Bookmarks and Scrapbook are different. I can back up Bookmarks easily following the path I gave in my first post. There is a file for Bookmarks inside the next stop after Profiles, which is v20fqq3t.default. I forgot to mention that last one. There is also a folder for Scrapbook inside v20fqq3t.default, but that folder contains a number of files, including "Backup" and several RDF files that appear to be individual backups but are just a meaningless list of figures when I click them, as well as a folder for "Data." "Backup" itself is also full of lines like the following: RDF:Description RDF:about="urn:scrapbook:item20060912103442" NS8:id="20060912103442" NS8:type="" NS8:title="Scappy String Quilt Instructions" NS8:chars="UTF-8" NS8:comment="" NS8:icon="" NS8:source="http://home.pmt.org/~awalter/string.html"/ So I don't see how saving Backup would give me something to use in the event of a crash. Groan. Come to think of it, Roxio appears to insist on individual files rather than folders when I want to burn a disk, so maybe I'll have to export everything to the desktop and then laboriously transfer it to Roxio as a "project" and burn that. What gets me is that previously--maybe a long time ago--there was just one folder that I could transfer to a zip disk and from it open up FF again with all the scrapbook entries. Somewhere along the line that changed. I do find Scrapbook very useful because any Web page saved there is always there, along with its clickable links, even if the original page has been taken down.

How good that is, what with our rudimentary level of knowledge, computer-wise (well, somewhat reduced "wise", maybe) may be a matter worthy of some question. Thanks for the info. I had a call purportedly from a windows guy the other day, saying there was something wrong with my computer ... I asked him how he knew, without entering my computer uninvited, and he said they'd noticed there was something wrong ... ... was I at my computer? ... ... he could help me fix it. I told him that I was not at the computer ... ... and that my computer is not attached to the internet, whether by line, tower or satellite. That pretty well ended our conversation. Gonna have to change that, though, I think. ole joyful

Hi, I agree with the other two posters in that turning off the main breaker will probablly intiate a fail over sequence and test the generator. I was just wondering how your in-laws knew that the generator system did not kick in? Usually people know that there was a power failure because all their clocks are blinking, typicaly the one in the kitchen oven and microwaves. A 5 second or more power backout will reset all the clocks. Note most generator systems will only kick in after a 5 second or more power outage. This stops them powering up if it is just a momentary blackout. Once the generator decides that it is worth powering up. It usually takes 20-60 seconds for the power to come online. During this time of course all your clocks have been reset. The other thing worth noting is that often high power consumption items, such as electric ovens are usually not on a power backup circuit. This is to avoid overloading the generator. However with $US 60,000 I would sort of expect that that everything would be on the backup circuit. Just my 2 cents. warmest regards, Mike.

I was here pk. I guess I should have let you know that the backup was specifically asking for the apple id password. I only brought up email because I found no contacts (but I also pointed out that I hadn't tried to link emails in any way). I also now see that there is an off setting on a 'settings' button for email. I am not sure how she sees her mail. Probably directly via Safari but I do see an email app right on her first page trey below the regular apps. Probably way more info than needed since this was not really an email question. Looking back, I now see that I wasn't clear about what password was wanted; sorry. My general question was about the whole purpose of this kind of backup. It appeared (and still does) that she may not have had anything to backup because she didn't really use itunes for paid music (and yesterday I saw something that implied it didn't do that either, I suppose because apple really only has pointers to the music and always remembers your apple id with those pointers). I was more concerned that perhaps each system update might wipe all apps and perhaps other stuff. As far as I can tell, it certainly didn't wipe all apps out (she still has some), and I see no reason it would clear specific ones. I was waiting for another response and to see if I got a backup. I can't really tell because it doesn't say so. It was not asking to be backed up yesterday (or today) and I can't find where it is indicated. The new update changed stuff on icloud and wanted new legal acceptance (i gave it) but that was after I attempted the backup. BTW I actually read a little of the legal stuff and it included that icloud could wipe your backup if you didn't backup for 120 days!!! Anyway, I still don't really understand the purpose of this backup system. While attempting to follow various directions, I got messages that suggest if there are problems (I don't think there actually were) that I should Reset the ipad. I am suspecting that perhaps that is exactly when the backup would be needed because the Reset Would wipe everything back to a new pad. Not sure of that either.
