Use of basketweave marble tile in main bathroom

So, my husband and I are gutting our bathroom. More specifically we're hiring someone to gut the bathroom.

We thought we'd settled on basketweave marble mosaic for the bathroom but now we have some durability issues.

I spoke to a sales person at Walker Zanger (note: they are having a sale on the Tribecca basketweave tile, 15/SF down from 30ish) and he advised me that using it in my bathroom would be OK so long as I was willing to clean and seal, but not to use it in the shower. That sounds fair, but can someone suggest a tile for the floor of the shower? This wouldn't be an issue of we kept the tub/shower combo but we're taking that out and leaving a shower only (I know, I know, there is an other bathtub in the house, my husband and I are shower people any children can be washed in the sink, when they're too big for that to the shower they go).

Also, the house is a rather old victorian, the bathroom was last updated in the 1940s, so we're trying to keep the flavor of the house intact.

We have basketweave on the shower floor only - the rest of the bath is bigger (12 inch square) marble tiles. So far (2 years) no problems. Our contractor preferred basketweave on the sloped shower floor and nobody in the many tile stores I visited advised against using it in the shower, either. Now I would like to know, too, why that was not a good choice.

I have the same problem as OP - will be using marble mosaic on the bathroom floor, but hesitant to use it on the shower floor...the Tile Shop says its fine, fwiw.

Wow, that is stunning! I love the shine on the tile, it glows like polished marble or stone. Very, very pretty. I noticed you have a magnifying mirror that extends out from the wall. I want one of those but always wonder about how to place it for the best use. Where does the light come from in this room, is it a ceiling fixture? Rachel, I got the accent pieces from a local stone warehouse, and the carrara pencil liner on top from a different internet source. (TilePost I'm thinking? On sale for $6.99 per foot). Found it, here is the link. It is still on sale. http://tilepost.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=26&zenid=t405qf0cgqefervb87etj1gn10 I was a little concerned about bringing the carrara together from 3 different sources but there is enough variety in the carrara that it all works. The accent pieces were on 1' square sheets and I just cut it into strips for the accent band. The challenge was that these pieces are a bit thicker than the subway field tile, so the tile setter had to butter the adjacent edges a little thicker to make them all flush. My floor is honed. The carrara on the wall is also honed, but the black marble dot is polished. Good luck! Anita

thanks Bill! If, however, our goal is to avoid problems (mold, mildew, water damage) 10 - 15 yrs down the line, should we change out the tub surround (yes, I'm going to presume you'll say) AND the floor? Or, can we seal the grout and call it a day on the floor? Many many years ago, I remember seeing a mushroom grow up between the wall and the floor, in a bathroom, of a place that I was living in. Guess that there was a wee bit of water leaking out of the shower!

It is difficult to perceive true colors on a computer monitor - so you ill need to make the final choice. Here are some basket weave floors. There a several companies that make it and in some different color tone variations, so be sure that the wall tile and floor are working well together. You might want to get a sample of the SW Sea Salt and paint a large piece of foam board to set your samples on and look at it in different lighting. The Sea Salt can change colors in different lighting. I think you are thinking of the white ice up the walls, like a wainscot: I have mosaic tile floors, though not the basket weave as it wasn't out when I did mine, and white subway tile walls in two of my bathrooms and plan to do the same in my master someday. They remain more timeless looking than my master, done in early 2000's. I did a decorative trim in one bathroom, and a simple bullnose in the other. I wish I had not done the decorative trim piece, tough it is a bit more ornate than what you are considering.

We used it in our guest bath shower floor as well. Nobody suggested that it wasn't good for that purpose. Should we seal it regularly?
