I assume you're talking about adobe reader. If you would try Foxit reader I think you would uninstall adobe reader and forget it. I did. If not uninstall the old and install the new.

Bob414 got me interested. I have used Foxit for the longest time now and it is a great little program at just over 2 megs in size.

Just for curiosity check my link below and see how Adobe has become bloated over time. It too started out at around 2 megabytes in size but is now over 22 megs. And this is just a PDF reader.

I'm confused. Why is it I frequently get pop ups when I'm browsing a pdf document asking me to download the latest version of Adobe? I assumed I needed Adobe to access it. You're telling me there are other readers out there that will do the same thing, only better? By the way, my computer says Adobe 6.0 is 43 mb.

Foxit does everything adobe reader does and more. For one you can add text to a pdf form with Foxit.

The popup is actually telling you that you need a pdf reader application. Since your system only has Adobe that is the application associated with pdf by default.

I agree with all the prior posts. Try Foxit and I am confident that you will end up removing Adobe.

OK, I go to download Foxit and find I have four choices:
Installer (2.13 mb), Zip Pkg (2.45mb), .msi (3.65mb), and W/toolbar (3.36mb). I want the simplest of tools -- just enough to read the web pages I am interested in that are in pdf format. I assume I download "Installer." Right?

Would you believe!!!!???? I went for Foxit to install "Installer", and it no longer exists. They just issued new versions. I hope someone can tell me which one is the equivalent of the old "Installer".

I downloaded Foxit awhile back and it works just fine my problem is I cannot unistall Adobe Reader version 7.0.7 I go to the Control Panel click on remove it tells me something about patches and pdf shell.dll, also I have Adobe Flash Player Active X version 9.0.115.0, not being to computer smart am afraid to do to much, but would like to remove it as I see it takes alot of disk space.

When you are multi-tasking is when you will see the difference. It's not just the size on the H/D of AR, it's also the increasing resources to run it.

OK, I downloaded Foxit (exe.). I went to a couple of web sites in PDF (which Google lists as Adobe Acrobat --??). They opened up faster and under a new format, so I guess Foxit is reading them. I went to Adobe and found that it is temporarily disabled. I suppose what happened was that when I installed Foxit, somehow it became the default reader and automatically disabled Adobe. Have I got this all right?

Also my computer says that the Foxit program is 5.4mb, not the 2.2 it is supposed to be. I will see if I can remove Adobe. I note one person has had difficulty.

It's all personal preference. If you were me and looked in your start up list with the idea of skinning things down,, eliminating unnecessary start up items to hopefully speed your boot time and reduce running loads/resources ,,,and in that start up list saw something titled along the lines of AcrobatQuickLaunch that you probably only use 5 times per week for a moment. That might be one item you'd prefer not to be starting at every boot and have constantly running in the background.

I dont have it installed so I cant look to see where it starts from at boot but it would be in the registry under one of the Run keys, or it might be in all users or maybe user start up folder which maybe have it listing under Start/All Programs/StartUp.

That link in your graphic is on your start menu & is just that, a link, to lauch the program manually - Acrobat runs in the background since the past few versions because so many people had complained it takes too long to start. As you can imagine, that large of a program doesnt just pop to attention when needed if they don't partially load it at boot.

When I want to use it, it is in my All Programs list.

I did DL Foxit but was scared to check it for my default on run as I am worried about how to get the Adobe back for default. (Where to do that)
So I really can't experiment with it to find out how it loads, etc. when needed.

My friend says she uses and likes PDF-XChange Viewer by Tracker Software Products.

Don't know how that one is but am going to Google to see.
