Windows Media Player

I had to reformat at few months ago and when I set up again, WMPlayer automatically loaded all of the music on my computer. I have dozens of duplicates and it loads songs from every CD I put in the drive before I even decide I like the CD. Where do I turn that off so I can load what I want manually. I have more trouble understanding WMP than any software I have ever used.

That's an odd problem. what about reinstalling WMP.

My experience has been that the first time you open WMP, there is an option to not load duplicates, so it's likely too late to correct that.
To address the ripping issue, I suggest you first show the classic menu as in the screen shot:

Now click Tools and Options and go to the Rip Music tab and deselect Rip CD when inserted.

What operating system are you using? If your missing that "About" feature, seems like something is wrong, open and close windows media player, reboot the computer, see if you can get that feature back. Windows Media Player 12 comes as part of Windows 7. "In Step 4, you have choice to choose selected file type to play as default with Windows Media Player. You need to click on "Choose defaults for this program" and then select file types that you want to associate with Windows Media Player." See link below,for more on above. VLC used to hiccup at the start of every FLAC file I played. In both the Linux version and the Windows version on different machines. Several updates and it eventually got fixed but until then I used Media Player Classic. http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ Or just for audio, Foobar: http://www.foobar2000.org/ Windows Media Player pretended not to even know the FLAC codec existed so I never had use for it. VLC amazed me by playing RAR'd up DVD(VOB) movies before they even finished downloading. Public Domain movies of course. The only thing you may want to watch if you install VLC is that they may try to slip in some useless(to me) toolbar, change your search engine or whatever. Just uncheck the box unless you want it. Actually, I had forgotten MPC until I started writing this so I installed it. To its credit, it didn't try to slip anything else into the install, which I like.

Thank you both for your responses. Pam, I didn't even know what rip was regarding this software. I will look at everything a bit closer. In ITunes there is an option to load music manually and was hoping WMP had the same. I just use this software for listening to music while I am using the PC. It has taught me that I like all of my music in the library, gives me a good variety to listen to.

Zep, I have used WMP for years and never had this problem before. It must have been something in an upgrade.
