Desktop Taskbar Curiosity

This isn't super important, just curiosity mostly -

As you know passing the pointer over the items in the Desktop task bar pops up a little window which is on top of the taskbar, BUT!

Occasionally it pops up partially behind the taskbar but not far enough up to read the whole thing and with repeated attempts it sinks lower and lower behind the taskbar till the only thing showing is the very top edge of the popup and sometimes not even that. AARRGGHHHH.

ZA and AVG and minimized items' popups seem to stay on top of the task bar; popups for Start, IE, OEX, etc seem to be behind the taskbar. After a restart they all work and are on top of the taskbar. Running XP now but I recall the same thing with W98.

How come?

This has been a problem with Windows going all the way back to Windows 95.
Tooltips for some taskbar icons are hidden behind the taskbar
There are programs that are supposed to alleviate this problem. Here's some links to them. HTH.

Well for fun I tried ToolTipFixer and got it installed but had to install (.Net Framework 2.0.50272) to do it and it wasn't clear if I was supposed to uninstall v 1.14322 first and that looked like an all day job involving concentration so I left it and now I have both versions of dotnetfx.exe installed (I guess) but I can't find v2.0.50272 anyplace on board then I never could fathom the method of getting ToolTipFixer to start. Something about needing to use Administrative Tools or Services Sumthin or Net Start none of which I could find in any help menu, any tool menu or any any menu or list of services so I cheerfully uninstalled ToolTipFixer and now I can smile again because the little 1/2 hidden popups didn't really bother me aytall in the first place I was just curious thanx for the comeback tho 10-4. :-)

Bob, left clicking didn't change anything. Right clicking didn't show me anything that looked like a lock or unlock option. Since it got moved by accident I don't think it's locked and I wish I could lock it so once it's fixed this won't happen again. Any other ideas? TIA Jann

Katy what you really need to do now is decide if in fact it is the monitor or the video card that may be quitting on you. This can be done if you can borrow a monitor from a friend or relative for a few minutes. You would not want to buy a new monitor only to discover it really is the video card that is playing up. If the monitor is as old as you suggest you would be wise not to spend any money trying to fix it. Better to buy a new one and have a year of warranty if in fact it proves to be the monitor.

Jane is this because there is not sufficient room on the taskbar to show your open windows in a row? Do you have your "Quicklaunch" bar activated? If so and all the icons show along the taskbar you need to unlock the toolbars if locked (right click on taskbar for this) then hover your mouse over the 2 vertical rows of dots on the taskbar immediately to the right of your Quicklaunch icons. Then hold the left mouse button down and drag those dots to your left so only 3 icons remain on view. Release the mouse and you should see 2 greater than chevrons similar to those on the desktop at the far right. Click on those and the hidden Quicklaunch icons appear vertically. Does that answer your problem?

You can try pressing the Ctrl Key and the Alt Key, then press the UP Arrow. This should turn the Screen Upward. As you may have figured out, Pressing the Ctrl, Alt and Left Arrow will turn it to the left, Right Arrow to the Right and Down Arrow to the Downward position. If the above method doesn't work, you may be able to change it like I can in the method below (Both will work on my laptop): It depends upon the Video Card Usually. My Laptop I'm using right now has a Rotation Feature in the Display Options. I go to the Right Corner of the Taskbar where the Clock is located. You might see an Icon for your Video Card (mine is Intel). When I click on the Intel Icon I get a menu Graphic Properties, Graphic Options and Exit Tray appear. When I press Graphic Options I get a Menu with Hot Keys, Panel Fit, Resolution, Rotation, Balloon Notifications and Profiles. When I press Rotation I get the options to rotate 0 Degrees, 90 Degrees, 180 Degrees and 279 Degrees. It doesn't give me the option to Rotate Left or Right, you'll just need to figure it out from there. BTW, I do love Zep's solution about the Cat walking Backwards. Wish I could make my cat do anything! Zep is right the Ctrl + Alt + Up Arrow should solve the problem!

Sorry they didn't work out for you. I've never had that problem with my dual-boot Windows 98/Windows 2000 so I just found the problem/programs using Google.
I also found what's supposedly an easy fix at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com that you might try. It says to:
Go to Start/All Programs: Hover over any program listed, right click and select Sort by Name. Repeat once more. All done!
Let me know if that works. Just curious.

I had the same thing happening. Here's how I just fixed it:
Start>Control Panel>Appearance and Themes. Click Taskbar & Start Menu and uncheck "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows." Now the little windows are visible on top of the taskbar.

Tried both methods - nope - not 100%.

Not only that I had to download dotnetfx 2.0 SP1 for dotnetfx 2.0

I've read the explanation of .Net Framework and it must be written for someone who knows what it is anyway. Actually I'm not convinced the writer really knew either- prolly just faking it from someone elses notes.

I saw with amusement that the ToolTipFixer was produced by NeoSmart. My sentiments exactly! :-)

Long as I'm at it I put in a new case fan and the wire was 1/4 inch too short to reach the M/B. Kind if tough soldering in a 1/4 inch piece of extension wire.
