has so far matched closely, minus the range top. Just different pinout names on the thermostat. There is nothing about a double line break in the wiring diagram, but it may have had a different name back then. Or maybe 1960 was prior to double line breaks. It looks like power goes through the "cook master" which is the clock and timer control, then into the thermostat, out to "rotisserie connector" (which I am not sure if my model has that option as i dont see any connector for a rotisserie), and then into the two bake and broil elements. I'll pull it out of the wall tonight to see if there is a rear access panel for the wiring

Our sconces have 75W halogens in them (they give off the same amt. of light as a 100 watt incandescent light bulb) I do not notice any heat coming from them when I near them brushing teeth or applying make-up. I know the bulbs get hot to the touch.

The fluorescents stay cool and come in a bunch of hues, as do some LEDs and there are "daylight" ones too but they looked purplish in our bathroom. You can always put lower wattage bulbs into a fixture, but you cannot go higher than they are rated. The specs on each fixture will tell you how many watts are max. Ours have Edison sockets and we tried 5 different bulb set ups to get the right color and brightness. It ain't easy.

Our bathroom lights don't stay on for hours like the ones in our family room so heat doesn't really figure into our equation. When we replaced the 18 recessed (halogen) can lights in the family room and kitchen with LEDs, our electric bill dropped in half, and the room is noticeably cooler.

Love the scones - our London sales rep always spells sconce that way - and I think she has scones on her mind.

As Monica asked, what kind of light bulbs do the sconces currently have? If they are medium base, you could switch to a Philips LED that is now available in a warm white, which I have used successfully. If they are candelabra base, your choices will be more limited, but I have replaced G10 halogen in my kitchen with warm white LEDs, but they do not perform that well when dimmed, although they definitely are dimmable.

I don't mind a bit of extra heat in the bathroom, but in the kitchen it is intolerable. The halogen I had in the kitchen really heated up that room. I have CFLs in my bathroom (not by my choice), and I will eventually replace the entire fixture.
