doing registry before downloading firefox 1.5+

I need to look at San Antonio tax appraisal. It only supports Firefox1.5+, Explorer6 and Netscape 7.

I was going to download FF1.5+ and it said I have to do 'registry cleaner' first. I have read several of your comments saying how much you didn't like the consequences of Registry Cleaners.

What should I do?

post the url. i doubt current browsers would have trouble.
is there a login?
the website may be out of date.
if the site gives you this message *and* refuses to show the proper page, the site is "stupid". you need to spoof the old browser "user agent"..

i avoid ie, but fiddler may be easiest.

firefox must have at least one extension that spoofs UA.

ua spoofing is sort of built into opera, so that may be fastest to try.

Now that I think of it- why would I even have to download FF? I use IE, Win 7 starter... I can get on sites without a problem today- why wouldn't I be able to do the search if they use Explorer6? Isn't that old/included with what I have?

Yes, with the update to Spybot to 1.5.x (don't remember the last digit, think there is a third digit) loading I found every time I do an update of Windows XP I get one or more Spybot interventions requiring I make a decision on the current update gaining access to the Registry. It has happened with Acrobat Profession updates as well. It never happened with Spypot 1.4.x. I took the default load of Spybot, I did not select anything that would active a guard action on the Registry...as said I like the idea as it should also stop any malware from loading itself at the Registry level. As also said, I wonder how auto update can work in such an environment, I believe it can not. I go for manual update anyway as I like to know update is taking place.

Thanks Randy for trying to help. That's what I've been doing, downloading and reinstalling Firefox to replace the missing file, at least once a day for the last week. The trouble is, my computer doesn't seem to keep the file and I have to do it again the next day, and sometimes later on the same day I reinstalled it. It works fine for a little while then I'm back where I started. I have been downloading Firefox 2 each time but it just...won't...stick!

Ed Bott who is a windows expert and a former editor of PC World has a great blog I often read. He some time back blogged about this subject, it is a very informative read as well as the comments area following it. I will provide a link. I know a lot of people that use various cleaner programs, and really it is a what works for one does not always work for someone else situation with them. Each person has different experience just as each user has different pc usage. The main reason for the caution in my post was simply to warn those that are not familiar with these products to know that there are situations that can occur that could really be unfortunate. Plus there are those companies out there that prey on novice users and put out junk products(all kinds of products). I think the greatest thing is when a person takes it upon themselves to educate and seek info and research deeply before taking on any kind of task! That is the real way to learn. Do your research and read all the pros and cons then you can make an informed decision. Today we cannot simply click to download and install programs because so many companies allow other things to be piggybacked in for a fee. During the install we now need to carefully view each screen where choices are available to ensure we not not have the situation you have found yourself in. AVG itself is good, no problem there. To get rid of the Google toolbar click on an open areas on the top toolbars and in the drop down menu you should be able to remove the check mark beside Google. Regarding the critical files you had listed you could download and install Superantispyware, update the definitions and run a full scan. Be sure to click on the blue button for the free version, not the green free trial version. This is an excellent program. You could/should also do a free online scan at Housecall or a similar site if you have a favourite. If this happened very recently you might consider using the System Restore feature on your computer and go back to a date prior to these events. However you should still seriously consider doing the scans.

Firefox just hours ago released a new public version 11
.. so version 1.5 surely must be old.

... I didnt know the Netscape Navigator browser still existed. Think it disappeared over 10 yrs ago.

Is it possible FF1.5 + means FF1.5 and any version following? That's what the + means to me.

i think win7 came with ie8, but ie9 is now current IE version, afaik.
Really any browser newer than ie6 sp1 (2001?) should work. but the page is "stupidly" "sniffing" ua.

I agree that that notice only means: "This web site won't work properly with browser versions earlier than those specified." I've never heard of any web site saying it will only work with an old version of a browser, or that you would have to find and install an old version to use the web site. Just go to the site with your current browser and try it. It won't hurt anything to just try, and it's a lot easier than bothering to mess around putting some old version of a browser on your computer.

thanks all- I talked with my real estate neighbor who said she has been on that site with my computer before. The site is www.bcad.org. She said you don't need a 'log-in'.

thanks ccdry- but that is a wee bit beyond my computer comprehension... I did type in the http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/download.php....full package with installer...then all it did is constant 'buffering' as in a movie clip. Nothing would ever happen after that. You are probably way ahead of me!
Did you go to the www.bcad.org site? If so, what happened for you?

ok zep!! I dont understand why I cant get 'through'. When I tried I did 'Search', entered the address, then got '0' for results.
Why would I have to download k-meleon as ccdry suggested?

No you don't have to install any other browsers, all the message meant was that it needs that version or higher of either FF or IE which is what you have.
Some of those sites take a few tries.

I spoke too soon- Yes, I got onto the first part. But when I went to 'details' it says 'server application client c/B application'.
I guess I jumped up and down too early...

Do you have a firewall that might be preventing you going there? I tried both IE and Firefox here, and no problem getting to the site. Good Luck. :-)Cat

Sorry, I thought I did..IE 9.0.5
I am finally able to get to the first page of the Bexar county tax info, but there are many pages, and when I try to go to page '2', it gives me the same info - 'Client errorC/B'.
Raven- when I try to go through the 'address information' you posted it also gives me the 'clientC/B error'.
I need to look at 200 tax listings...
I so appreciate what you have tried to tell me, although ccdry, yours is way above my head!

run ATF the directions are on the same page

it can be run on any version of windows, it does not mention 7 but it has been run on many 7 systems both 32 and 64 bit.

the other thing I would try is to disable all add ons on your IE9 and try that way.

If that does not work then trying the latest version of firefox or chrome might work I have had no problems going anywhere on that site with any browser.
