Microsoft Office 2007: Word question

I just started using Microsoft Office 2007, and it is a bit of a challenge to adapt to it but I'm managing for the most part.

I use Word to make worksheets for my 3rd graders. Some of it involves asking a question and giving the students a line or lines on which to write their replies. I use shift and the underline to make the lines. The first part of the line goes ok, but when I extend the line for a second or third line of handwriting, a heavy black line appears from out of nowhere, and it's really difficult to remove. It's darker than the writing line being made, and it extends from margin to margin across the page.

I know I'm missing something here. Should I be using another method of drawing lines to write on? What is that black line? It makes me so frustrated!

OK--I figured it out a little. If I press "control U" then I can use the TAB to create the lines needed without the dreaded black line. So I can use this method.

But what is that black line, and how can I make it go away? It's very stubborn about wanting to be part of the worksheet. I control the White Out, however! LOL!

Don't have that program, Socks, but it also happens in earlier versions. Previous versions add that line as a divider because it assumes such a long underline is your attempt to divide one section from the one beneath, so it does it for you when you hit Enter/Return. Perhaps '07 is more sensitive and programmed to do it on earlier indicators before hitting the Enter key. The only way I ever got rid of it was to undo or select it along with the (characterless) line above and below it then delete all three lines. Hope someone with '07 has a better remedy.

Nonnie, please don't take offense but I think the problem is more with you being a novice than with Wordperfect. I say that based on a couple clues you give me in your post. One thing is WordPerfect will accept any universal graphics format. Those do not include graphics generated in program-specific formats like Print Shop or Master Prints and other such programs. Universal formats include bmp, jpg, tif, wmf, eps, pcx, png, and there are many others, but these are the most common. WordPerfect will accept all of these and most (if not all) of the others. And, of course, it accepts its own format wpg. To find out what it will accept, go to Insert Picture as if you are going to insert one. Click on the Files of Type arrow at the bottom and scroll to see what all is in there. Files of any other type will not be compatible, which means you might have to tell it to accept more if it isn't already programmed to do that. This is part of setup and is located on your WordPerfect installation disk. Concerning the article you are trying to put into your document, I don't know what that is. Is it type-written words or is it a graphic image? Is it a WordPerfect document? A Word document? A document created in some other program? Or a graphic clip that someone sent you? And how are you trying to insert it? If it is type written, is it possible to copy and paste it in? Please give a little more information? Increasing memory, as Owbist suggested, is always a good. I do know Word is the more popular word processing program used these days, but WordPerfect is also powerful and nothing snuff at LOL. I can understand the documents you receive from people are usually written in Word and having Word will make like a lot easier for you. So, to answer your question, yes you can install and run Word without having to uninstall WordPerfect. Installing Word is simple enough. The installation Wizard will walk you through it. You just follow the instructions on the screen and answer the questions it asks. You may want to instruct submissions to limit file types and size. If I were you, I'd make that only bmp formats because they don't blur or distort as readily as jpg formatted images. Also, people will send 10mg files because they don't know any better. You may want to tell them to limit file size to 1mg or 2 or 3 so you are able to manage the size and functionability of your newsletter pages(s). If you ever have to take your newsletter to a service bureau for printing, they will require jpg images only, so you will need to know that when instructing submissions.

open office does work fine, I just open the 2003 doc then copy the content, open a 2007 docx, then paste. I suggest this for anyone having this problem. It takes over an hour to install open office, I guess a lot of people need it right now.

It includes Word, Powerpoint, Excel and something else I have never used, and forget what its call, it does not include Outlook. I just ordered MS Office Home Student for $124.99 free shipping form Amazon.com. Heck, and I just, with the help of friends on the web forums, managed to set Open Office as the default application for doc. ppt. and xls. I know my wife will be happy to have MS Office back on her machine, MS has really outdone itself (money mongers that they are) in making Office available for home use at a reasonable price, keeping in mind I can install it on both my and my wife's machine, plus another home machine, for the $125 price tag.

Bestlawn! I could have asked you over on KT!

I had two lines; one I managed to delete, but I've fumbled around so much I cannot remember what I did!

Yes, I think the enter/return is what seems to trigger it. When I try to select the line, a thin vertical highlight strip appears on the left above, through, and below the line, but it will not delete. I've spent the last 20-30 minutes trying to figure it out, searching "help." But it's no big problem, I can scroll it down to the blank page and not print that page. And now that I know how to draw lines w/o triggering the other line, I'll be ok.

I suppose 2007 is ok when one gets used to it, but it sure takes up a lot of time getting to that point. It has a default of 1.5 spacing, which is not that good for me.

I got rid of it! 2007 has big tabs across the top--HOME, INSERT, PAGE LAYOUT, REFERENCES, REVIEW, etc. I had been on the HOME tab, but when I went to the REVIEW tab, then it deleted right away. Thanks again.

Don't you have that little lighting bolt above the dark line that you can right click and check Stop Automatically creating Border Lines.

If not, click the Office Button, (this would be file in old versions) at the bottom find Word Options, under Proofing/AutoCorrect Options/AutoFormat As You Type, uncheck Border Lines.

Randy, I didn't get rid of the line as I thought. It just scrolled down.

I have done as you said unchecking border lines. I practiced a bit drawing lines with shift/dash key, and the black line did not appear, so that seems like it's ok now.

No there is no lightning bolt. The line cannot be highlighted. When I rt. click on it, two little windows come up, one has choices of bold, italic, font, etc. The bigger window has cut and copy, but they are greyed out, and also paste, font, paragraph, bulets.....down to styles.

Not being able to remove the line is not a big problem now that I know that unchecking border lines has probably fixed the problem. I'll forward that tidbit on to my sister who has been having the same problem.

I think I found how to make the lighting bolt appear.
When you get to the end of the black line hit enter and it should show.
Also, did you notice the dropdown next to underline to select different thickness.

Randy, thank you for your kind efforts to help me. I just cannot get the lightning bolt to appear. The area around the black line is like a "dead zone" except for the two boxes I mentioned. I'm sure there is some simple way to get it to disappear, but I'm just not going to worry about it any more. (I know it's bugging you....sorry!)

I think this new version is outrageous! It takes too much time to learn all over.

I have it at work and have gotten to the point where I now type all important letters at home on my '03.' I take it back to work on a flash and open it there. I save it on my work machine as 03. They made a similar mess with Excel. I was trying to type a chart and it typed outside the margin on Right. I couldn't get the margin to change. Spent an hour on it and gave up. Did it at home at night on the 03 version.

I feel for you, but I've given up on dealing with that version. Whatever idiot designed it should be shot!
