How did you uninstall Norton is the first question?

This program needs a special uninstaller that you download & run, Did you do that?

also many times if you have certain infections of malware they will prevent you from accessing or downloading and installing any type of Antivirus or security programs, or websites.
It is possible you have an infection that is blocking them.
As zep said you definitively need to make sure the Norton was fully removed using the tool and even then there will probably be random bits and pieces left, you can go through and look for any symantec or norton files and delete them. That can cause some install issues too.

I just went to Add/Programs and unistalled, I'll use the Norton's Removal tool and try then to install SpySw. If it doesn't work and it's due to a virus how the heck am I going to get rid of it if I can download an antivirus? OMG, am I sunk or what? Mlou

What ever Anti Virus your going to use, in replacement of Norton AVG, Avast, or what ever download it now don't install it yet. Spysweeper is not an Anti Virus.

No, you are not stuck if you have a virus that has disabled things. Use the computer you are now using and download Avast to a thumb drive and also download the latest definitions. You should then be able to install the program from the thumb drive, update and run to see if the computer is clean.

I used the Norton tool and did a Search for Norton and Symaantec..didn't come up with anything. Any other way I should look?

My SpySweeper is actually Webroot Antivirus w/antispyware though I still call it SpySweeper though :) Is Avast better than Webroot's antivirus? I had Webroot send me another copy and downloaded it to a thumb drive as well as the Avast and updates to it. What next? Mlou

It's your choice, Avast is free & could be used on both computers, Webroot as far as I know only 1 computer. I guess it's one subscription per computer at 39.00 per year.

I used Norton removal tool, downloaded Avast & updates to flash drive, even emptied temp files and downloaded malwarebytes cleaner from Malwarebytes.org. Tried installing Avast and same message- file corrupted. Think I should just give up and use the recovery disk? Thank you all for your help. Mlou

I'm confused why you are using a flash drive to download Avast? ect.

Zep I had suggested downloading Avast to a thumb drive from the computer being used as I presumed it was a clean computer and not the one with corrupt files. Mlou seems unable to download onto the troubled computer. I have had to do that when trying to clean infected computers.

I found Avast could clean a computer enough to allow running Superantispyware or Malwarebytes to take care of other things causing the troubles.

Mlou, is your recovery program on CDs or DVDs? If it is on a partition on the hard drive you have no idea if that too is corrupt so you really would need to clean the computer first.

Maybe it's time to boot to Safe mode w/networking go directly to malwarebytes site an try it,

I understand the flash drive thing an it should work but it's not.
