Pharaoh, did you finish your wood paneled shower?

Sorry if I missed a post regarding this, I did a search and didn't find anything. Anyway, you once contributed to a thread saying that you had a wood paneled shower going in and that you would post pics. I'd love to know how it's going, as I'm still planning to somehow do wood in my shower. Thanks! Amy

The wood panels are in! but the bathroom is far from finished. I will post in a couple of days as soon as the panels have the final finish on them. The ends of the shower are wood panels, and the third side is white sivec marble and so is the bathroom floor.

I have already put 4 coats of waterlox. The last coat will be a waterlox marine varnish.

I did our basement floor with Delta-FL (like dricore but all plastic) as a "subfloor" and Allure linoleum floating floor from HD. It meets requirements (cheap tough dry play room) but it is not a proper installation. The delta product wants a sub floor if the laminate is not used. Because the floor does not have a proper subfloor it is really soft - which is great for 4 young kids banging their heads, but not for heavy furnature feet. We have had problems with water in the basement. I have made some changes outside (grading and downspouts) that I hope fixes the problem. However, I still plan to have water down there at somepoint. The Delta keeps the floor off the concrete and a sump pump makes sure it gets rid of any water that might accumilate. If the pump fails or some other problem and the basement floods, the linoleum is water proof. Delta is $0.51/sq ft and the Allure was $1.67/sq ft.

Thanks everyone for your answers and ideas, and especially to those who are being so supportive with the encouraging words. I just got off the phone with my son. Let me see if I can answer some of your questions. I did tell him -- and I'm sure he knows -- that I've certainly made paint booboos before, and that everyone has. No biggie. I asked him a lot of questions. He owns the house. We are in the greater Seattle area, so 9 mos. of the year it's grey and rainy. He says when he saw the gold he just kept thinking of the green and that he LOVES that green and loved how good the "fake wood" hall doors look with it. He's not happy with the blue paint, and wasn't as soon as it was done. He keeps saying he can't afford to replace the ugly blue tile right now, and I know he doesn't want to do the work. Decorpas & Funkyart, I've read you can paint tiles, but that it's a bad idea in an area that sees a lot of water and use. I looked into that too. He says he knows the kitchen is going to look bad until the tiles are gone. Funkyart, have the tiles worn well for your friend who did it? Can you please find out more? Like products? Sealer? Did she paint her grout too? I think either black or some shade of tan/brown would look good on the counters. I ran the dishwasher panel by him but he says his is so old he's not putting a dime into it. He owns the brown loveseat, bought it himself a few years ago. He owns the chair -- it's a hand-me-down antique from his dad's side of the family. It's theadbare and then some -- a pale aqua color. But he won't part with it (sentimental). The red color on the chair (which he wants) and the pillows and the draperies were my addition with the mockup; they aren't there IRL. The little rocker to the right of that one pic was left behind by a renter and he thinks she's going to come get it one of these days. The lace curtains were left by the PO. I've asked him about them and he says he likes them and wants to keep them. Go figure. He likes antiques. He dislikes modern decor. Funny, he's always been a Navajo White kind of guy in the past, so this burst of color really surprised me. I think he surprised himself, too. His LR/DR and Kitch all flow together. Like, you come up stairs from the front door (split entry) and the LR is on your right, the hallway on your left, with the kitch straight ahead. The LR opens to the DR, and the DR opens to the kitch. The wall you see painted green is the wall that separates the kitch from the LR. What you see painted blue in the above first pic is the kitch's shared wall with the DR. So at this point he says he wants to keep the gold in the LR and the half of the DR as it is (LR and DR share a common wall). He really likes my mockup and still wants to do that, and wants the green down the hallway as he has it now, and intends to paint that green in the kitchen as well. He still wants to accent with red... leaning toward the rust tone, not toward burgandy. So do you have any comments, ideas as to how to pull that off without making it look like a Christmas explosion? That green really threw me for a loop.

