I'm keeping some Christmas..And Tree talk

Sorry this is so long,but my new Christmas tree really made a difference this year in helping me with the Christmas Spirit, and now I don't want to take it down! lol. Because of the remodel I was finally able to get the tree that *I* wanted even though I had to pay a little extra for it.

If any of you are in the market for a new artificial tree, now is the time to buy one online. I bought this tree online last January. Also, if you've never had a white tree, you would not believe what a difference it makes in a room! Next year I'll add more ornaments and doo dads, but here is the tree as it is now..I've added more ornaments since my last picture.

I also keep the ligts on during the daytime, with my old green tree I didn't. And when the sun is shining on this tree, it is just gorgeous!

In my "Victorianish" sitting room I decided to make a "Christmas Wall" for year round. I have received two "Victorian" stockings over the past couple of years and they are just too pretty to put away.

The angel was made by my MIL, on the next wall you can see more of her work, I have the whole wall lined with her sewing. The picture is a card I received this year which I framed because it's also Victorian. I put red tissue paper behind it.

The stocking on the right is a deep green made of velvet.

Do any of you keep a little Christmas around the house all year long, or am I just crazy? lol

I love white trees!!! Good for you getting the one you wanted. I had to wait years for mine too.

I got my new one for this new house a few days before Christmas. Hubby found it on line at way less than 1/2 price. We decided not to put it up this year. Since I already had the one in the family room.

(the other white one is only 4ft and I didn't put it up this year, but next year it will go in the pink guest room)

The day after Christmas I went out and bought more ornaments for the new white tree. Its a 7 and 1/2 ft one, so of course I needed more! All teal, silver and white and all on sale 1/2 price.

I agree,there is something special about a white tree, it changes everything. :)

I only keep one Christmas ornament out year round. A small angel given to each of us by the mom of a returning soldier at DFW airport, to thank us for coming out to greet her son. I cherish it.

Love your tree. It is lovely. I have a tree in an urn that I keep with white lights year around in the dining room. Each Holiday (Valentines Day, Easter, 4th of July, Birthdays etc.) I decorate it with that paticular theme. I decorate my guest bedroom tree to exactly match the room so it looks fine (to me) to leave it up all year. I do take them down when they are dusty, clean all of the ornaments, and vaccumn the tree. Anything with traditional red/green Christmas themes are taken down. That way they are extra special to unpack and decorate next Christmas.

I think that's a fantastic looking plant! PG's idea of gently wedging a rock against the base would probably be all it needs to be upright. I probably wouldn't take many cuttings from that now since hopefully it will make some flower buds soon. Since it's not yet, I wonder if it's in a room where you have bright lights on after sunset? "...prefer to be root bound." No plant prefers that. What is happening is root rot in pots of stuff that has no air pockets in it, and takes forever to dry out. As long as one has a chunky, porous, airy mix, and doesn't constantly pour water in there (or allow it to sit in a drip saucer,) the pot size is irrelevant. It can take some doing to figure out what kind of soil goes well with the kind of plant person you are. It sounds like you love to water them often? "Do I need rooting hormone?" I agree with J, no hormone needed. In the case of wanting a more full pot like this, I would stick any cuttings in the pot with the mama plant, aimed in the other direction slightly. Just use a knife to make a slit & slip the end that was attached to the mama plant in there, doesn't seem to matter how far, as long as at least most of the lowest section is under the surface. "Perhaps last time I used too much water." Probably. A *succulent* cutting with no roots can't absorb water, it can only rot. When taking the cuttings, let them sit in the air overnight for the cut part to heal/seal. This should prevent fungus/bacteria from being able to 'get in,' prevents further loss of moisture, and definitely notifies that piece of plant that it needs to grow some roots "in search of moisture, not because it is adjacently present." When placed within the roots of an already-growing plant, I have much better luck with propagating (outside of the realm of the glass of water you mentioned, which does work well for many non-succulent, leafy plants.) The mama plant prevents the soil from staying too moist around the cutting even while watering as usual. This is the only way I've had luck with Begonia cuttings in particular. I can't NOT hover over a pot with nothing but cuttings either. That usually results in loving them to death as you described. I successfully forget about those tucked under mama plants and haven't had any TC cuttings fail this way, in pots with other TC's and completely different plants that 'need' something leaning out at the bottom in my strange plan to make every pot a mini tropical jungle. Knowing whether cuttings require drying (callousing) and which should go immediately in water/moist soil is the 1st step to success, glad you asked. The one pot of TC cuttings I tried without any existing-roots plants in the pot was this one. Having seen pics of people doing them this way, and knowing how I hover over a pot of cuttings, I chose to lay them mostly flat on the surface. they definitely sell topsoil around here...by the bag or by the truckload...it sure looks pretty but it's definitely garbage. don't throw things at me though...because i just used some in my mom's yard. her soil was too rich for the type of garden she wanted...xeric. she had added so much compost over the years..i just knew the heads of all of her echinacea would be flopping over in no time! so...i had to basically cut the quality of her soil a bit. sad..huh? i added only 6 cubic feet...i'm not sure if it will make a difference or not..but i wasn't going to add compost! when i put in my raised beds, i ordered something called planter's mix. i think it was a 70% topsoil 30% compost mix...and i STILL had to add TONS and TONS of compost and manure to get that soil fertile enough to grow good plants. the soil was horribly hydrophobic too! anyway..in horticulture class..my professor warned everyone against "topsoil." he said it has no organic matter and will not support plants on it's own. in my soil class...we learned that silt makes great soil! so edie...just start adding compost and you'll be happy with your soil in no time!

