Color variation in crema marfil

We picked crema marfil for our master bathroom tiles (floor & shower stall) because the samples we saw were very light colored, beautiful and exactly what we wanted. But when the tiles were delivered (and they are already putting them on the shower walls) they are a much darker color than we expected. The stone is still beautiful and for the shower stall we can live with it, but especially for the floor tiles we wanted something much lighter than what they delivered. One reason this is a problem is that the crema marfil they delivered is almost indistuishable from the "almond beige" we had picked out for an accent tile--we wanted a subtle accent, but not that subtle! How much variation in color is there in this stone? We expected some variation within the tiles, but not for the overall color to be so dark. Is it reasonable for us to complain or ask to exchange the tiles?

Not if it's already being set. You can make a claim on unopened boxes, but that'd be about it. Even then you're still taking a chance on having the same thing happen all over again.

Thanks Bill, I was considering returning the floor tiles (not laid yet) but since we do have extra tiles we have asked them to set aside the darkest ones and not use them. The lightest ones are still darker than the samples we saw, but acceptable. They have already put up the accent tile and while the difference is very subtle, it does show.

What irritates me is that these came from a reputable stone supplier who got very good recommendations. I feel a bit betrayed that their sales guy didn't warn us about the variation in the stone, or that what was delivered might not be nearly as light as the samples they showed us. We still have to pick out our slabs for kitchen & bathroom vanity counters, but at least there we will know exactly what we are getting.

The crema marfil will be beautiful and calming. My designer friend used all crema marfil too and I believe she did cream colored walls. For my bathroom with creamy tan porcelain tile she suggested BM Whipple Blue -- there is a fleck of that shade in the recycled glass countertop EcoCosentino Riverbed. Hi Colorado, We used bone color grout. I am not sure about the ones at HD or Lowes --- I didn't know they had Crema Marfil! I know on the travertine floor tiles, my tile guy said to watch out for the "pitting" meaning the holes on some of the tiles. If the quality isn't great, the pitting can go all the way through. I am not sure what to look for in Crema Marfil, other than they told me all of the tiles in my boxes were not the exact same thickness, so they had to pick through a bit to find more consistent ones. Lastly, I did look at several local tile shops and their crema marfil was quite a bit darker and more pink. So, from my perspective, if it looks like a good color, is pretty consistent depth and size-wise and you can get is asap, go for it and post pics when you are done! Can't wait to see it!

Personally, I'd choose the select. It is right at eye level and you will be looking at it every day. If you choose the lesser grade, there may be many pieces in the boxes that you won't want to use.

Just a word on HD. Their tile is inexpensive, often imported from China where imperfect pieces of stone are cobbled together into tile. Tile that would fail inspection at a reputable supplier is regularly sold through HD. You may not realize the horror until it is time to install it. What HD is great at is providing an inexpensive option, and taking things back. YOU MUST INSPECT EACH INDIVIDUAL TILE IN EACH BOX. My best advice to you if you go this route is to order extra boxes of tile, then sit at HD in front of the customer service desk, open each box, remove defective tiles, and replace them with acceptable tiles from other boxes. When you have enough full boxes of inspected acceptable tile, return the rest. Good luck!

Good luck on searching for slabs, I don't think you'll have much trouble finding a match for the lighter variation. I was just out looking for slabs (in the Bay Area and Sacramento area, CA) for the darker variation and most places only had the light!
