How do I add data to a CD-R

Winxp Nero 6.4 My burner does it all. CD DVD read and write.

I am trying to make a data cd to store pics. I want to be able to add more files later. When I try to do this Nero comes up and says that any previous file that is on the disc will be unavailable if I continue the burn. I have checked all the settings in Nero and the only one that might apply is "multisession" which I have checked.

I actually got it to add a second file one time but could not duplicate it. I am not overloading the cd, only 1mb while trying to do this.

Anyone have any Ideas? Thanks in advance.....Jim

I can't help you with Nero but have you tried using the
CD writing wizard:
right click your pics and "Send to" CD-RW Drive[D]
click the ballon to see the Wizard
insert your CD-R then click "write these files to CD"
There is no multisession option to worry about and the CD stays open.
Works for me.
I can't find any "Close CD" option with Data using the Wizard unless i'm missing something.

When I right click it only gives a choice of floppy drive. Is there some other place that I can find that wizard?.....Jim

Try this: Create a folder on the H/D and name it as you wish. Mine is called Stand By. Place your CD in the drive, most likely d:/ and open Windows Explorer. In Windows Explorer click on the numeric serial number of the CD in its drive. The contents of the CD will appear in the large right window. In the small left window click on the + in front of the C:/ drive. This will open the system tree showing the folders of the drive. Locate the target picture in the large right window, and drag and drop it to the file you newly created. From there you can do anything you want with it, and the original will remain on the CD. DA

RW type disks, whether it be CD or DVD, should only be used for short term storage. Either type disks will let you transfer files to a different computer. If you use the RW type disks you can edit the files on the disks. If you use the R type disks you can copy the files to a computer, then edit the files, and then put them on another disk, R or RW. RW type disks are not a reliable storage media. If you are just moving a file from one computer to another you shouldn't delete the original until until the copy is safely on the other computer. If you are just wanting to back up files on your computer, use the R type disks and make a new copy periodically. If you have a small number of files to back up consider using a web service to store them or get a USB jump drive. (very handy to have). Whatever backup solution you choose remember, it won't work if you don't use it. Pooh Bear

Sounds like maybe the darker color thing mentioned above may also play into it. My 2001 Grand Cherokee ( factory am/fm/cd/casette player) will not recognize burned CDs. i am currently using my laptop with XP and have tried windows player, I-tunes and BurnerXP but haven't noticed any different results from any of that different software. After going thru about 30 cds burning at different speeds and formats, I finally got it to occasionally recognize one I burnt at around 4X using PCM .wav (uncompressed) format but to recognize and play I usually have to fast forward it thru a couple of songs while it is doing the initial read. Once it recognizes and starts playing then will usually play the whole CD but doesn't always work for whatever reason. I may try the label thing or try to find some of the "dark" cds to see if that matters. We have a 98 KIA witn an aftermarket cd player and it will play just about anything burnt to cd no matter format or speed.

Try:
open "My Pictures" or where ever your pics are...
click on pic you want.....on the left of screen click "Copy this file"...if you select more than one it'll say "Copy selected items" on the left..box will open...highlight drive D
click copy...then click balloon in taskbar...then "Write these files to CD"

Change the name of any files you're going to add that have the same name as what's already on the CD...if you don't they'll over write the old ones.

The alternative I chose long ago was simply to use a new CD-R each time and discard previous. Like you, I became annoyed at figuring out how to add each time and then having to check and make sure it worked each time. In quantity, I can buy them for 10 cents each anyway so I don't much care about discarding my previous accumulations.

Thanks Leslie Gardener and Asolo, I think asolo has the right idea. As cheap as cd's are I am not going to worry about it. It was one of those things that you know can be done, all you have to have is the smarts to outthink the computer.LOL.