From the attached link: Raised Panel - Solid Even though the panel is called solid, it is not usually made of a single piece of wood. Wood expands and contracts with changes in humidity, and this can cause the door to split and crack. To counteract the problems of natural movement in a solid wood center panel, the panel is usually constructed using several pieces of solid stock lumber glued together. The wood strips used to construct the panel may not all match in graining and color. As in the case of the slab door, the door's strength comes from the manner in which the pieces of solid wood are reversed as they are glued. The panel is then cut on all four sides, so the center is higher than the edges. The face of the panel is usually flush with the front surface of the stiles and rails, with the edges forming a tongue which fits a corresponding groove cut into the door frame. The groove is slightly larger than the panel's edge to allow the panel to float in the frame. This simply means that the panel has room to expand and contract during humidity changes, reducing the risk of the panel cracking or splitting. I gather from the Woodmode site that this is how they construct raised panel doors as they describe their raised panel doors as being constructed from solid wood. How big an issue the movement of the centre panel in a flat panel door will be probably depends on geography (I have seen some dramatic examples here that am sure would not be acceptable to many folks while I tend to think the hairline cracking I have seen is part of the charm and patina of age of painted cabinetry. In terms of Woodmode they do kiln dry all their wood which may in part explain why they have not have felt they would get better performance from an MDF centre panel that some companies are opting for. I also think it is a market issue a lot of Consumer's in the US have a real aversion to composite wood products regardless of the possible benefits (this does not really carry over to Europe or Canada). Cabico and many other Quebec companies offer 100% MDF doors for paint finishes (same opaque finishes are usually available on maple at Cabico). Lots of their MDF door styles are raised panel. On the ceiling, what kind of plywood did you use? usually luan is cheapest good looking plywood in HD, so that's what I have used mostly. Did you paint the designs with a brush or stencil them? stained designs are painted with a very small brush. How did you keep the stain from bleeding out to surrounding areas? Fist I make a stencil and trace the design with pencil and then fill in with stain, making sure that I have very little stain on the brush. What brand of stain did you use? I have always used Minwax --------------------------------------- wondering what to do with them. I would love to do this! Have you written up any instructions for how you did it? Or could you tell us please? What product(s) did you use? Decosup How did you transfer your design to the concrete? I drew the design on the floor with pencil based on smaller scale design on the paper Did you mask off areas? it was not necessary, as My husband cut the lines around the design before I stained and that prevented most of the bleeding issues. How did you apply the product? with the cheap foam brushes from HD What do's and don't's did you learn along the way? Don't too it on a hot day, the stain dries too quickly and you will not get as deep color. Thanks very much for any help you can give me! Where did you learn to do all this? Trial and error ;) Do you do this type of work for your job? Not yet at least, I have thought about doing it professionally but I am really lousy sales person, so this might for ever be just my obsession and hobby :) PS. Here is a sneak peak at the new bathroom remodel (still not done). But the panels are in:
Details:

Bubinga aka African Rosewood (from Cameroon) , 1" thick bookmatched panels. Here is a little of my eccentric side, I bought a big lot of this wood all of which came from single tree! so it is getting exciting doing wood projects with matched wood!

Finish - 4 or 5 coats of Marine waterlox.

Marble - Sivec white which is from Macedonia. 18"x18" tiles set on kerdi.

Thats all for now.
The bathroom should be ready in about a month :(

I have used plastic vapor barrier behind the wood panel. The panels are installed to the studs directly using screws. I have countersunk the screws, then i will fill the holes with bubinga plugs, then sand a oil again so that you dont see them.

One of the panels now has the shower panel installed on it.

I am working on completing the floating vanity also built out of solid bubinga. It takes a while to get 5 coats of oil not to mention the strong smell of solvent, i try to work in the garage with a powerful fan. The problem has been bugs that stick to the wet oil and sadly get entrapped :(

Nice! Real purdy!

I'm working with some 8/4 honduras mahogany this week. Doesn't matter how many times I do it, I still feel trepidation when standing in front of the table saw while getting ready to feed a $360 chunk of wood through the saw.

Those are nice wide planks you have there, the bookmatching is a very nice detail.

Pharoah, I hope you took measures to account for wood movement.
a 32" wide plank of bubinga will vary up to 1.2" in width between 20% moisture and 6% moisture. Bubinga is one of the more active imported hardwoods in this respect.

Great pix. My wife and I are working our thoughts on a wood shower...slats we are thinking...on two of the walls...tile on the two that face the corner of the room. We are thinking of maybe glass between posts where the slats go...to reduce maintenance. We live on a sailboat and I regularly clean the teak shower floor slats.

We would love to see any picutres of other's installation.

pharaoh... your kitchen is one of my all time favorites. Just absolutely every detail is wonderful.

The same goes for your bath. Amazing! can you please tell me about your wall tile? I'm redoing a smaller bath and bought an Italian cherry floating vanity with marble top off craigslist. I'm trying to consider flooring/wall tile options and I loved the look in yours.

You should be SO proud!!

The bathroom wall tile is glass 4"x12" laid vertically in a simple grid with 1/16" white grout.
The floor and shower is sivec white marble.

I am pleased myself, however with all the polished finishes, i have to spend more time keeping it all looking blingy ;)
