MS Security Essentials Question

If this is installed on a Win XP machine, is the firewall both ways? Thinking of installing it for ease of use and good ratings.

MS Security Essentials does not include the firewall. In the case of XP (plus Vista and Win7) you will be asked during the install if you wish to turn on the XP firewall. Saying no and continuing on leaves your current non XP firewall activated.

The XP firewall is only one way, protecting against incoming threats.

What I last read is there is no firewall with MSE. Further, Xp is uni-directinal. That firewall should be replaced by someting bi-directional. Perhaps Zone Alarm for one.

Rita it updates whenever an update is created. My last update was 36 hours ago but as you seem concerned I did a manual check for an update and there was one there which would have installed automatically in the next few minutes. Remember, I have just woken my computer from snooze mode for a new day. You can turn the auto scan schedule off, not sure why you would want to after all the idea is to give you and automatic program leaving you one less thing to worry over. The only reason I know my scan is running is because I have a noisy hard drive, it simply runs in the background like so many other items you have installed.

Vala55, yes it is the only protection I am using. It is an anti virus and anti malware combine. That along with the Windows 7 firewall Now, this is not necessarily a recommendation for others to follow, it is just my way of seeing if the one program can/will do the job. It can and does. On my other machines I use Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, Spywareblaster and what ever anti virus I feel is the flavour of the day, currently Avast and Avira.

Thanks, Zep. Not only does the Family Tree program need NET framework "to take advantage of web enhancements offered," it needs it to actually be able to download the program! LOL I used your words "Setup Error framework 3.5 SP1" in a search engine and got better results than when I originally sought a resolution. Came across some thought-provoking ideas about this NET Framework business -- namely, it sounds like I'd have to download previous ones (2.0 and 3.0) before attempting to get 3.5. Auugh. Sounds like that would potentially lead to more issues that needed resolving. (One discussion said that the complete 3.5 framework takes 50-200 MB!) I did bookmark the excellent WindowsBBS site, as well as printed out the discussion "Unable to Install Microsoft, net framework 3.5 SP1." Honestly, at this point I need to decide if I should leave well enough, but pass on installing the Family Tree Maker program for awhile. Maybe enough other people have run into this situation and the manufacturers will come up with a comfortable solution. Thank you for taking the time to help. I do appreciate it. With the wealth of programs for internet security it is about the same as picking Ford, GM or Chrysler as a best vehicle. There are a number of long running anti virus and malware programs that stand up very well. Normally I tend to shy away from the new guy on the block. Note above that Jane_ny uses Live Onecare and seems very happy, I have used and worked on computers that use Windows Defender. This appears to be the best of both. The firewall should not be an issue, it has been used on all Vista models and there have been no big write ups about it being defective. Note too Mikie has been using this since beta and if my memory serves me he mentioned installing this back in the spring or early summer. Like Zep I installed it on my Windows 7 computer just today so I will see what it does for me.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I've been having trouble with ZA on one of my computers and decided installing MS Essentials might be easier to deal with. My research did not address the firewall. I assumed it provided a two-way firewall.

I'll have to reinstall ZA. I've used ZA on all my computers 'forever' and with the last upgrade, it has been giving me problems allowing my network. It continues to block my wireless connection. Never did that before.

I'll have to give it another try. I will not rely on Windows one-way firewall.

why not go back to the version of za that worked with your system? I use an old version of ZA have for years it is one that is light and not bloated and works great, it does the job by blocking as it should. You can find the older versions at oldversion.com

Thank you. I just assumed you needed the latest, upgraded version for all protection. I will do that. Never had a problem until I took the new upgrade. It became so troublesome, I removed all my various protection programs (as per MS Security Essentials instructions) and now am left with a one-way firewall.

I'm off to get my old ZA back and uninstall MS SE. I don't trust it anyway.
