AGA legacy - quality, use, cleaning questions

I am trying to find a way to have two ovens without going to a 48" range, never really paid any attention to the AGA but now thinking that may be I should give it a thought.

Can the current owners please comment on the ovens in the 36" or the 44" versions? What is the largest cookie sheet or roasting pan that fits? Also, how bad is the cleaning? I checked the manual and it describes so many steps for cleaning, sounds like it could be a pain. Do the ovens need cleaning more often due to the smaller size?

Also, how is the quality overall and how is their customer service?

I too would like to hear from anyone with an Aga Legacy. I like the idea of how it would look in my 1918 house, but am worried about the small oven size and reliability.

Annab6, have you also considered Lacanche ranges as a way to get 2 ovens?

I can't speak on how the DF Legacy's burners compare to Bluestar or Wolf or even to my own Aga 6-4. What I can tell you is that the 6-4's ultra rapid burner also has a dedicated simmer function that works quite well. And, of course, all burners on the 6-4 (like most ranges) are capable of being turned down to a "simmer" rate. Both the DF Legacy and 6-4 have sealed burners. Actual cleaning of the 6-4's burners is pretty simple. HOWEVER, the fact that the rangetop is clad in black enamel means I end up cleaning it more often than I ever did before. (Black shows everything!!!) Meanwhile, having had lots of experience cooking on both open burner and sealed burner ranges now, I can't say that I see any significant difference in my cooking results based on burner design alone.

Jody Bird why do you need a new burner kit? Is it leaking gas? We have the legacy and can find the parts but not sure which part we need. The gas company said we had a tiny leak, but we don't know if it's the valve or the burner kit. What was the issue with your cook top? thanks. Fool to get Aga Legacy rather then Wolf, Viking, BS or American?

Well, we went to a different showroom today where they had the white model Aga on display in good lighting (the place with the good-priced floor model had poor lighting and the range was a more burgundy color with a black top, so details were hard to see). I think we are now backing off the idea of the Aga no matter how nice looking it is. The quality of the construction just wasn't there, especially when compared to the Wolf and Viking ranges that were sitting right around the corner from it. I want nice looking, but I also want solid construction. This just seemed too flimsy of a construction in many areas. I really wanted to buy this but just don't know if I can justify the price when we saw how some parts of it were put together. I actually spent a lot of time on the web before we went out today and found many favorable reviews for the Rangemaster Elan in Britain which I think is nearly identical to the Legacy in the U.S. And, both of the salespeople we dealt with regarding this range did tell us that the level of quality is more equal to that of the Kitchen Aid and Jenn-Air and other similar mid-range lines rather than the truer high end pro lines.

We got a vintage-looking range too (a burgundy Fratelli Onofri Royal Chiantishire double oven). What we found is that if you get plain-front stainless appliances, they complement the range without competing with it. By "plain front" I mean, no external ice/water or other external gizmos on the fridge, and no visible controls on the dishwasher (we got an Asko... at the link below, click on the "3" box to see a close-up of the kind of door and handle we got). On the Asko there's not even a manufacturer's name on the front--nothing--and I think it looks retro all by itself, much less in combination with the range. The other advantage of avoiding external ice/water on the fridge is that that is ALWAYS the part that breaks. You see more complaints about those than anything else, and when they break they can do major damage (one woman on here posted that her external water dispenser had leaked while they were away and destroyed her hardwood floor). Oh, speaking of leakage, both Asko and Bosch dishwashers have excellent leak protection. I would assume Miele does too. Here is a link that might be useful: Asko dishwasher with towel bar handle

Alku, the Lacanche would be out of our price range, I believe they are in the 8K-9K range. But when I was looking at Heartland appliances website, I saw another one with a similar setup (44inch, 2 ovens), called Toledo XT. The user manual is exactly the same as the one for AGA legacy. So it sounds like basically the same components inside, just a different look. It is new so I am hoping to get some feedback on the AGA at least. Doesn't look like there are any owners out there though.

There are definitely AGA Legacy owners on these boards! Perhaps they are not surfing the AF these days, but they are here. I've seen them post about their Legacy ranges in the past. Perhaps you should try a search for "Aga Legacy" (here and on the kitchen forum). Figure out which which posters have owner experience with the product and then try and email them directly with your questions. You can also try Yahoo's Aga forum at Agalovers@yahoo.com. (Although, frankly, I've found that most of the threads there are about the traditional Aga Cooker). Lastly, you can also try the forum that is on the Aga-ranges site. See the link I've attached below.

BTW, I have the Aga 6-4 DF. When I was trying to decide whether or not to buy it, I had one heck of a time finding consumer opinion based on those who had actually owned one. In the end, I bought it because Aga's general reputation for making a fine cooking machine was solid and the few 6-4 owners I encountered were happy with their units. (Unfortunately, my 6-4 is not installed as yet so I can't give you any honest feedback on its performance.) FWIW, I have heard good things about the Legacy.

I was at an appliance store yesterday and saw Heartland Paragon range which has the same size ovens as Toledo XT and Aga Legacy. They do look very small to me in person, so I don't think it would be a good idea without a supplementary wall oven. Will keep looking.
