Leaves dropping

I have a trumpet plant that has never been outdoors. I had to fight mites on it one time and I cut it all the way back. It has new growth and suddenly holes started to appear in the middle of the leaves. Some leaves that look absolutely healthy have started to fall off. i don't know whether i should cut it all back again and use new soil.

Wrong forum, but anyway,

Ok so you have random hole's showing up in your leaves. If they are in the being punched out and not eaten from the edges in then its most likely slugs It's not Aphids because you would always see them on the plant. If you rarely see any insects on the plant but more hole's popping up it's slugs. They are nocturnal insects that crawl up the stalk of your plant and on the leaves and back down into the soil before morning. Iron phosphate sprinkled around the plant on the soil usually removes them. Or Ortho's Bug Geta. You can also try leaving a coffee saucer out over the night with beer in it. The slugs are attracted to it and will crawl in and drown. In the greatest death possible in my opinion :). Other then that rapping pure copper around the base of the plant will kill them because when they crawl over it they will shrivel up and die. Good luck

If it's Datura that you have, I did some reading and you might check your plant for beetles, too...it seems flea beetles and adult tortoise beetles will chew small holes in Datura and its relatives. I included a link to some photos to see if the holes look like the ones in your plant. HTH.

Are you on a hill or slope? Is the drainage good? Have you had some heat waves? One thing comment I was given recently at a native plant nursery is the problem generally can be watering when it is too warm, rather than just watering per se. Heat + water creates the problem--bacterial/soil pathogen rather than just water, because soil pathogens are generally much more active in warm soil than in cold. Food for thought--I do not know if this applies in your case. Every Ceanothus I've lost has been due to not enough water, rather than too much, but I have light soil, not clay, and slopes.

So frustrating. My first meiwa actually did the same thing- a rapid onset of leaf drop. Did not recover. The top branches on this current one have now turned black overnight, so they are gone. I'm down to one branch and a smaller one that has insect damage. I've had meiwa from 3 different growers, and have had issues with all of them. Of course, being fairly new to citrus, my lack of experience may also factor in. I have another meiwa that suffered significant root disturbance (critter) last spring. Pleased to note that the plant is currently carrying many fruits, hoping they make it to harvest. The resilience of the plant is encouraging.

Compare to 'Henna' Coleus, specifically. The PH of the unsealed plaster could be contributing to this plants' unhappiness. Coleus like moist soil, high temps & at least some direct sun. The farther north one goes, the weaker the rays become, so an hour of Alaska winter sun is probably similar to 15 mins of winter exposure in FL. Anyone who needs to bring Coleus inside to protect from cold will see the best results by putting them in their most sunny available spots, as long as those spots don't get cold enough for frost. If you are nervous, trim a stem or two and stick it in a jar of water. Put in sunny windowsill & make sure it doesn't go dry. That's the primary way I've been saving Coleus for decades, in OH at first, and now in AL. I like to have at least 50 in my yard over summer.
