'High memory usage of IE' - what can I do about it?

I have received several of these popups on IE, I did add software for a small HP printer and Norton AV 2011 and I know this might be why, but what can I do to help rectify the problem?

This is an HP Netbook, Windows XP, it is 1.6GHz and 0.99GB RAM. The C drive has 74.5GB, 60.5 of which is free, 13.9 used.

Help me to tweak this little baby so it runs better. Oh, and if you could use very detailed instructions that would be best. I can find anything in the Control Panel or in Programs, but anything else I am a little lost.

well first of all that Norton is going to use a LOT of resources maybe too much for that system, you might consider removing it and using something like AVAST free or Microsoft Security Essentials and a stand alone firewall.

What is showing in your task manager as using the most of your resources? To see that do a control alt delete to bring up the task manager and under the processes running see which is showing a lot of usage.

What version of IE is installed? How many add ons are installed? Are a lot of tabs open in IE when you get the High Memory usage of IE pop up?

To find out what version of IE is installed, click Help in the browser in the window that opens click "About Internet Explore" that will tell you the version.

"Ideally Internet Explorer should not use a whole lot of memory, but under certain specific circumstances, you may encounter Internet Explorer excessive memory usage problems. MS hasn't done much about these even after accepting them as bugs. Here's an insight to these problems and their resolutions."

"IE7 has several unique excessive memory usage problems. The most common one amongst these happens to be the IE7 memory leakage problem with the growing number of tabs. It is observed that the memory used by IE7 whenever a new tab is opened, grows, but whenever the tab is closed, the used memory doesn't get freed-up. As a result, with the increase in number of tabs, the size of the memory grows bigger and bigger and after a while IE eats up excessive memory, freezes and finally crashes."

The memory usage of IE will adjust, depending on the page under process. You need to monitor the resources utilized by IE, and in case you feel that a lot of memory is being used the very moment IE is launched (ideally memory usage grows as you open more tabs, download data, or try to attach data to emails and perform other operations such as audio or video streaming), it is probably due to the fact that IE is loading with plenty of add-ons.

When you consider the memory utilized by IE under normal circumstances, IE running without add-ons eats up 10-25 times lesser memory than it does with add-ons enabled.

