Does anyone have a Tree Trimming Party?

We traditionally have a tree trimming family gathering every year. Just the family. We look forward to everything accept dragging the tree in, setting it up and putting the lights on. [g] Does anyone have any tips on how to make this more painless? We did get a new stand that is much easier to get the tree up, and the past few years we are getting smaller trees which does help...but getting the lights on still seems like such a chore. We usually have dinner and/or appetizers, cocoa/mulled cider as the evening goes on. We break out the Christmas music and decorate the house.

Does anyone else do this?

YES, hubby and myself do!!!! It is just the two of us.....and we have an artificial tree with the lights already on...(I Know...taking the easy way), but we spend the whole night decking the tree, the house, and having treats.....and it is special.
NOPE, no tips on how to get the tree in the house easier....as a young girl, my family did this, and my poor Dad would be the one to drag it in and tie it on and nail it down....but it was always the perfect tree to us......in fact, my Dad just died in August and while those memories are good....his death is still fresh and painful and the happy memories are not helping much yet. So.....take special note of those times with family (tree dragging and all). It is precious.

I'm so sorry about your Dad's passing. It took me a long time after my parents passed, to really feel any happiness remembering times past. It was really just so painful to remember, that I had to avoid it for awhile. Yes, I agree with you...all the time you have to spend with family is very precious and so often we don't appreciate it until we don't have them with us any more.

It sounds like you and your hubby make a night of it and enjoy it like we do at our house. I hope that you will find a way to enjoy as much of the holiday as you can this year...and next year will be better. :-)

Mine doesn't have any flowers either. Last year late Dec. early January mine were covered in Blooms and the Jan/Feb '09 freeze killed them all and almost killed the trees. Couple of them rebloomed around March...but the flowers/fruits died. Luckily the trees survived only to be "nailed" again this year. I will be very curious to see if any of mine have a late bloom. I only have two(inground) that didn't suffer too badly, the rest were "severely damaged". Those I will happy if it just survives. The only one that gave me a few fruits last year was my "Container" Glenn. I don't plan on trimming my mango/lychee trees till mid March...hopefully once I see some new growths I can cut off/trim the dead branches to healthy tissue. Good luck to all!

Here is a sample of our trim. I have enjoyed the look and low maintenance of wood trim for the past 20 years. I'm embarassed to admit, I've only thoroughly washed it a few times, if that, over the past 20 years. My routine has been to vacuum it when dusty looking, and for the most part it has always looked fine. I love the look of painted trim also! We are in the process of putting on a 940 sq ft addition and we plan on painting most of the new woodwork. Wood trim original house and painted in new add on . . . what do you think? Make sense? The addition includes expanding and updating the kitchen. I'm planning on going white trim, hardwood floors, and a combination of wood and painted cabinets. The same for the mudroom/butler's pantry area right off of the kitchen. Lots of beadboard, white subway tiles . . . you probably know the look all too well. We have stained trim throughout the first floor, as well as in the upstairs hallway, which is visible from the foyer. The upstairs bedrooms and baths have white painted trim. This was the compromise we came up with, when DH suddenly announced he was tired of all stained trim (after I bought craftsman/mission influenced dining room furniture) and DD didn't think it would work very well with the purple, gray and black color scheme she envisioned for her room (too bad she's now living in NYC and has left me with a rather unusual guest room). As much as I love my stained trim, I do enjoy the versatility of the white in the bedrooms, so I guess everyone ended up happy. Totally Confused

Does anyone on here have a Cercis canadensis - Eastern Redbud Tree?

I live in the north shore of Massachusetts. I installed a Cercis Canadensis - Rising Sun Redbud last October - a 5 gallon container tree in a full sun area of my front yard - where there is decent drainage. Made it through the winter with no problems, and the tight lavender buds popped in April . The bark and branching is a light grey and it all appears to be healthy - all branches are still pliable. The tiny lime colored leaves that appeared after budding have now morphed into larger, darker leaves. Watering has been a consistent once / wk process, but we did have some pretty intense rainfall about a month ago. I began noticing slight drooping and wilting of the leaves right before the heavy rains we received. Since then, it has been dry and warm, and the leaves have gotten more wilted and curled. At the recommendation of one of our nursery managers, I tried soaking the root area. There has been no improvement, and the smaller leaves are now drying up. No spotting on the leaves or signs of leaf decay, and no insect issues.. If it weren't for the drooping and wilting of leaves, they'd look completely healthy. In other words, the color and structure of the leaves are fine. The Rising Sun Redbud is a relatively new cultivar, so not much to go on re. diseases, insect issues and tree care solutions... My first inclination was that the tree might be suffering from root rot or a root fungus - based on the wilting and curling of leaves. I checked the soil around the root ball, which is cool and moist, but not wet, and there is none of the distinct smell you commonly get with root rot... When soaking the root area, the water pooled then drained fairly quickly. If anyone has any information on the Rising Sun, this particular issue, and a possible solution please pass along.. I usually put it up one dayand put the lights on , and then decorate it the next evening. I have found myself winding the lights on as the tree lays flat (at least the top half!LOL) before I put it in the stand.

Last year, my son made the tree decorating party easy and fun for all of us by doing exactly what kat wa said. He put it up and got all the lights on just the way he wanted them, then the next evening all of us added the ornaments and enjoyed food and beverages while playing Christmas music. It eliminated all the hassle part of it and made for a very enjoyable evening. Luvs
