MS Security Essentials Question

If this is installed on a Win XP machine, is the firewall both ways? Thinking of installing it for ease of use and good ratings.

MS Security Essentials does not include the firewall. In the case of XP (plus Vista and Win7) you will be asked during the install if you wish to turn on the XP firewall. Saying no and continuing on leaves your current non XP firewall activated.

The XP firewall is only one way, protecting against incoming threats.

What I last read is there is no firewall with MSE. Further, Xp is uni-directinal. That firewall should be replaced by someting bi-directional. Perhaps Zone Alarm for one.

grandmas....I will not let country of origin make my decision, but I do still believe in buying made in the USA if possible, and that's hard, but another subject. I too am a "Grandma" and not that computer savy. That is the reason for my two posts about virus scans. I was looking for other peoples ideas and experiences, since mine are so few and I feel I am not qualified to make a good decision based on my knowledge alone (which is little). I probably will go with Avast from the comments posted. I do want something that updates daily. Maybe you could tell me of your experiences with MSE since you are trying it on one of your computers and have Avast on the other. I only have one computer and it's all I need, it's a Gateway and I will have to look at the box to see where it is made. I know my old Gateway was made in America, not sure about this new one, well 1 year old. I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before the 12th, when I have to decide. I have looked at websites that compare virus scans but that can be confusing. I want real answers from real people, it makes more sense to an old Grandma like me. LOL Thanks everyone for your help, I appreciate it so much. It's nice to have a forum to ask for help.

Microsoft Security Essentials is set by default to run every Sunday at 2 a.m. Any time the computer is not on then the scan will run the next time the computer is started. The scan time can be altered to suit the user of course. As I noted above the program updates automatically too. Nothing to do except on occasion make sure the program is still running and updating, I have been very happy never had an issue with the program myself

Some computers come with a free 30 version of ms office, but I deleted mine rather then pay for it, because if I was going to buy it, I would have gotten a disc in my hand instead of "downloaded version" because I am parnoid that I will lose the number and get it deleted, and not be able to install it. But, I would not make any changes without back up disc of the OS. Is it HP? You can order them from HP if it is less then two years old. I used to have a sony lap top and it came with microsoft money, and games that took like all the memory, so I kept deleting them, but that would make the whole system not work. Things could be different now. I have deleted microsoft office and no problems yet, but I have the back up disc in case. I bought microsoft office, because it was a cheap as microsoft word alone, but it did not work for me. I returned it for a full refund and bought just microsoft word which was all I needed. I don't know if any of this information will help you, but it always better to have recovery discs before doing anything. If you don't have them, you can returnd the computer to somewhere like best buy, and have them reinstall it. But, I have heard horror stories. Even if you pay to have someone else restore it to factory specs, it may or may not work the same.

Thanks, I was afraid of that. I've been having trouble with ZA on one of my computers and decided installing MS Essentials might be easier to deal with. My research did not address the firewall. I assumed it provided a two-way firewall.

I'll have to reinstall ZA. I've used ZA on all my computers 'forever' and with the last upgrade, it has been giving me problems allowing my network. It continues to block my wireless connection. Never did that before.

I'll have to give it another try. I will not rely on Windows one-way firewall.

why not go back to the version of za that worked with your system? I use an old version of ZA have for years it is one that is light and not bloated and works great, it does the job by blocking as it should. You can find the older versions at oldversion.com

Thank you. I just assumed you needed the latest, upgraded version for all protection. I will do that. Never had a problem until I took the new upgrade. It became so troublesome, I removed all my various protection programs (as per MS Security Essentials instructions) and now am left with a one-way firewall.

I'm off to get my old ZA back and uninstall MS SE. I don't trust it anyway.
