Talking with a Dell Tech...

told me they will begin selling Windows 7 in September. Suggested waiting to purchase a computer until 7 comes out if you can wait. They will continue to sell and support XP.

Said Windows 7 will be a new install not an upgrade. It will replace XP/Vista.

Will all of the negative attention surrounding Windows Vista, there is no doubt that it was Microsoft biggest operating system failure ever (or maybe since Windows ME). Microsoft has poured millions into advertising and has fixed many of Vista's problems, but should you make the switch now or wait until Windows 7 in 2009?

Windows 7 is not a really a brand new version of Windows. At it's core, it is Windows Vista. But think of Vista as the beta version of Windows 7 - it's the same core architecture, but they went through the code from the bottom up to make speed and memory improvements in every phase of the software. Frankly, Windows 7 is what Vista should have been when it was released. Microsoft rushed the product and the result was the debacle we see now.

And even though Windows 7 is supposed to fix some of the problems of Vista, do you want to be the first one on the block to try this version out? Usually it's a good idea with any new operating system to let others be the guinea pigs for the first several months...

wizard, I just wanted to say I have a 6 year old Dell, and though I can no longer extend the warranty (could only get it for 5 years), the last 2 years I had what was called Gold Support. I'm not sure if I paid extra for that over wwhat it would have normally cost for years 4 and 5, but with the Gold Support, my repair call was to be answered in 5 minutes....and it always was. Additionally, other than the initial repair call to tech support which was overseas (India I think) all the later calls were to US tech folks. LMK if you ever want me to check for a US repair # for you. My one and only call to India was a disaster and drove me nuts. Additionally, since having the Gold Warranty for years 4 and 5, I am entitled to tech support for the life of the computer.

This is how to replace RAM in a PC. It just takes a few simple steps to do this, it is really not that hard. You can trust me since I have an a+ certification in computer hardware and software. I know what I am doing, I am an expert. 1. First of all, you need to shut off your computer. To do this press the power button on the front of the computer after you have shut it down from Start> Shutdown on your start menu. 2. Unplug the power cord from your computer. This is the big black/white/grey plug that plugs into the power supply on the back of your PC. 3. Unplug the rest of the wires from the back of the computer. 4. Find a sturdy flat surface on which to work on. 5. Unscrew all screws from the back of your computer except the power supply screws. You will make a mess if you unscrew the power supply screws. 6. Open your computer up by taking the side panel off, or sliding the cover off. It might be difficult but it will come off if you have taken all the screws out. 5. Now before touching anything inside, it is a good idea to hook up to an anti-static wrist strap. If you dont have an anti-static wrist strap, just touch the side of the computer where it is metal to deshock yourself. Then when you touch the inner components you wont risk damaging any of them. 7. Find the RAM, it should be a 4 inch card sticking out horizontally on the motherboard. 8. Once you find the RAM, find the clips holding it in on either end of the ram, hold your thumb over both ends of the clips and firmly press down on the clips. They should pop the ram out. 9. Remove the RAM. Now that you've removed the ram, the next step is to reinsert some new ram into your ram slots. To do this keep the clips on both sides open, and slide the ram into the slot if it doesnt want to go in you might have it going in backwards so try both ways until you get a good fit. Make sure the ram is not lopsided when its clamped down or it will not work. Thank you, happy computing! you said you got a virus and know that is the problem, well that is not up to Dell support to fix, under any circumstance. Their support is for their product (they do provide online guides and manuals for each pc have you looked for yours), they are not there for assistance in removing infection. If you had a part that failed on the computer then they should help with that but something that is being caused by a virus that you got by doing something is not Dell's fault. Now I am NOT a Dell fan, I personally would not buy one. But any PC manufacturer certainly has the right to say no to that type of situation. If they have helped before they went way beyond the scope of their support requirements. I do own ACER and HP and would not consider calling either of them for help if I had an infection. This is why you should go to the free forum I listed and ask for help to clean your machine. Run a malwarebytes free scan How to download and install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware application for Windows computers which may fix this problem. Go to an online AV and do a free scan there also ESET Online Scanner What antivirus is on your pc? is it fully updated and does it run weekly scans? what other antimalware scans do you run? Have you run the secunia tool to make sure everything is fully updated on the pc to help prevent any infections through out dated programs like adobe, java and flash? Anything is possible at BB. The first one I took back had a corrupt hard drive the second developed so many problems that a very qualified award winning certified Microsoft volunteer who has followed that old computer suspects this is what happened. As for the new one I had to replace. Costco concierge service did diagnostics on the phone with me and came to the conclusion that it needed to be returned because the operating system was not responding at all and perhaps the hard drive wasn't installed. It was plugged in and had a friend go through all of the plugs as was asked of us by the service. I took out all of the sockets in my place and had them replaced to meet the country wide code and also bought new surge protectors for my computer. I also have not put in any Microsoft software. The more I read the more I am not qualified to put it in and take care of the problems that most likely will ensue. I called a Microsoft store. There is a central phone bank in Texas that answers for all the calls that come in to the stores around the country. They could not get the store near me to answer the phone and suspected they were all busy. They tried three times as I stayed on the phone. I am not allowed to have the direct number to the store. There are many menus and the idea is you can help yourself by listening to these menus. I want to know if I can bring my PC and buy some software and have them install it.. This can all cost about the same price as my computer. I would like to talk with Bill Gates. The stores have also got bad reviews around the country. There are some excellent ones too but din't reign. I appreciate the idea of not wanting to go through a learning curve for both an operating system that people complained about so vehemently that they made one revision that will help me but then you have software that is either a rental package or a package deal that has difficulty with Outlook That's okay if I have step-by-step instructions or near an IT person which I always had at work. If Bill Gates is reading this please leave a message.

I'm not buying a computer, I was talking to this guy because I need a card reader replaced on my desktop. I have three desktops and one laptop. They are all XP and I bought the laptop in Dec. and ordered it with XP. Dell is still selling computers with XP. I use my computers for business and wanted to avoid any headaches getting them to all work together.

I asked the tech if I could install Windows 7 on my computers and bypass Vista completely. He said it would be a fresh install and there would be no reason to have Vista. He said they've been using Windows 7 for a while and it is smooth as glass, faster and smoother than XP. He explained that the majority of their business customers stayed with XP and didn't purchase Vista. They could transition to Win 7
without ever dealing with Vista. He said Win 7 is fast and, so far, flawless.

We purchased a Vista laptop for our son and I have used it many times. It does run very well and the only problems we ran into were with some glitches with some software. Otherwise, it was fine.

I'm glad I stayed with XP.

Sometimes I have to wonder whether so many people dislike Vista because so many people say they are supposed to dislike it? If you know what I mean? I like it, myself. No complaints here.

I've used vista for 15 months now.. and still takes me a while to find things not used everyday. They hide stuff in it.

IE8 gave me a tuff time getting it installed and working right, but I think now its faster than heck on the third install.
