Iron balusters - good online source?

I would really like to have some simple iron balusters, the twists, or possibly twists and baskets. What our local lumberyard seems to have doesn't look as good as some I have seen and are pretty high. Have any of you gotten them online, and were you pleased with the process?

I actually saw some in Home Depot or Lowes last week (can't remember which), though I didn't go take a good look

Where are you located - If by any chance you are in NY State (Lower counties) , I can recommend a guy who makes this by hand and has a natural gift at this stuff - btw i am hard to Please .. :-) !

He is also very reasonably priced

I too am in search of a source for this plant. It boggles the mind that it is no where to be found in our retail nursery catalogs and garden centers. I grew up in Illinois where my mom had it growing in her little "woods" garden. We were poor, so all her plants came from neighbors and friends as trades or pass-alongs. It also boggles the mind that the creepy crawly variety is so available and this neat, tidy and well behaved ranunculus acris 'flore pleno' goes virtually unknown to many and as elusive as hen's teeth. I have started contacting every mail order nursery I can think of and am pestering for it. Maybe if all of us who are interested in bringing this precious plant back to our cottage gardens contact our garden centers and plant sources we will eventually be heard. The squeaky wheel just may get the buttercups.

Annoyingly it is difficult to get MSDSs or sometimes even the guaranteed analysis on JR Peter's products. You have to call them and ask them to email them to you. Here's the STEM from a post from Al awhile back: GUARANTEED ANALYSIS Sulfur (S) (Combined) .............................................................................................. 13.00% Boron (B) .................................................................................................................... 1.35% Copper (Cu) (Soluble) ................................................................................................ 2.30% Iron (Fe) ...................................................................................................................... 7.50% Manganese (Mn) (Total) ............................................................................................. 8.00% 8.00% water soluble manganese (Mn) Molybdenum (Mo)...................................................................................................... 0.04% Zinc (Zn) (Soluble) ..................................................................................................... 4.50% Derived from: boric acid, copper sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, ammonium molybdate, zinc sulfate. I don't believe that this is the ideal ratio of these micros according to Al's posts in other places but there you have it. He says he used to use the product so it can't be too far off. Also note there's no Ca or Mg in there. When I made my homemade foliage pro I bought the micronutrients from JR Peter's Lab: They have both products. Online curtain sources?

I've actually met with a lot of success using glue and such for curtains, esp when I don't want the stitching to show...its very strong...ive used it to attach braids to valances and such. When i was making the veil, i tested some glued on crystals and was amazed at their holding power. But the dry cleaners or a tailor is a good alternative. I've often wondered if you can rent a sewing machine...say like where they sell them or hold classes and pay by the hour or some such thing to use them...though I suppose buying a used machine can be cheaper. Or you can bug a friend who has a machine...

Larger shapes are often made hollow to save on material and shipping costs. There should be no way to tell one they are installed.

Thanks doogan, but we are in Iowa, but will take a look at Home Depot, Lowes. I am looking at kingmetals right now, and wow they have a large assortment! Thanks punamytsike!

I am buying mine from www.stairpartsusa.com. Their prices are really good. I don't have any first-hand experience with them, though. Good luck!

I have ordered from them and know that many local professionals order their materials from them as well. They also have some stuff on sale. Not sure if that is on their web, but if you have time, call them up and ask them to send you Flyer # 56.

First-hand experience! We ordered our iron balusters from a place called westfiremfg.com and could not be happier! We ordered a new hollow iron baluster which weighs ALOT less than solid and made shipping fee lower, not to mention the guys doing the labor said they were much easier to cut and handle. We had a budget of $1400.00 (material) for our balusters and we only spent $344.00, which included the freight of $47.50. Their customer service was great (we dealt with Joe) and they answered all of our questions and even helped us in the layout/design. Our builder was VERY pleased with this bargain I hunted down! Their wevsite was a tad tricky to navigate to certain areas, but other than that...PERFECT! Good Luck!
