Removable hard drive for backup

O.K. I broke down and bought a WD 80GB external hard drive and started putting files on it.

I'm just wondering if I should also use it for a system backup? I know I'd need some type of software for that purpose but was wondering if that was a good idea. I have all my disks for all my programs, as well as the recovery disks HP had me make. Would it be good idea to have a system backup/recovery on the external drive or is that over kill?

You should have gotten a software disk with it. If you have one of the "My Books" the backup software is EMC Retrospect Express. Using the manufacturers back up software is usually the best, unless you have a Maxtor hard drive in the tower - the Maxtor is my favorite back up program.

Keep in mind that even though you are backing up to the external, it could go bad. If that happens you could lose everything.

roselvr, I contacted WD after posting and inquired about backup software and the My Books Essential Edition does not come with any backup software.

How do you tell which hard drive is in the tower?

I would certainly use an external hard drive for back ups. In fact I have just swapped my hard drives around to do that. But it will be for an Acronis image of each of my 3 computers, not necessarily for personal data. Although that might also be done. Besides my backup images of the other drives I keep up to date anti virus, firewalls and spyware programs on my external drive so if friends get into trouble I have those programs at hand to install if they do not have then already.

I'm not sure how you set up your backup drive, but mine only backs up files periodically according to a schedule. The schedule I chose was to backup at 3am when I'm not using it. In my experience, when the backup drive is copying files from the main hard drive, the main drive might respond a tad slower. However, being on the Internet and surfing to things like Facebook shouldn't really be affected unless you are trying to upload pictures, etc., while the backup is running, especially since it sounds like you have a newer computer with probably adequate RAM. You may coincidentally have something else going on.

There should be no problem removing a hard drive. To be safe, after opening the case, touch something metal to ground yourself in case you picked up some static electricity walking across the floor. The danger isn't that you'll get a shock from the drive but that the drive will get a shock from you. The only part that can hurt you is the inside of the power supply and the back of the tube in a monitor.

I use 'Acronis True Image'with a desktop and an external drive. The Acronis 'Secure Zone'(backup) is on the external. In fact, had some problems today and restored my entire drive in about 20 minutes. You can use Acronis 'Snap Restore' which will allow you to start using the drive while it is backing up (backs up critical system files while you're working). It's not free but the time it has saved me in restoring my PC was well worth the price. Witz You can buy it online or 'box'version at one of the major stores. Open 'My computer' right click on the hard drive and click 'properties' then click on the 'hardware' tab.
