External Hard Drive backup question - part 2

I didn't want to hijack secsteve's external hard drive thread - but I do have some questions.

immrlizard and owbist - I agree with your thoughts on total system backup - I prefer to just back up my data. BUT - my DH just asked me if I could do a full backup of his laptop in case it failed during harvest season.

He would like to have a backup on an external drive that he could go to and resume using immediatly - either on his laptop - or a different computer in the house.

During harvest he is downloading GPS data (yield, moisture, etc.) nightly from the GPS unit in the combine. This is also done during planting and spraying season.

Worst case senerio would be a failure of his computer and there would not be the time to re-install all the needed programs (plus getting all the unlock codes for the software - you have to call in to the software company for those)

He wanted to know if there was a way to replicate his hard drive onto the external drive - and immediatly start using it if needed.

We do back up the data that is input everynight, onto a USB drive.

His laptop OS is XP.

So I guess my questions are:

1. Can his computer have a backup put on an external drive that could be used immediatly?

2. What specific software would be needed.

3. Could I use the Ext. drive that I already have, and would I need to partition it?
