Open Office question--not urgent...

Just curious.

My husband has Word 2007 on his PC (WinXP) and hates it.

I'm wondering if I can install Open Office on it without having to remove Word'07, because occasionally I use his PC and I do use Word'07.

He's got tons of memory, but would the two conflict the way two antivirus will?

you can have both, I know of several people that do and have not heard of problems. the new open office version 3 is out now and is really great.
Just remember to continue to check for all security updates to your Word program even if not using it.

Hi Rina, I used the miracle gro cactus + palm soil but I don't think it drained sufficiently. I'll purchase some perlite to mix in when I repot the plant. It's only been out for a night to callus so I'm going to leave it out a bit longer. That photo makes me feel much better -- my plant has a trunk of a similar-looking size, and is about a foot tall. I've only heard of much smaller cuttings rooting so I was nervous, and I'm still probably going to cut one of the branches off to try and root it just in case the larger plant doesn't survive. Did your thicker jade make roots? And if so, did it take longer than for a smaller start? I have another question in case you have any opinion. I'm leaving my apartment in about 3 weeks to travel home for a month (I'm currently a student). I was planning to leave all my plants here and just water them very well before leaving, but now I'm not sure if I want to leave the jade. I can try taking it on the plane with me but I don't know if that would cause it more stress than it's worth. If I do that I'd leave it with my mom for the foreseeable future since she's a better green thumb than me 😅 do you have any ideas here? Thank you so much for your help so far, I was pretty panicked last night and you've been easing my fears.

Yep, agreed! Whenever DATA is that important you need to make backup/copy (keeping them current and the destroying the old backup/copy). I use to manage the computers at my last job and had trouble getting the employees to make monthly Cloned Copies of their drives. I usually had to go do it myself. I've had to rebuild numerous computers that weren't backed up, it takes hours and hours (Installing Operating Systems, Downloading & Installing Service Packs and Updates, Installing Office Packages and Updates, Installing frequently used programs for the business, etc...). With a Cloned Copy I only needed to replace the Corrupt Hard Drives with the Cloned Copy. If it was Cloned once a month or more, they would only loose that amount worth of DATA and I wouldn't have to rebuild the Hard Drive!

Cpartist good advice!! Btw- what did you think of PPFs idea about changing the elevation to extend the high ceilings and window through to the kitchen? It would allow a bit more natural light in, yes? I currently have a similar layout as far as not having a direct window in my kitchen, but having them in the adjacent dining room and living room in an open concept space.... it doesn’t ever feel dark to me now, so it never even occurred to me that it may be an issue. I don’t know what the cost will be to extend the high ceiling and windows but am going to explore it on Monday.

Ok, a little spin on this. I added my doctor's appointment to my calendar from their reminder notice. Monday, June 6th at 11:30am. So I show up and checked in with the staff member at the reception desk and took a seat. Forty-five minutes later I went back to to the staff member for a polite version of "WTH". She double checked to ensure she checked me in and then informed me that my appointment was not until 1:00pm! I said, gosh, wish you had mentioned that to me when you checked me into my 1pm appointment at 11:30. She "didn't notice". So, not sure how the 1pm appointment was added to my calendar for 11:30 but I sure wish she had let me know I was an hour and a half early to my appointment so I could have gone to lunch, shop, or whatever. Such a waste of time. Bottom line - I am never early and hate waiting. Worst of both worlds!!

Hi,

As long as the subject of Open Office came up here, may I ask: does it have anything equivalent to Outlook 2003/2007 ? I have been looking around at the site and haven't found any mention of email functionality. I'll keep looking, but if anyone already knows the answer.... :-)

Thunderbird is a popular email client that might serve as a replacement for Outlook for you. Eudora is another you might look into.

Thanks. I do use OE right now and am satisfied for the most part. (I do most of my email via the web interface.) I was just wondering if the whole email/calendar/notes, etc. functionality found in Outlook had a counterpart in the OO suite or if that's excluded for some reason.

no but bob is right on with the thunderbird suggestion, that is an excellent option for replacement of OE or Outlook, I use it on several of my computers and like it a lot. It is by mozilla the same that give us firefox. There are lots of good add-ons for thunderbird too and there is a good calendar add on for it called sunbird. You can find it at the mozilla.com site.

I can also recommend Thunderbird email program. I have used it for years now since I found it. It was so much easier to learn to use than it was to learn Outlook.