Ok, so-- 1) I'm somewhat inland- we get more sun that SF-- temps regularly reach the 80's and 90's in the summer, very rarely over 100, common morning fog burning off well before noon. 2) Common butterflies in the area-- Western Tiger Swallowtail, Pipevine Swallowtail, Anise Swallowtail, West Coast Lady, Painted Lady, Monarch, skippers, perhaps the Mourning Cloak as well. All that's from other butterfly gardeners though, as I'm pretty new to this. Perhaps if Joe posts on here, he can give a more detailed answer about what we have around here. I'd love to hear if people have had personal experience with the bushes-- how they grew, how fast, how high, lots of butterflies? etc etc I figure you guys have got to be the real experts on that.

Duh. I stand corrected. Me foolish, not them. I meant to say black on white. I'd be surprised if the 9/64 is the security type because it is not even laminated. Too small maybe for that? I have see the security kind, also very new, in a different section with a different code format. Can't find out much about it. Not really sure what it does when it gets "tampered with". Be cool if it beeped or smoked or threw red dye, but I doubt it does much other than "show" it has been messed with.

Your white tree is gorgeous! I wish I had the space for a big tree like that, but I think I am going to do what suiewantsroses does - get a tree in an urn with white lights (my SIL has 3 different sizes set up next to her fire place) and just leave it out all year. My grandkids would absolutely love decorating it for various holidays. I may look for something like that this weekend.

I think your white one is just lovely, Oakleyok! Very pretty and I can imagine how it glows with color at night. I'm so happy for you that you got your dream tree at last!

Oakleyok, your tree is beautiful! The lights on it look so pretty. I bet it's a joy just to sit in the room and look at it.

I would love to have at least one white tree, but my family vetos that suggestion every year. I do get to enjoy them though as my aunt has two 4 ft ones that I decorate for her each year.

Your tree looks really pretty, Oakleyok. The white really lets the ornaments show up well. I used to have my real tree flocked each year and loved it that way--but it started getting so expensive. I don't leave any Christmas up all year, but if it gives you pleasure, you should do what makes you happy--those are lovely stockings. Luvs

Your tree is fabulous! My sister picked up her white tree after Christmas last year. White trees make the best canvas.

I have Hallmark wreath that I can hang up 8 ornaments. I change out the ornaments for the seasons & holidays; Valentine, St. Patricks, Easter, spring, summer, 4th of July, Halloween & Thanksgiving. I have a separate wreath for Christmas.

Oakleyok, so wonderful to hear your enjoying the Christmas season this year. I posted last night but it didn't make it. Keep your tree and decorations up as long as your enjoying them. I thinks it's wonderful that you want to display items all year that mean alot to you.

I don't leave anything up from Christmas unless it's by mistake and I've just missed it. This happens alot and within the month I've usually found the last of the hidden decorations.

I really like your white tree with the colored lights and ornaments. I remember one comment from last night was did you put extra lights on or am I seeing things?LOL

I was thinking I'd like to find some pink lights to add to my pink tree for next year. The hard part will be finding ones with white cord instead of black from Halloween.

Watch for pink lights in February. I have some. Mine are on pink cords, which might not be exactly what you're looking for, but certainly better than black cords.

Oak, just do what makes you happy. We all need sparkle in our lives, and if anyone calls you crazy they are probably just jealous. LOL, besides, what's wrong with a little crazy? (rest of the world is often insane IMO).
Your tree is beautiful and I don't blame you for wanting to enjoy it a long time.

Don't you know it's bad luck to take your decorations down before twelfth night (Jan. 6)? So there's an excuse to enjoy it a couple more days. :)

Thanks for the tip. I never thought about finding them next month and I'll bet your right. I will have to have white cords or it may look hideous.

I wish I had the room and I would have french doors that open and my tree would be all decorated and ready for Christmas. What do you think about this? If we remodel it may happen.

I posted the other night and it disappeared, so I'll try again.

I've had my 7 1/2' tree up for 4 years and I still love it. It is in the livingroom and that is my favorite room. In the early morning hours when I wake up and can't go back to sleep and don't want to disturb DH I will go in and just sit and enjoy the lights and ornaments.

I took some pictures to show you, but I didn't like any of them enough to post. It is so much prettier IRL than my pictures. It has colored lights on it. It is decorated in mostly blue, white, and silver except for some of the approx. 50-60 birds on it.

If I ever take it down I will add more lights and maybe some white ones to brighten it up a little. It came prelit and doesn't have quite enough to satisfy me. I like LOTS and LOTS of lights. Other than that, it is perfect.

My family teased me a lot at first, but they finally accepted it. I guess the neighbors across the road and the people driving up the road have gotten used to the crazy lady who lives up on the hill with the Christmas tree lit up in the window at odd times during the year!!

Keep your tree up as long as you are enjoying it. Life is short. Grab the enjoyment while you can.

Betty, I think it's wonderful that you leave your tree all the time! Mine is still up and I'm in no hurry to take it down.
