AO Catarina Coliseum White vs Daltile Navelli Carrara Star

For durability in a first floor half bath/laundry room on the shore, we're looking for a faux carrara marble floor tile. Has anyone had a chance to see and compare AO's Catarina Coliseum White and Daltile's Navelli Carrara Star side by side? The tile store had an AO sample and it was small.

Also, the AO site says the Catarina is a ceramic tile. Does that mean the color's not all the way through, so if it chips, it will show? If that's the case, is porcelain the better way to go?

Thanks for any thoughts and/or suggestions.

Hi Kawfee! I'm getting ready to use AO's Coliseum in a large master bath. I also looked at Daltile's Navelli. They are both beautiful.

AO's product looks a bit more like real marble to me, & it is "cooler" in color, while Daltile's is a warmer white.

I researched both online & found many images...especially the AO after install. Here's a link that shows each tile side by side. You need to scan way down the page to find this pic. Good luck with your decision! Hope this helps.

I don't plan on using it on the vanity top, I know that it has too many issues, but what type of maintenance is needed for a marble shower and marble floor (in that shower)? I'm fine with a weathered look, we are going for the look of an old house, so I can handle that (of course I know old houses didn't have two person showers but I can live with that too) For our shower we had at the last house, we tiled it ourselves with regular tiles I bought at Home Depot (ceramic probably, I dont' remember) It required very little maintenance. I'd just scrub it down with scrubbing bubbles and a scrub brush once a month or so. No mold, no mildew, no soap scum, no problems. I loved that :) I have heard that this will not be that easy just for having the glass shower door, but what added efforts will be required if we go with marble or another stone?

I am also doing a bath in the Catarina Coliseum White and ordered several of the trim pieces. We were unpleasantly surprised when the bullnose pieces we ordered ended up being the same matte finish as the large floor tiles. I spent a lot of money on them and can't use them on my shower surround with the shiny wall tiles. No information stating this info could be found by the dealer I purchased from or by myself on the internet. As for the other pieces, the mosaics are 9 tiles x 9 tiles, filling out the same space as a single 12" floor tile. They are the same matte finish as the floor tiles. We're using this in combination with the Etruscan brown to make a "rug" in the bathroom floor. The only really weird thing is that the white mosaics have a straight edge and the brown ones are beveled all the way around. I don't know why tiles in the same line would be set up differently. There is also a quarter-round piece available, though not through Lowes. It is the shiny finish of the 10x13 wall tiles. All in all, the tiles are nice for the price, but the selection of trim pieces is severely limited. We have found that some of the carrara trim pieces out there blend pretty nicely.

Here is our Catarina Coliseum white bathroom. We have the 10x13 tiles on the walls and 12x12s on the floors. The floor tiles are a matt finish and have a slighty less authenic look than the wall tiles which are in a gloss finish. We used real carrera white marble chair rails for the trim and edges. We have well water that isn't all that hard but also have a softener. No problems with keeping the tile clean. We found a great deal on the carrera marble chair rails through Belstone located in Chicago. They have a website and ship nationwide. We paid $7.50 per 12inch piece which was a bargain compared to what we found locally even with paying $150 for shipping.

Your floor looks great! I've been overly obsessing about the floor of my soon to be bathroom, ever since my husband vetoed the marble basketweave I had been planning on for lo these many months. Seeing the faux cararra looking so nice really gives me hope. I'm thinking I want a honed or matte surface if I go for the large scale tile, and found a really decent look-alike by Dal-Tile at Home Depot today. But it is ceramic, not porcelein. Should I be worried? I really have no idea of whether the ceramic would be inferior in a 12x12 tile. BTW, drewem, another poster in the home decorating forum was bemoaning the fact that the Catarina is not available. I guess you've proven that's not the case. Where did you find yours? I hope you'll post on your progress - would love to see more bathrooms of the look-alike kind!

Ha Stinky-Gardener that is my blog! I was going to come post that same picture even though it's not the best. I wish I would have had more daylight to take some better pictures.

Like the pp mentioned the AO tile is a cooler color and the Daltile is a warmer color. I preferred the AO tile because I wanted to use a cool blue color for the walls and because the veining looked more real IMO. See if you can have your tile place order in a full size AO Catarina tile or call around and find a different store with a larger sample. What you pair with the tile may be your deciding factor. That's why I included some quartz and granite samples in my picture.

We were able to place samples of each, side by side in our setting and decided on AO's Caterina for the the same reasons as the two of you. For grout, we're going with L's Silver Shadow.

Question: What spacing did you use between the tiles? I was thinking 1/8 or 1/16.