Hi, Sherry and everyone. Let me introduce myself since I only just became a member here (I have been a regular reader of this forum for some months and have learned much valuable information). My name is Kathy and I currently live and garden in north Houston, TX. Since Sherry asked for more Florida/Gulf Coast folks to chime in, I decided I really ought to become a member so I could post messages as well. Although you don't yet know me, I feel as if I know many of you from reading this forum. I especially value Sherry's experience, since I figure that we must have very similar climates. Therefore, I decided that I could let her know my experience with clematis here in Houston. I live in an area with many large pine, oak and elm trees. We have cut down quite a few large trees on our half acre lot (still leaving about 35 large trees), but one still gets a lot of shade from the neighbors trees. This shade is dappled shade, so there is some sunlight filtering through. I realize that many would think that you couldn't grow roses and clematis in this little sun, but I do. They would probably bloom more in more sun, but they still bloom quite a bit. I have decided that the sun seems much stronger this far south, and that seems to make a difference. I also garden organically. The first clematis I planted here (5 to 6 years ago) was 'Prince Charles'. It is on the north side of my garage, so it gets limited full sun in the summer. I didn't know when I planted it that I should plant deeply, so I didn't. It has a long bloom cycle and then will repeat again on new growth later. If I prune it after the first bloom cycle, I can get a third bloom cycle out of it. It grows on a 5-6 foot tall circular metal tower between the rose 'Ducher' and a red turk's cap. It will get some brown leaves lower down during the summer, but this doesn't seem to affect blooming. I cut it back low every February, but it doesn't yet grow as many vines as the younger ones planted more deeply. I also have 'Inspiration' (also called 'Zoin') growing next to the rose 'Kathleen' trained as a climber on a wide arch. This one is more of a semi-climber in that it doesn't have very many climbing tendrils, but uses the lower canes of 'Kathleen' for support. It is planted in a very much amended soil raised bed where it gets maybe up to 4 hours of full sun. It blooms for a really long time and doesn't seem to get any brown leaves lower down. It grows a greater number of new vines every year - I had learned by then to plant deeply. On the other side of this arch grows 'Emilia Plater'. It also puts up more new vines every year. It can cover a good bit of it's side of the arch (it is planted next to a baby 'Blossomtime') and blooms for a long time, with multiple cycles. On another smaller arch, I grow 'Rooguchi'. It probably gets no more than 2 hours of full sun daily. It dies completely to the ground every winter. It gets badly crisped leaves every summer, but blooms prolifically anyway. New last year were 'Bonanza', 'Blue Boy', 'Venosa Violacea', 'Minuet' and 'Mikelite' sharing a tower, 'Mrs. T. Lundell', 'Sputnik' and 'Pink Delight' sharing a tower. All did about as expected for first year plants (not a whole lot of flowers) except 'Blue Boy', which didn't bloom at all and grew very little. I have a row of mostly tea roses planted about 8 feet apart along the fence here. I have put these iron towers in between and a little behind these roses. This area would get no more than about 3 hours of full direct sun daily. I would second daisyincrete's book recommendation of "Trouble Free Clematis the Viticellas". I bought a nice used copy, and it is also one of my favorite clematis books. One of the nice things about this book, is that there are photos of similarly colored clematis blooms side by side. For instance, one photo groups 'Etoile Violette', 'Blue Belle' and "Polish Spirit' in the same photo. This allows you to compare bloom size, shape and color of similar varieties. Another nice feature of this book, is that every full page entry for a particular variety has four photos - a single bud, a single bloom, a closeup of the leaf and a photo showing a larger portion of a vine with many blooms (this allows you to see how the color changes from newly opened flower and fades for the older flowers). I currently have seven new plants coming for this spring. Yes, Sherry, I think it is quite easy to add this plant obsession. Plus, there is the added bonus that clematis grow vertically, take up little garden space and look lovely combined with roses. If you can't think of enough combinations on your own, many online catalogs will give you new ideas. For instance, Brushwood Nursery suggests 'Chatsworth' would be a great choice for growing through a dogwood tree. Guess who has a group of three young dogwood trees that would love a clematis companion? I'm sorry for such a lengthy post, but I hope that maybe you'll find something useful in this long ramble. lol, well some of the pizza here is good, other isn't. No coral in tank or any rocks so on. Actually driftwood. I in beginning three or more years had to add as it wouldn't go up. Then something shifted. I listen on Garden show on Sunday mornings (wor in nyc) radio, that the city was putting lime in water (he would get callers in with re to their gardens and how to do this or that with re to ph and plants) So, NYC is adding lime. I have added peat but hardly budges it. Most of fish seem fine, kh is ok, but the other off the map. Which leads me to my next question which I will post re new hatchets... Thanks. Sherry The gh was never green... way off the scale, then added and added.. same for local pet store, so system wide with re to water at least in Midtown. I know in Brooklyn they have completely different water conditions, and a woman who takes care of tanks for people, tells me that in this neighborhood, (Midtown Eastside) it is a nightmare! ieeeee!

Springlover, the thing about gardenias is that they are highly susceptible to root decay if "overwatered" ie watered too often, or if let to dry too much. This is very likely to happen in retail stores where plants are cared for by truly ignorant sales personnel. That is what I would suspect is happening to your new gardenia. Whenever you buy a new gardenia, it's possible it's already been subject to root decay. If the problem is root decay there's no amount of fussing over pH, fertilizer or anything else that will help it. Once root rot begins, the pot becomes too big for the smaller root mass and the medium stays wetter and wetter, causing more and more root -- a death cycle for the plant. For this reason, I would take it out of it's pot and check the roots. I always repot a new gardenia. This doesn't necessarily mean a bigger pot, but it does mean that I get to look over the roots and put it into a right-sized clay pot. This might be a *much smaller pot*. You want one that is maybe half an inch bigger than the roots. I personally think your worry about PH is misplaced. First things first: get it into the right environment for healthy roots. Put it in a pot just barely big enough for the roots. I use Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting mix. It is peat based and should give an adequate environment. Aphids also are very common on gardenias. The thing to remember about aphids is that they give birth to *live, pregnant* young. That means where one aphid is, there will be thousands in a few days. You have to spray every three days or so for maybe four times to get them all. I spray with one hand and use my other hand to wipe the aphids off so there won't be little ones surviving underneath the carcasses. And definitely you have to spray more than once. Take care of the roots and the plant will be okay.

