WE have Verizon Fios for Internet. I'm familiar with all the free anti virus (AVG, Advast, etc) and spywares out there as well as the ones I can pay for.

Does anyone have and use Verizon's security package of virus and antispy protection. They charge $5.99/month or $72/year, good for 3 computers (I have 2). It automatically gets updated and/or checks things every 3 hours.

I know many of you don't like Nortons but I currently have it, with no issues ever. I use the free SuperAntispyare and Malware (which I don't run much, but know I should). Norton's subscription is up in 15 days so I need to get a new one.

I have Vista and like security programs to run automatically.

Do you recommend Verizon's package based on your experiences with it or things you've heard? Thanks.

If Norton is running ok why don't you keep it, there is nothing wrong with Norton. On Some pcs it can cause issues. As long as you have the resources to support the program (Ram) and it does not slow things down your ok with it.

We have had Verizon Internet and Vista Ultimate for over a year. If you feel that for peace of mind you need to have a paid Anti virus and Antispyware program, then by all means keep the Verizon. I havenÂt heard anything about it Âgood or bad. I wonder about their anti virus though, as you say you have been using Norton. It would seem that 2 anti virus programs are unnecessary. If you dump Norton, make sure you use their removal tool. before installing any new virus protection.
AVG or Avast plus the windows firewall built into Vista will take care of all your security needs and take care of a good deal of spyware as well. Weekly updating, then running SuperAnti spywear and Malbytes and Crapcleaner - all free- will take care of the rest.
I use AVG, people rave about AVAST- but as I have had no problem I havenÂt switched. As far as running in the background- AVG runs and updates all the time- when my PC is active. I donÂt know if it is the way my pc. is set, but my AVG doesnÂt update or do a complete scan when the pc. is in sleep mode. This may be just my settings. ( IÂll have to check that with my son- the systems engineer) However I have it set to start the main update and scan at 7am. Usually I have been at the computer by that time- if not I manually update and run the scan when I "wake " the pc. I do not find any "drag" or slowness of any programs I happen to run at the same time as the scan. I have had zero infections on my pc.

Do Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up your Task Manager, click on the Processes tab, and click once or twice on the CPU tab at the top of the listings: this will show what process is chewing up the most resources (which will probably be the culprit). Also, look at the CPU Usage line at the bottom of Task Manager and see what the % Usage is. Then report back here on what you found out.

I use linux also my fave distro is Mepis (dual boot with Ubuntu) but with any MS OS comes IE and with IE comes the patches so as long as it is MS OS it will have IE and therefore needs the patches. Does not really matter if we use firefox and thunderbird as I also do since IE is part of the OS. I too love linux.

Dog's death leads to a push for quicker tracing of cellphones 5:00 PM, September 4, 2008 After her SUV, phone and dog were stolen at a cemetery last month, Hemet resident Mary Michael tried to get Verizon to track the phone in the vehicle carrying her beloved pet, Rebel. Verizon said it couldn't do so without a warrant. Rebel was found dead, prompting Michael to take aim at that regulation, The Times' David Kelly reports: A distraught Michael said Rebel would be alive today if Verizon had traced the cellphone she had left inside the car. "They could have saved Rebel's life," she said Tuesday during a news conference outside Riverside County Superior Court. "It's my phone. It has GPS capability. We should be able to use it." Michael, who is originally from London and lives in Hemet, has started a campaign to make such tracking easier. Many wireless companies now require warrants before tracing phones, but Michael argues that obtaining a warrant takes too long when a life hangs in the balance. Verizon spokesman Ken Muche said state and federal privacy laws make it impossible to trace a phone without a court order. He said criminals and stalkers had impersonated customers in the past to try to find cellphone users. "We work with law enforcement and will respond to requests from the court like subpoenas and warrants," Muche said. "We have a policy in place so our customer service people are not in a position of having to determine a person's identity." Had Verizon traced the phone, it could have pinpointed the location as close as 50 to 100 yards, he said. That was cold comfort to Michael. One - who ever leaves a dog or an unattended child in a running car is ASKING for trouble especially in Southern California. Two - If she had wanted to leave the dog in the A/C cooled car she should have locked the doors and taken her remote control key or second key with her. Three - Although the dog and this woman were traumatized and victimed and it is horrible that it ended in the dogs death, THIS WAS COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE had the owner used common sense. I too have Verizon fios and LOVE IT but I have not heard a lot of good things about that security package, in fact on this forum recently we had someone that had to delete it from their pc due to issues it was causing. I did at one time use the free McAfee that Verizon furnished but I had to get rid of it because on my system it was causing major problems.
As zep said if you have no problems with Norton and want to pay for a product and all is working for you then do it.

The issue we often run into with Norton is that it uses a lot of resources and many of the older pcs just can not keep up with that and in many cases it does conflict with other programs. And really there are some great free products out there and a lot of people like free.

Go with what you are comfy with.
