Recovery files from hard drive?

Have any of you used a program and successfully got pictures back

from hard drive? Computer crashed and lost files, it's been re formatted

and we will try to recover files, there are some programs out there

to do so....haven't tried yet, it's my wife's thing and she said that she

will try a program....I don't' know which one. I'll let you know what happens.

My son ran one and got some of mine that I had accidentally "erased" back. But, not too many. Hope you have better luck than I did.

If you haven't done anything else on the computer, it helps. The files are still there, they just need to be "found". At least until you startwriting over them with new material.

Leo Laporte "tech guy" usually suggests Spin Rite on his radio show. You may want to compare with an independent computer store. They probably have spin rite and maybe the price is not much different for them to do it. I think Leo mentioned it was $75 to buy.

It really does not matter that you only need a small drive, they are gone. Replaced by larger volume drives, planned obsolescence. You could remove the existing drive from your enclosure and replace it with a new drive but the savings seem minimal. Then you have the aggravation of doing the task. You would need to determine if the current drive is 2.5 or 3.5 inches and whether it is SATA or PATA (IDE 40 or 80 ribbon data cable) As the drive appears to have failed there is no loss to your attempting to remove the drive if you feel so inclined. Tigerdirect has hard drives from $70 but they also have complete external drives for $90 so you would be saving $20 for a DIY job.

Moving DVDs from the drive to hard disc and rename

Make sure the file you have created is not still open. Close your burner software and any other software accessing the file, and remove the dvd from the drive. Then try to rename it again. If you still can not rename it, right click the file in windows explorer, select properties, and ensure that it attributes are not set to protected, hidden, or read only. If they are, uncheck the boxes, click apply, then click ok. Try to rename it again. if this still does not work, try rebooting your conputer. If this still does not work, please type the exact error code you receive here.

Help with Western Digital My Book external hard drive

I reformatted the My Book - which went smoothly. The copied a short video. Again - worked well. Now I'm copying a whole bunch of videos - and it's taking time. I'm copying about 10-15 hours of standard definition tv shows. So far, it's been over an hour. I have no idea how long it will take via USB2 connection. The 30 minute video took less than 5 minutes. I have follow-up questions. I wonder what the best way is to back up these files. I just opened up My Documents and right-clicked one at a time - then chose the option to "send to" and selected drive e: my book. I'm sure there's a better way to do this, but I don't know what it is. I tried to highlight more than one file at a time (using the shift key) - but it didn't seem to want to let me highlight more than one at a time. I also wonder if I send a file to MY Book - does that mean it's moved to My Book and the original isn't on my PC - or is it copied there? Raven - I know I should know this by now, but I don't. How do I find my firefox profiles and bookmarks files so I can copy them to the external drive? Lastly, is there a way to copy files to the external drive in such a way that I can get prompted if the file already exists? so I don't make a copy and have 2 copies in there? with many files (like pictures), I may get a prompt that says the file already exists - should I overwrite it or skip. Is there anything like that when copying files to the external drive? At some point, should I bite the bullet and buy a software program to do this. Western Digital tries to give trial periods for the following software : Memeo Autobackup, Memeo Autosync. Any reason to get these? Or any other software? Also, when I reformatted the drive, it wiped the drive clean. Is there anything (drivers, software?) I would need to download from Western Digital (to replace anything I might have erased). I know that the proprietary software that's sometimes loaded with these things (like cameras, printers) may not be necessary at all. Thanks. Lynn.

Thanks everyone. Lots of useful methods. Mikie - it's good to know about moving entire folders (I don't have my video's in folders - yet - but am just discovering how useful that would be for shows I've recorded for a few seasons - having them altogether). I'd like to double check and ask what "a cmd window" is - and how I'd get there. Again - I have Windows XP (SP3). Sorry to say, Mikie, but I also need more explanation for what "make a shortcut to the destination , within the folder the files are in... then select a bunch of what I want to move, cut&paste onto the shortcut" means. I know someday I'll understand all of this, but I don't know how to make a shortcut to the destination. And once I cut and paste onto the shortcut, what do I do with it? Absolutely there are some big files - so I'm glad to told me to break it up into smaller chunks. I have so far. Thank you. Lynn.

Our computer at work crashed and we had to send the hard drive off to a data recovery service. They recovered everything including thousands of photos, but it can be expensive.

Reformatted! That's scary. If you do manage to recover files, likely it will be fragments of files. It depends on what happened during formatting. If partitions got moved, many files are busted. If the new partitons (end of sector flags) fell where the old partitiosn were, many files can be recovered.

Here's what should have been done to insure maximum recovery of files. Do not do anything that causes a 'write' to the disk. Remove the hard drive and put it in a cartridge designed to convert a hard drive into an external drive. Set its jumper to be slave, or follow instructions for the converter device. Connect it to a working computer and boot that computer. If the computer is able to recognize the drive, you are part way home. It may report that one of your drives needs repairing and asks your permission to do so. [When the comptuer crashed, it left a bunch of files open along with temporary files. These need to be cleaned up] When it asks, answer, yes. If the HD is in working order, the good computer should be able to clean up the files and close all open ones. After that, use my computer to look at a listing of the files on it. You may find that most of your data files are intact.

One warning. Before you connect the now external drive to a good computer, make sure that a good anti-virus program is installed and operable. After the external drive has been auto-cleaned, it might be a good idea to immediately scan the drive before anything else.

If this does not work, and it may not since the drive has been re-formated, you next option is to try recovery software or pay dearly for a recovery service.

OK, it was amazing what this program could archive...my wife has
chosen this program because it can recover a reformatted hard drive.
It was scanning for several hours and found over 80'000 lost files.
I'm glad that some pictures could be retrieved which I really missed.
So far so good, we still have to go through everything and sort it out.

I'd recommend you to download Hetman Partition Recovery http://hetmanrecovery.com/.
It can recover files from formatted and repartitioned disks, and undelete files and folders from all types of hard disks, USB flash drives and all types of memory cards such as SD, microSD, SDHC, CompactFlash, Memory Stick etc. Recovered files can be stored on another disk, burned to CD/DVD or uploaded to a remote location via FTP.
