I have a mulch pile about 3 feet high next to one of my remaining large silver maples. If you dig down about 6-8 inches in the mulch you can start pulling silver maple roots out by the 5 gallon pail full. So it went with my hostas that were planted under a now deceased silver maple in less than 2 months their total root system had been invaded and was also starting to be conquered. I have heard all the stories of the beautiful gardens under the silver maple before...I only know how it went for me. And yes I broadcasted both the fertilizer and the water over the whole area not just on the hostas and perennials. Also my Maples are huge about 50+ feet tall--not immature specimens with plenty of other room to stretch their greedy roots. You will never hear me mourn for a dead silver maple...I will celebrate their demise. Plenty of other Good Trees out there... I pull weeds also even though they are alive and green. it is obviously some part of the basic setup that has the issue so any part of office you would have could have the "hole" I have not looked at the specific updates yet so I really don't know what it is patching. I've only found two small things so far that MS Office can do that OOo can't, and they are fairly specialized little tricks that most people would never miss. One is that the mail merge in Writer doesn't have a simple way to create a "catalog" listing, and the other is that the spreadsheet in Calc doesn't have the option to label the cells using the "R1C1" convention, which allows certain types of calculations to be formatted more quickly. Most people have no idea what I'm talking about, so most likely it wouldn't be missed. OOo will open and allow you to work with documents created in MS Office. You just have to remember to "save as" one of the Word, Excel or PowerPoint formats if you are going to use them under those programs again. Open Office has a different native format, but gives the option to save in several other formats that are compatible to other programs. I would strongly recommend downloading Open Office and giving it a try. The worst thing that can happen is that you end up buying MS Office down the road, but very likely you'll end up finding it to be just as useful.

Maybe something else is dependent on it and needs to be uninstalled first? Are you familiar with ccleaner? I hate to recommend any PC cleaner but if any is safe and legit, that's probably the one. The only reason I mention it is that I "think" it now offers the ability to remove even the new Windows "modern apps". They offer a free version but when I did an update, they tried to trick me into installing... Avast? I think it was. It was easy enough to "decline?" but if I'd have been in a hurry, I'd have installed something I didn't want. So I keep it backed up as a disk image. (using Macrium Reflect) I did a bit of cleanup to make the images smaller. In addition to removing stuff I wasn't interested in, I did a disk cleanup, including system files. If I remember correctly, I think there was a large folder called "Windows.old" that was created before an upgrade. I believe disk cleanup allowed me to free up a few gigs by removing that folder and a few other things. You may or may not have that folder. My memory is not good and I'm too lazy to write things down but I think I remember having that problem once when I had plenty of free disk space. I don't remember how or if I solved it.
