tub surround question - mongo/other experts??

Hi,

We intend to have a marble tub deck. The plumber wants the plywood cut away in the area where the fixtures are to be installed. He said the rough in valves are supposed to be attached directly to the marble. He said that the reason he gets calls backs for loose spouts is because the plywood contracts and shouldn't be there in the first place. He wants a rectangular area about 22" x 6" removed from the side of the tub deck. All the tub fixtures (faucets/spout/diverter/handshower) will be in this rectangle. I am concerned that the fixtures will crack the marble if there is no plywood to support them. Should I be? Is the plywood cutaway standard practice as the plumber insists? Thanks for your input!