I definitely agree with fairgold, agnes & Connie. The first time I even heard the word dementia was when when my Mother had to be hospitalized with a bladder infection & very high fever. I hear this is a very common way that people find out that their LO may be in the early AD stages. If it is the start of Alzheimer's I would also agree that getting her started on medications to help like Aricept, or Exelon, plus Namenda. In my mom's case they helped her to stablize and plateau for a very long time. Eventually the effectivenes decreases, but it is time well worth spent to keep them from advancing faster, than without these meds. jmho & experience I would definitely oversee her monitoring & insulin injections. You may have to take over for her if her memory is starting to be affected. Before we realized my mom was in the early stages of AD, she nearly overdosed herself on a medication that we believe she took twice because she forgot that she had already taken it. By the time my Dad got her to the ER, she was only minutes from having to have a traceotomy (sp?) because her throat & tongue swelled up. Best of Luck! Blessings ~~ katclaws

Raven, about 60 programs are running in my task manager. I know I had a site bookmarked on my old computer that told you what was and wasn't necessary, I will look it up on Google unless you know of one that is really good too.

Zep, I have IE8. I did have several tabs open when I saw the pop-up this time, I don't recall in the past if I had many open but that is a good point. I have closed everything but this one and haven't had a popup since I posted a few hours ago. Thanks for the articles, I will check them out.

All in all the computer is running fine, I got it at a Verizon outlet for $1 about a year ago and want to keep it running the best it can.

I have an HP netbook which came with about the same specs, so I'm sure that it's the same machine or close to it. I was having problems with certain things running a little slow in my browser, like videos, so I decided to add more RAM. You have 1GB of RAM and you can likely replace this with a 2 GB chip for about $35. For me it made a noticeable difference, and it only takes a couple of minutes to install. Go to www.crucial.com to see what your computer can handle.

The No Add-ons mode allows IE 8 and IE 9 to temporarily run without any add-ons like toolbars, ActiveX controls, etc.

The No-addons mode in Internet Explorer is rather useful when you want to trouble shoot incompatible browser add-ons or extensions, or the issue you're having.

It is also very useful when you want to troubleshoot a problem like say freezing of your IE, to identify whether it is related to any add-on.

To run your IE in the no add-ons mode:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

Alternatively, you can simply sun the command line arguement;

iexplore.exe -extoff

This will start IE with no add-ons.

Then through Internet Options > Manage Add-ons, you can enable/disable each add-on to identify which, if any, add-on is creating problems.

If you continue to have the Memory pop up error, run IE 8 in no add ons mode to see if that temporily fixes it. all explained above.

You need to determine why IE is using to much memory first, adding more ram is a good idea, but it's not going to fix Internet Explorer issue, the error clearly shows that IE is having some memory issue, no matter how much ram you add IE will still be using to much for what ever reason, we end up masking the problem that way.

Kudzu, I will get more RAM, didn't think of that!

Zep, IE is now running with no add-ons.

Thanks for the help, I will post back if the pop-ups come back!

Remember running IE with no add ons is just a trouble shooting exercise not a solution. I'd let IE run that way for a while all day or longer to see if it generates the error again, if it runs ok with no Memory Error, Then activate each add on 1 at a time to try and find out what add on it is that maybe causing the problem.

I swear I need to get my glasses updated or my brain LOL
All my brain saw was high memory usage, oh well with Norton on there it is still valid info LOL just has nothing to do with IE.
