Miele Dishwasher Starch setting

Okay, I've done a lot of reading on Miele dishwashers, and heard that pre-rinsing isn't necessary. Our salesperson told us about how we never need to pre-rinse. However, we've heard this before when purchasing previous dishwashers, and none of them have EVER been able to remove things like sticky rice from our plates without a good amount of pre-washing / pre-rinsing.

We are considering the Miele Optima DW line. The La Perla line has additional wash programs, including one for starches. Is this special starch program different? How does it compare to just using the pots&pans setting from the Optima line? Will either or both of these programs be able to finally rid us of the need to pre-wash our caked-on sticky rice dishes?

I have a Miele Excella and I never use the starch feature. I use normal about 75% of the time, pots and pans 25%. I scrape off food chunks, but I rarely rinse dried on pasta or rice. The dishes come out clean, it's amazing.

I DO rinse off ketchup and excess tomato sauce, though. One time I did not rinse a bowl that had tomato sauce in it and my white plastic items turned a light pinkish-orange (temporarily).

Sticky rice......is the Mexican, Chinese,...?
I use the Pots & Pans cycle most of the time (as we do a lot of cooking) and everything baked-on the pots, and cheese that is bake-on glass casserole containers are clean. So far the Miele Diamante is the only unit I've owned that has been able to clean those effectively.

Here is what the La Perla user manual says about the Cheese/Starch mode:
For dishware with dried on starchy or cheesy food; 120% detergent recommended. It does 1 pre-rinse, 1 main wash, 1 interim rinse, and 1 final rinse.

And Here is what both the La Perla (and my Diamante) say about the Pots & Pans mode:
For normally soiled pots & pans with dried on food, and heavily soiled dishware, use 120% detergent recommended. It does 1 pre-rinse, 1 main wash, 1 interim rinse, and 1 final rinse.

When I have used the Pots/Pans mode, I checked the times, the 1st pre-rinse is 5 minutes, the main wash is 60 minutes, and the interim rinse is 20 minutes, and the final rinse is 30. So total time is about 2 hours. For the normal mode, it does 2 pre-rinses (15 min each), 1 wash (45 min), and a final rinse (30 min). So that's 1hr 45min total for the normal mode. But like I said, we prefer to use the pots/pans as it has the longer 60 min wash, and has two rinses at the end.

The main point here, and to answer your question, is that the pots/pans mode and the cheese/starch mode both run the same cycles and say to use 120% of detergent (or 20% more than what you'd use on normal). The only thing I'm not sure if that if the cheese/starch has different run-times for each cycle, or if the temperature is different.
In all honesty, If someone did a side-by-side test using the pots/pans mode on a Diamante or Optima, and the cheese/starch mode on a La Perla, I'd bet that both would turn out the same.

Thanks everybody - you're welcome and I'll post another report some time later in February about our Bosch dishwasher. robert laundry: The European market has very strict requirements as far as energy consumption goes. Every dishwasher (and most other major appliances) carry so called Energy Labels. In order for a dishwasher to achieve an A rating for energy use (very low) the temperatures have to be lowered. At the same time, however, the label also provides information about the DW's cleaning and drying performance. So while the temps have to be lowered - washing and drying times have to be extended in order to achieve an A rating for washing & drying. However, all this applies only to one specific cycle usually called Eco, Save Energy or similar. Other cycles are faster, though.

I've been looking for a stemware dishwasher and this is the closest thing I've found that can be dually efficient. We entertain a lot and washing 30 or 40 glasses by hand is not something I relish! This one has 2 adjustable stemware shelves and a lower rack wineglass shelf. On the expensive side, but I think will be worth it every time I don't have to hand wash all of those wine glasses! I've learned that my friend has one and loves it.

Momotom What model did you get? I've not had this issue even when the bottom rack is completely loaded and it always is loaded. I think the sensor for the middle rack may be in the door..I think it expects a pass from this arm every few seconds and if it doesn't get it that's when you get the warning(I could be wrong about where this sensor is it could be on the sides too). Do you have anything very tall near the door in the front of the machine? The only time I've gotten the middle arm blocked message is when something in the middle rack was sticking down through it. Chipshot I've had steel cut oats..they are like oatmeal only more oat like and chewy. I think oat bran has more fiber and carbohydrate than the meal and this is why it is so sticky and difficult. If I run cold water in the pan immediately after cooking oatmeal it will come right off...but oat bran just becomes worse. I am lazy and mostly toss in a full tab but I used 1/2 tab all last week. 1/2 tab works well but on some of the loads because they are full and heavy there was some bran left on other items(doesn't happen with full tab)..so I think a full tab is needed when you have difficult soil..however I could have used a more intense cycle with the 1/2 tab and this would have probably taken care of the bran. Then again I tend to really load items on top of each other which is not recommended either..but I do it with not much of a problem. This week I am using Cascade Gel. lgrdh Scroll up to the top of this thread and then down to see chipshots plates. Are yours deeper than these? I have two large plate inserts but have never used them. I meant to order one but ended up receiving two. These hold the plates at an angle so I think they are for tall plates not deep ones. Can your plates fit into the spaces on the right of the bottom rack? They don't have to sit upright to get clean.

Can't help you with salt - our water hardness doesn't require this - but remember reading it in the manual and sighed a sigh of relief It will be worth it in the end. I didn't formally test the water but we get a water report 2 times per year from the city - so used this. I also think there is an auto setting in the machine but not sure. Using a Miele certified rep increases your warranty to 2 years - otherwise most installers can do a Miele.... That being said - I did buy the extended warranty and used it to return the first lemon after 4 years - turns out the installer did some things incorrectly which toasted the machine in time - not to scare you but things can be done wrong. So after swearing off Miele, I studied the internet, read every review on every dishwasher, looked at the repair rates, talked to several high end appliance stores and decided - I just had the one lemon. I purchased a new one (I received a full refund) and bought my new one which has been terrific. Last night I tossed in the dinner dishes, a grungy baked on muffin tin, pots, pans, etc - everything came out clean. I am currently using the Miele tablets without additional softener as they have softener as part of the cube. I might try cutting them in half for general use. If you go with an extended warranty - I would go with the Miele version and not the local appliance store version - then they send out their repair folks. I had a minor problem with mine and explained the problem. They sent out the repair guy with the replacement part in hand - no 2-3 trips! The repairman didn't like how the top rack was working - one of the flipper bars popped off, so he said - let me just order you a new top rack and it showed up at the door - he would have come back if I needed but was easy to swap out. Everything comes out clean - I sometimes have a small drip ring at one spot on the glasses if they are at an angle which I just wipe off with a soft cloth. If they are straight up, not a problem - but some of my glasses will collect water in the base, so I tip them a bit. Enjoy!!

Okay, I just got off the phone with Miele, and they told me that the pots & pans mode and cheese/starch mode use the same temperature and have the same cycles. The only difference is that the cheese/starch program washes for 20 minutes longer.

With it in mind that the La Perla has a setting that is "stronger" than the standard pots & pans mode, and that Miele probably has a reason for creating this mode, I'm wondering how often the pots & pans mode is ineffective in getting all the food off very difficult items.

About how often do you end up with difficult food that hasn't been compeletely removed from your dishes?

See my above post, using the Pots/Pans mode I've never had any food left on any dishes or pans. The same thing could be said when using the Normal mode.
