Ok, what can you tell me about MS Security Essentials?

I tried reading up on it on the Security Essentials forum but all the posts I looked at seemed to be written by people who used English as a second language and not very well either.

Will I be able to scan single files or CD's, set the updates to Notify Me Only, scan my entire computer in less than 4 hours?

Anything I really need to know about it?

Iit's a Windows program ... it uses windows updates. What ever those settings are is how you should find it works.

Yes it will scan single files or CD's, even DVD's.

Most computers it will do a full scan in under four hours, but... there are some mighty slow computers out there with very large hard drives full of all kinds of files, pictures, videos... etc. That it might takes days to do a full scan on.

I have used MSE since it became available last year. As Mikie notes you can scan individual files, folders or drives.

The nice part is that it is a fully automatic program and free too. By default it is set to scan at 2 a.m. Sundays or the next time the computer is started.

I just bought the license for Malwarebytes for 'real-time protection'. Fifteen minutes in and already getting pop-ups.....while navigating this site. Linux used to be for geeks only. The vast majority of people don't realize how easy and efficient Linux has become. My mother who is 80 years old had her hard drive crash last year and she had many valuable photos and financial records on it that would have been hard to replace. She took her computer to the "Geek Squad" at Best Buy and tried to have them transfer all the information from her old hard drive to a new one. After keeping her computer awhile they informed her that there was nothing they could do and since she did not have a backup of anything (computers no longer ship with a backup copy of Windows) they could only replace her old drive and charge her a hundred and something dollars for a brand new copy of Windows 7 on top of labor costs and parts. To make a long story short I went down to the store and asked them why they just didn't pop a copy of Linux in since I had done that earlier and read everything on her old drive. They told me that "corporate" would not allow them to do that because of the Gnu license. I took the computer back, bought a hard drive adaptor for around 30 dollars and did it myself. The freedom one has with linux is refreshing. Spend a $150 for Microsoft Office? I use Open Office free and can do anything with it Microsoft Office does. Computer crashes and need a new one? I can buy any old computer for very little money and put Linux on it free and it will run trouble free without slowing down or crashing like a new system with Windows X inevitably will and I will not have to constantly check for viruses or trojans. The bottom line is Linux is superior to windows in many ways. I suggest anyone wanting to try it start with Linux Mint and simply run it off the CD without installing it.

just make sure you do have all your windows updates done prior to service pack 1 they did send out some that were to prepare the pc for that update, if you have all of them done and up to date then go for it.

Don't think MS Security Essentials will work on an Android Tablet Zep516 (I'm not 100% sure, only 75% sure). I could be wrong that Samsung also only makes Android tablets too! There are lots of Free Anti-Virus Programs out there for Android Devices: AVG, Norton's, Kaspersky, just to name a couple. Just go to the Play Store and type Anti-Virus for Android Devices (they do have Ratings like all other programs 4.3 - 4.8 is good). I'm using Lookout Anti-Virus on my Older Android Tablet. It's been a good AV for me for the past 4-5 years!

Wait a minute... You get your definitions updates with your regular Windows updates that only happens once or twice a month tops???

I can get one or two updates a day with AVG... I'd feel safer if I got my definitions updates as soon as possible.

Is there a way to shut off the auto scan because there's nothing I hate more than booting up the computer and have it start doing things on its own...

Rita it updates whenever an update is created. My last update was 36 hours ago but as you seem concerned I did a manual check for an update and there was one there which would have installed automatically in the next few minutes. Remember, I have just woken my computer from snooze mode for a new day. You can turn the auto scan schedule off, not sure why you would want to after all the idea is to give you and automatic program leaving you one less thing to worry over. The only reason I know my scan is running is because I have a noisy hard drive, it simply runs in the background like so many other items you have installed.

I use WSE on my Windows 7 laptop, and it warns me when I have not run a scan in a certain period of time. The updates are automatic and seem to be quite frequent.

Owbist, thanks for the reminder... But... Well, there are times when I power up the computer that I don't have time to waste waiting on it to find and install the updates... Yeah, I know, I can just turn the computer on, let it do its thing and come back later... Only problem is that I'm a caregiver... There are times when I can't get back to the computer... And, there are times when I'm not sitting at the computer when hubby will walk right up and will shut it off... Talk about an urge to bop someone up side the head... lol
