Build Update ExteriorPics

So excited to see our dream become reality! Took these pictures today as they finished the shingle. The stone is the same inside on the fireplace, but it is covered as they texture spray the walls. My daughter and I drew out the exterior material placement and chose the colors. The porch columns are douglas firs from the building site. Love them!

It looks great! You must be so excited, and it is fun to design together, my daughter helps too. :) Are you by chance in the NW? your home reminds me of 'home' and you mention the Doug Fir which there is plenty of here, we are in OR. Best of Luck with the rest of your build!

I think you need shutters on the single window that is on the wall with siding. I also think that a triangular vent in that gable would help break up the wall. Currently all of the other areas have interesting visual elements that draw the eye...stone, jack arches, pretty front stairs, front door, more brick at the foundation (right side)...this area feels almost incomplete. I think a simple triangular vent would look better than a round one. The house looks great...any interior pics?!

A building that is all one color -- body and trim -- looks like a government project. A building that is very light -- like white-- and has dark trim tends to look like a female with black make-up: goth. A building with medium body and light/white trim looks happy and content. Warm grey/taupe with white trim would be an example. Don't paint downspouts a contrasting color. They're better same color as body so camouflaged. Gutters would be part of trim color package. The corral type fencing at the balcony screams out to me as being the wrong railing. I would like to offer some graphic feedback on the landscaping. But I will not be back home (where I have tools to do it) until near the end of the month. (If you want it, bump this thread to the top after July 27. I'm not implying any discussion should halt until then.) Also, I would need different pictures. If you stood in line with the center of the building/front door, and back far enough to see the roof and grass, but not sky or street, snapping all photos from that location, I would need you to take a panning series of slightly overlapping photos that begin at far left and continue to far right. All from the same location while pivoting the camera. Include space beyond the building ends in the photos. Sadly, I must confess that while I like some of your architectural changes, I do not care for the landscaping which looks to me like the universal standard style that has been around for 100 years at least and is not based on what is good, but what was most available for others to copy.

I get wanting storage... I live in a rural area, also. It’s a 20 minute drive to our small-town grocery store, and an hour to a decent one or someplace like Costco. And we are a family of 6. The problem with a corner pantry is that you are losing 10-12” of space, just by adding walls in each side. You also need to account for clearance for a door swing. That angled wall alone takes up roughly 9sf of your kitchen. Do you feel like your kitchen has that to spare? Be honest: how often do you need to access 12 rolls of paper towels at once? Or use more than 2-3 cans of cream-of-something soup? If you’re like most people, the answer is hardly ever. Build yourself a large pantry-storage area somewhere else, and add a few full-height pantry cabinets in your new kitchen. You can store so much in those, especially if you have pullouts/drawers! You can store all of your day-to-day foodstuff there, and have backup stuff in the pantry. If it was me, I’d put the fridge at the end of the counter run, closest to the dining area. I’d slide the cooktop down toward the lower wall. And I’d turn the whole bottom wall into full-height pantry storage. I’d extend the island both directions... looks like you have a solid foot available next to the dishwasher. Once the angled pantry wall is gone, you won’t need a 4.5” aisle, so you could probably even go 18” there... a 36” aisle seems perfectly respectable since it’s not a work area. That gives you almost 9’ of island... plenty of prep space, and probably 5-6’ on the counter behind, between the fridge and range. A 12’ run of wall pantry cabinets will store probably triple what that corner pantry would. It will give you a better workflow, more countertop prep space, and look better to boot.

It began with only my husband's and my vision, rather a 'diamond in the rough' dream. Have 450' lakefront on 6+ acres. No Sandy Beach, cattails and reeds, but not a neighbor in sight! If I want to swim in the crystal clear lake, no upkeep, just pontoon out and jump in! Started with a desire to love nature, enjoy wildlife, and down the road, house my aging mother who sold us the adjoining land. All one level and handicap accessible! I'm so proud of what is soon reality and once only a vision often difficult to get others to believe in. Thank you all, through this Houzz means, to collect ideas. I will post now until April. Very Nice! I was going to ask the same question as Luckymom. Stone, Shingle and Siding are common combinations around here (in Oregon)

Thanks all! Yes, we are all Pacific NW natives- Washington though. I fell in love with this NW style and have tried to keep the lodge style inside and out. It helps to remember that "feel" when picking through the thousand choices of materials! We're going for a rustic retreat that will seem like a forever vacation when we move in!

denise54 your home is gorgeous too! Curious as to the picture you have posted. Is it a Mascord design and please don't think I am a dummy, but is that the front or back? I was looking for your front entrance and couldn't tell from that pic. Either way, I love it!! Great job!
