There has been a problem with the new updater from microsoft.

The problem may have been fixed now but i have not read anywhere that it has. I would hold off updating until news is that MS has fixed the problem.

On April 17, 2008 (just last Thursday), Microsoft made an announcement that one of their recent Windows Vista updates didn't mix so well with certain USB devices. If you're a Vista user, you probably know that a Windows Defender update came through to your computer last week. That update was intended to patch a critical hole in the Defender program and while that may have worked, it did the opposite for USB devices like keyboards and mice. Yep, it caused them to stop working completely.

Unfortunately, even though Microsoft is aware of the problem, they are only "investigating the matter" and they don't have any further information about it as of yet. So, all I can really tell you right now is to hang tight. If you're having trouble with your devices, just try to be patient and wait for Microsoft to fix this. I will also continue to keep you updated on this. As soon as I hear anything, you all will be the first to know. No doubt about it!

My readings claim 80% or more of the systems are not effected.

it is possible if you can get to add remove programs in control center to look for the specific windows update number that is the culprit and delete it till there is some cure for the bad update.

After having some bad updates ruin my day a few times I now wait about a week before installing mine and I check all the tech forums to see if reports of errors or problems are happening from any of them. Usually they will send out a new and better update with in a week. lets hope that they do that this time. That would be a really bothersome problem indeed.

I use XP, the # KB944338. I just got another email from MS giving me a bunch of different fixes. Its affecting my Work computer so I'll give it a try.

Sounds complicated and time consuming. What a pain in the *ss!

Web search shows people with same problem. They have Vbscript.dll version 5.6.0.8825 and jscript.dll v5.6.0.8831 (in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32).
Downloading/installing JScript v5.7 from the Windows Downloads site was the fix as that version doesnt need the security KB# patch.

Thanks Mikie. I got this long email from some girl from MS who had me type some stuff in the run window and I think get the update out of the temp folder. It also disabled auto updating. That's as far as I got. Sent her back an email asking her what to do now, do I try to reinstall it?

At least the shield is gone and it stopped annoying me. So you think I'm supposed to download this file? Its the office machine so I'll have to do it tomorrow.

Where did you find this info that other people had the same problem?

wait on updating it they will likely come out with a fixed update, they had said they were actually stopping it from going out on any more auto updates till they had it fixed anyway.

Jane that just updates the basic JScript that came with your comouters. It would be an optional update from microsft. Microsoft doesnt update that very often and the newer version came out in august 07.

I can't find the forum right now where one of the MS MVP's was doing the initioal who-done-it - but if you search that kb# you find others that have use the updated JScript and instantly fixed the same problem.

Mikie, it came through on Auto update. I didn't go looking for anything, it appeared a security update without a KB#. I got the KB# from the MS email.

I know my 4 computers all got updates that Tues. and they all went in except the office machine which just kept trying.

Trouble is when I'm at work it is busy and I don't have time to fool around with anything. If it happened at home, I'd spend more time on it. It became an annoyance.

That is why I dont have my computer on "auto updates". I have it set so I am notified only if there are updates and then, I use the "Custom" install where I can review what updates it wants me to install and I can pick and choose
