ms update page

I haven't been able to do any up dates lately. When i go to the update page it doesn't matter which i click on express or custom it scans for a minute and comes back to this same page. I'm running xp, ie 6 i tried to run ie 8 and had some problems with it. One of the problems was in a pg like this where i had to type anything in, the box was always a tiny little box where i couldn't even see what was being typed. I haven't been able to do ms updates for a couple of months. Any ideas as to why this is doing it?

no it just goes right back to the beginning page to do custom or express i click on one and it just does the same thing again.

Be default, I use the Print Layout view. I tried changing the views, but the document ends up resetting the pager numbers no matter what view I use. Thank you.

If I had to move and not have my fios I just don't know what I would do. IT would be a determining factor in where I moved to I can tell you that. I will hopefully never have to leave fios! I have had it since 2005, I was one of the original test houses out here in Texas, I had the big head bosses out here from time to time, I had to call them one day because I lost my connection, I had 5 Verizon cars and trucks in my drive way in less than 15 minutes and several of them were in suits LOL. Found out one of the installers had accidentally disconnected me from the box at the street when he was working on the lines, it was very new then only about a week old. I think the poor guy got fired. That is the only time I have ever lost connection other than of course a power outage. I had DSL before that and it was a constant pain. Dial up was a bad dream.

Todays Windows Secrets Newsletter had a few mentions of some of the problems with these latest patches, as always it is a great newsletter with a lot of good info. They announced a couple of weeks ago they are extending the sale options for XP (as a downgrade) and also the support so it is looking like they are trying to get it extended till just about when the new Windows 7 Operating system comes out. Dee, Please continue to update the way you feel comfortable. The key idea is you let the site scan your system to determine need. Some users download updates directly from Microsoft without scanning. It is recommended by Microsoft to update through the Windows Update utility. Their thinking, and I do support it, is by using the utility it insures that a user only installs the needed and correct updates for their system. Further by using the utility, and I would say also the site scan, cumulative updates only download and install pertinent portions of the update not the whole update.

We have 2 problems windows up-date, and IE8 you "said" you installed it and it's having issues so lets uninstall it and start over or we will never get anywhere. Lets start at the beginning again.

# Close all programs.
# Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
# Click Add or Remove Programs.
# In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows Internet Explorer 8, and then click Remove.

This will revert back to IE6 for now. Let me know when done and if you can download windows update.

did as you said, went back to ie6 and it's still doing same thing.

have you tried turning on your auto updates and see if it will get them through the auto updater? in control panel security center automatic updates set it to automatically get and install updates.
What do you happen to have it set to currently by the way?

you said you have xp but which service pack do you have sp2 or sp3?

and you are using IE to go to windows updates right not firefox?

Have you tried microsoft updates instead of the windows update? this site explains the differences and how to use them.

have sp2, the auto update was turned off, will turn it on and see if it works that way. yes using ie to go to windows update.

I would next try using the fix it tool which will reregister your dlls which is usually the cause of it not working.
