A Tale Of Two Trees

For the past few years we have put up two Christmas trees. My former house was T.i.n.y. The only tree that would fit was a 4 foot table top type. When we moved into this house 8 years ago we started with one tree in the former formal living room (now the dining room) in front of the window. I then found room for another in the entry. Now that we have a dining room things had to shift and I like it so much better now with a tree in the dining room and one in the family room.

I love your story! That's really cool that Mr B puts up a tree, too! It looks great! ...old fashioned, front of a fireplace kind of tree!

& then I saw your white one...that is beautiful...love the purple & brown ornies on it...looks great in your new DR! Maxi wouldn't cooperate for a Christmas tree pic, uh? LOL!

Now, relax, sit back & enjoy! (I'm ready to wrap gifts now...& do some baking...it all comes tog, doesn't it) Finished up some more decor today ... a little at a time! ;-) TFS, maxi! Jeanne S.

Great post and great - entirely - '2 Different Trees'!
Love Mr B's with all the 'homey' ornaments. I think that is so sweet that he does that. I also loved the look of your white one. Your choice of colors is VERY striking and really I like both looks - I would love to have 2 homes to appease both tastes' ! lol
I'm so happy for you with your new DR and that you're enjoying it so much...Everything looks lovely.

jam casualties. Yup, you're right Annie. It happens to all of us. I should have clarified when speaking of less pectin in overripe fruit that I was referring primarily to traditional no-commercial-pectin preserves. Peaches don't have much pectin at the best of times. (They're also low-acid.) Without commercial pectin the condition of the fruit is critical. But you could use commercial pectin and improve the odds considerably. The problem with commercial pectin, though, is you also need more sugar for the pectin to "work." (I know, it's counter-intuitive.) Therefore the jam tends to have less of the true fruit flavor. Unless you use Pomona Pectin. You could jell water with that and can use as much or as little sugar as you like. I don't care for Pomona, but it does have its uses. Carol

The Maha in the Ground now for 4 days ! It stands a full six foot tall ! I am 6' 2" tall and it comes to the middle of my forehead. So different from the first Maha I purchased, which was both reasonably tall and also wide,..a vigorous looking tough guy ! This one, even tho it's taller is much skinnier, but I have a feeling it will fill out rapidly. Hard to see but it already has five ( 5 ) lateral limbs coming off the main trunk , all angling upwards. It was the choice of the litter that Fruitscapes had that day. Again, feel confident it'll be a choice tree,..in time maybe it's fruits will even be the size of my Vallencia Pride's, which had it's first huge harvest late last July. Talk about big fruits ! And tasty ? Words cannot describe the experience,..Hemingway could I'm sure, but not me, lol, This is it,..no more trees,..now will just be pampering all seven of them, should enough to keep me busy ! ( smile )

In short, Tree 1 (Rosa) and 2 (Nikko) took 5 years to prove that they were not pollenizers for each other. A self pollinating dwarf tree (3/Santa Rosa) was added and tree 2 and 3 produced quite well. Although last year the harvest was lighter than usual. Tree 1 was removed. This year, tree 2, being dependent on tree 3 bloomed profusely but three 3 scarcely bloomed at all and I figure that no plums will be produced this year. Tree 3 now shows profound signs of distress. A few branches on the south side seem to be healthy but the majority of the tree has drooping leaves and a significant branch has dead leaves hanging on it. Tree 2 is looking extremely well but I see no plums forming as I suspected it wouldn't. Both were trimmed in late January but we really did not have all that many freezing spells and only two snowfalls at best. A very harsh freeze happened in March which destroyed Forsythia and daffodil bloom. The second pic shows healthy leaves on the left side. The last pic, somehow looks better than it should, shows drooping leaves. If it comes to chopping down tree 3, can I plant a new tree close to the old stump? It fits my garden layout very well. Not knowing what is killing the tree begs the question.

There are many zelkova planted in a nearby walmart parking lot. They are not quite as large as the ones above, however they are starting to have terrible dieback.

Both trees are equally pretty...love the homey one with all sorts of ornaments and the white, more contemporary one too! Great job on both...loved your story too!

I absolutely love your story - opposites do attract - love the analogy to Donnie and Marie. I will have to admit I really do like the homey atmosphere of Mr B's tree - our large family tree is that way - a little bit of everything which means a WHOLE lot of ornies. Since I do over 10 trees I have just about every style. I do like the simplicity of your white tree - very elegant ..TFS .....

So pretty. I think it is fabulous that Mr. B helps decorate. Mine...not into it, but he enjoys what I do and loves to have people over to see everything once I'm done!!

I think both trees are perfect in their locations.

How did I miss this post?? I did see your two trees on your blog the other night tho. And the story about their being so different. So looks like you guys NAME your trees...Donnie and Marie. LOL.

Both trees are wonderful, and such an interesting contrast in them. (Purple and brown, I never would have thought of pairing them but they look really good together!)
