If you have 9 foot ceilings, what height windows and doors?
Comments (24)I'm going through the same thing right now. In my humble opinion, with 9' ceilings and 6' 8" doors you do not want to line the windows up with the doors. No older home designed by a real craftsman ever did that. The windows were always higher. I've been in many older houses with high ceiling and the windows are always higher than the doors and it looks great. I was also just recently in a newer build McMansion type house with 9' ceiling and the windows were all at 6'8". This was the first time I had ever actually seen this in person and it made this conclusion very clear to me; it looked terrible. The windows looked too low. It looked cheap and awkward. It looked like a mistake. From what I've seen, the minimun you want to go is 90". That gives you 18" top and bottom for 6' windows. I don't think you ever want there to be more space on top than on the bottom with a window. With doors it doesn't matter because they obviously always go right down to the floor. I think anywhere between 90 and 96 looks good. I'm personally trying now to decide between 90, 92 and 96....See MoreCan I put a 5 foot tall window at counter height with 9 foot ceilings?
Comments (10)@Amy, building to PPF's drawing using an engineered header to carry the 2nd floor load will cost your builder more than slapping a couple of 2x12's above the windows and below the doubled top plate (I suspect that's where his 15.5" came from: 1/2" window RO gap, 11 1/4" for the 2x12, 3" for the doubled top plate - which is more like 14 3/4" but who's counting?). How much more? Maybe ~$100 for an 8' beam, but that's a SWAG without knowing anything about the loads from the 2nd floor and roof....See MoreHelp! Comments (21)Al Birdseye, assuming you have an interior floor plan with all the spaces you require and an exterior design that goes with it, you've done a lot of work for a novice. Most people don't get that far. But don't build that design yet because you're only about 20% into the design process. A professional can put together what you did in minutes as a starting point then go through a lengthy process of refining the design until it's ready for construction. Hiring an architect to take over at this time is the safest bet but if you still want to do it yourself, be ready to learn and slog through the rest of the design process. One suggestion is to set your sight high by selecting an architect designed house as inspiration then keep comparing your design with his to gauge how close to the finish you're with your design. Comments (2)There is no info . I love my 8’ ceilings in my MCM ranch and so the vaulted ceiling is not a big must for me. I need to see the plan window size is decided from many bits of info I have avery sunny space with large windows and would not find a higher ceiling and higher windows would make much difference plus the fact vaulted ceiling gobble heatin and cooling , have weird effects on sound so really post some pics of your house as it is and the drawing of the addition placement then maybe you will get some help. BTW also areallly good idea to share your style....See Moredixiedoodle
