My system is 64-bit as stated in my OP. I went to the link that exgm post and this was on the site: If you are using: * 32-bit Internet Explorer (IE), you need to download 32-bit Java (Verify browser) * 64-bit IE, you need to download 64-bit Java (Verify browser) Verify if you are using 32-bit or 64-bit IE browser. Follow these steps to verify whether you are using 32-bit or 64-bit browser. Launch Internet Explorer browser. Click on the Help tab at the top. Select About Internet Explorer which will bring up an information window. If version of IE displays 64-bit Edition, then it is 64-bit IE, otherwise it is 32-bit browser. The older Update for Java states that it is for 64-bit but the update 17 doesn't. I will just remove the Update 14. Thanks everyone... Jean

Look in your uninstall programs for Oracle Java or used to be named Sun Java. Or look in your program files off the start menu for them too & should see an uninstaller there. Just uninstall java and forget about it unless you need it .... Thanks, everyone. Those warnings make me nervous... To answer zep's questions - yes, it is Vista; and yes, it is Internet Explorer. OK, so I think it is the firewall, then. So I will allow it; and I will tell it not to ask me again. I didn't allow it at first, so then I allowed it the second time (waited for my computer to blow up... ; ) ... but it didn't happen); but I didn't check on not to show again because I was afraid that if allowing it was not the thing to do, I wouldn't be able to see that pop-up again. If that makes sense. If I have any problems with version 7, I'll let you guys know. I did notice that when I was downloading it, it took awhile to download some patches along with it.
