brain dead external hard drive!!

Is there any hope for a hard drive that will click about 3 times and then spin down? It started to click, so I hurriedly started backing up some files that I hadn't already backed up and before I could get them all backed up, it quite showing up in windows explorer. I did get it to show one time. I could see folders but when I opened them, they were empty.

Western Digital. I think it's called "my book"?

You might try Spinrite. I've been able to recover data from otherwise dead drives with it. It's $89.

If you can get the drive to run try this
click Start
click My computer
right click on the drive in question
click Properties
click the Tools tab
click Check now to run chkdsk

If that finds nothing and you can determine the model of the hard drive then download the diagnostics from the link below.

Nasty. I've never been officially diagnosed with migraines, so I just call mine "sick headaches," but I've never had to deal with anything as horrendous as what you described. I can't even imagine. I can give you some more input if you and your doctor decide you need medication, though. A couple of years ago, my psychiatrist prescribed Topomax for me as a mood stabilizer in addition to my other medications. I've been taking it ever since. The thing about Topomax is that its primary use is as a migraine preventer - mood stabilization is actually a side effect. I've only had two "sick headaches" since I started taking it. And as far as I know, Topomax doesn't have the potential for heart complications that Imitrex does. One of my co-workers had to go to the ER after a dose of Imitrex sent her heart into severe arrhythmia. As a first line of defense, my son's neurologist (he sees him for his ADHD) recommended Excedrin Migraine for his migraines, to be taken at the first indication of an aura. He says it works often enough to be worth trying at school if one comes on for him there. (We haven't had to put it to the test yet, so I can't give you firsthand information on results.) It might be worth keeping a small bottle in your purse, especially over Thanksgiving. Sending you a big bunch of sunflowers, Michelle, in hopes that you don't have to deal with this again very often if ever.

Sweets, you should come to the South west corner of the state, you'll see more deer than you can shake a stick at. BTW, you can thank the lawyers and state laws for people posting their land no trespassing. If someone trespasses on your land and gets hurt they can sue you for damages. Not everyone has lots of money for homeowners insurance. OHIO on the other hand has a no fault law, so if you are trespassing and get hurt, too bad! I agree with the wrongness of the destruction of farmland, but until the land was cleared of trees, there were even fewer deer around. Deer are not normally forest dwellers. They like open woods. We have mostly trees on our lot, but the deer are everywhere, spreading ticks everywhere they go. We live in the boondocks and have 60 acres and only one house on it. We haven't cleared anything for housing projects. And yet the deer are a menace here. It's true you can't hunt just anywhere, but there are gamelands that you can go to. We have game lands right near us as well. Unless you want to buy your own property and hunt, you're stuck. And, pay property taxes and have to get a hunting license anyway. As for 'ruining' it for the next generation, I don't agree with that. The 'next generation' would rather play video games than go outside. Plus, people have trespassed on our place numerous times, many of them are RUDE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO REGARD FOR ANYTHING or ANYONE, and why should we just let them do what they want on our place? They trespass, they are rude, they gut them and leave the guts there and are jerks on top of it all, why let them hunt for free? As for hitting deer, they run right into your car LOTS of times, and NEITHER my DH or I speed at night. Deer are DESTRUCTIVE. They are so bad here that people must be shooting them from their cars because the game commission is making decoy deer and lying in wait for people to go and shoot them. They are a BIG problem. Just be lucky you haven't wrecked all your vehicles because of them.

I have the 1TB Western Digital My Book Essential which has the USB3 connection (compatible with USB2). I use EaseUS Todo free backup program. First I make a complete image of my internal HDD, and then I can schedule backups on whatever schedule I wish. I love this program for its ease of use after struggling with Acronis. I am very pleased also with the WD external drive. They do stand behind their warranties and replaced an internal HDD that failed, without question. All hard drives are subject to failure, so I think you're okay as long as you stick with a name brand.

John, I understand that fear - to a degree. However you currently have a useless drive with data on that you wish to recover. Taking it to a shop will possibly cost as much or more than a new drive. First try using the drive on another computer if possible. Have you considered the possibility that the power supply has failed? If that fails look around the edges, from all the sites I visited I cannot see all around but there might be a snap fit type feature holding the outer casing to the body of this thing. Try prying along the seams with a thin flat blade screwdriver. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Keep the faith baby...I was ready to toss this thing this morning and thought I would try one more time...LO AND BEHOLD, THE DARN THING WORKED and I was able to backup all my files..WHO'D A THUNK?

often once it cools down completely it will start again, in fact putting one in a zip lock bag and in the freezer overnight will often allow you to quickly get your info off of a dieing drive, some people use dry ice to really chill them quickly. Keeping the dry ice in a zip lock also and on the hard drive while it is hooked up (but not in the tower) can make it operate a bit longer than just putting it in the freezer.
the freezing it makes the metals contract enough that they go back in to their proper place and work till it heats back up then it quits again.

I don't think external drives are designed to run all the time. Mine is hooked up only when I need to tranfer data on or off the drive even though my case also has a small fan in it for air movement.

Glad you got it going again though

same here mine do not stay on and I do not use their file backup software which backs up as you go

I'm seriously thinking of attaching a heat sink to my internal drives.

A couple of weeks back, I lost one main drive and it corrupted
a slave drive. I used GetDataBack to retrieve most of my data.
Had to mount the drives externally and sit here with a fan
blowing on them to keep them cool. I think a heat sink would be good.

I bought a 1 terabyte external drive to back everything up on.
And I only plug it in when it is being used.
