Changing router to laptop

I currently have a wireless Netgear WNR834Bv2 router hooked up to my desktop pc and a laptop. I first installed router on the desktop. My daughter's pc died and I'm giving her my desktop. What do I need to do to install the router just onto laptop? Or do I need to do anything? Do I need to restore the router to the factory settings? My DH is ripping out paneling in my pc room tm and drywalling, so I need to get it done tonight. Mlou

I don't think that you will have to make any changes to the router because it will be no different to using your laptop (as you probably do now) without having the desktop computer switched on.

Unplug the desktop from the router then see if the laptop still works. If it doesn't, then plug the cable back in and let us know.

The only problem that I can think of is if your printer is plugged straight in to your desktop computer. If it is then you may have to install the printer software on your laptop.

I used the recovery disk on the desktop last night and sent it home with my daughter. Held my breathe, turned on my laptop and thank goodness it works fine!

Most routers today have a setup utility to make it easier to get the router up and running. From what you describe, it sounds like you did all the right things. To access the router itself you use your internet browser and type in the routers IP address. An IP address is nothing more than a series of numbers that identify the location of a device on a network. It's something like 192.168.0.1 but it needs to be exactly right or your computer won't be able to find the router. Check the documentation that came with the router. From there you'll get a log-on screen. Depending on the brand the user name will be blank or something like admin or administrator. The default password is typically "password" or the brand of router. Again check the router's documentation. From there you'll find more settings that you can possibly use. :-)

I definitely would not get the celeron processor. Go for a better rated processor. I am an AMD fan prefer them over Intel but everyone has their own preferences. on the router make sure you change the default user name and password to the router itself and give your wireless network a very strong number/letter mix passphrase or use one generated by the router if it will do that (write it on a card and tape it to the bottom of the router not blocking any vents). Be sure also that you have enabled WPA2 encryption in the router setup so that your wireless is safe from those passing by or near you that could other wise jump onto your network. My router is a linksys G router and I have a 4000sqft house, I can use my laptops anywhere and get an excellent rated signal, I can go out in my yard and get the same, my neighbor can see my network from his house and he shows it as a strong signal, of course mine is locked down so he can not get on it as is his, I see his from my house which has 2 bars.

You need to hook up your router to a port/port & look in your belkin configurations for a Repeater setting/page, or Extender settings or page or WDS settings. I'm not sure exactly what Belkin might call it. To see if it will repeat your neighbors signal. Then set it maybe by your window or closer to neighbor. = no wires required. Not all versions of that model belkin do the repeater function. But some do. Seems some are wired access points, some are wireless WDS access points/repeaters/extenders. Mixed bag of tricks depending on version and firmware too. Most can be used a wired access point, that way - maybe you neighbor could run a network cable to his window or somehow closer to you & use your belkin in AP mode. Then he would have extended network too! Reading at belkin.... What is WDS (Wireless Distribution System)?....etc... Supported Products - F5D7630-4. F5D7230-4 v1 v2, v4, v6, v8, v9.

Is the wireless signal protected by a password (WEP or WPA)? Or is the administration of the router protected? Those are different things. If you're not using security for the wireless signal, somebody could be piggybacking on your connection. If you didn't change the SSID, they could be connecting by accident. I remember a few years ago, one of my brothers called me because he was helping a friend connect. He told me that when he viewed wireless connections he saw 4 that said Linksys and wanted to know which one was the right one. I had him change it in the router and also set up security (I think at the time, WEP was the only option, but WPA is better and should be available on all systems now).

Mlou, Thanks for letting us know, but there is something that I should have mentioned earlier but forgot to include!

All your personal data might still be on the desktop depending on what you actually did with the recovery disk. In your instance it won't matter too much because your daughter can wipe off anything that is confidential.

Also, what about your address book and emails? Had you already copied (or forwarded) the important ones across to your laptop?

Colin, I did download everything I thought I would need, even my Favorites. I also told Jenny that if it ever crashed to give it back to me so I destroy the hard drive or whatever it is that keeps my stuff lurking around. She came over last night and took the pc home. Just waiting for the telephone people to hook her up. Our granddaughter can't wait to back on MySpace.

I'd be more concerned about the granddaughter on my space then anything. hard call cause all the kids are on it, there is some real crap on the site. 18 or older...

yes not to mention the high risk of infection, make sure she has malwarebytes on that pc and does full scans very regularly if they are visiting social networking sites.

I think she mainly sticks with friends she already has but it is a worry. Also what do you mean by malwarebytes and how do you prevent it? I did tell Jenny they need to do a scan after every use when the GD's been on myspace or checking out diff sites. thanks, Mlou

Malwarebytes is an anti-malware program that can scan for bad stuff and remove it. I would second Raven's suggestion about putting it on the computer. Update and run scans regularly.
