What do you think of home sales parties?
Comments (58)Well, I had a friend who sold Pampered Chef and she talked me into hosting a party after my first kitchen remodel about five years ago -- I think I was vulnerable because I did want to show off the new kitchen. She is someone who has had a lot of bad luck and never seems to have money for the unexpected or sometimes even the necessities, so I was an easy mark and a softy and agreed to do it. BIG MISTAKE!!! She did a fine job with the presentation, and a good number of my friends came and bought stuff. But the processing of the orders was a nightmare, and she messed things up so badly that it took months and months to straighten them out, and was an embarrassment for me with those who had come and made purchases. It definitely affected our friendship, and I was relieved when she moved away because I was always afraid she was going to ask me to do it again. And while I did get some free stuff (which, other than the toast tongs, I don't use very often) I spent a fortune on the ingredients for the food that was prepared. So, be warned, while attending them can be painful and anxiety-producing for some, hosting the party can take you to a whole other level of torture....See MorePool Party: What do you serve your guests?
Comments (15)Copious amounts of booze to make them forget food! Throw a few tri-tips on the barbie then slice it thin. It's like serving steaks without the need for 20 steak knives and a seat at a table. Another thing that works pretty well is to go to Wing Stop and get one of their bulk hot wing platters. All this helps to avoid the sit down all at one time for eating and people will forage over the dinner period. Makes for smaller plates filled with a course at a time and everyone seems to find a spot to sit. Believe me you don't want to spend the time placing tables for twenty people to sit. Over the years we've had many of pool parties and it helps to have folks bring a side or dessert. You know the whole thing about "what can I bring." We've found that people actually feel more comfortable when they bring something. I know this seems strange but they also seem to help with the layout and cleanup when they're making sure you try their green beans with funions and pickled kippers casserole all the while keeping tabs on their prize tupperware. Fish breath is a small price to pay for the help and a single cocktail will make it as if it never existed. I know we don't subscribe to the Martha Stuart book of party planning but if you don't want to spend a whole lot of time cleaning up and prepping so you can focus on the fun take em up on the "what can I bring." Partygoer:What can we bring? You:Well we have some hot dogs but we're a little short on chateau briand, filet mignon, and caviar. Partygoer:Maybe we can bring some potato salad. You:Wow that will be perfect!!! It will go so well with the hot dogs....See MoreDo birthday parties seem like a competition to you?
Comments (29)I guess I feel pretty lucky--my DD has a small class, only 14 students. I would agree that inviting 40 kids is excessive. I'm assuming there are two classes for SD's grade? Could you do something where she only invites her particular class? Or what about just the girls? My DD's school seems to be low-key. Last year, only a handful of kids had bday parties; a few invited the whole class, but two girls just invited the girls, and I think 2 boys had boys-only parties, as well. We just had an issue with BM about this. SS's bday is coming up and she wanted him to have it at this very expensive indoor trampoline place----the party room (that you HAVE to rent) is $175. Then it is an additional $14.75 PER jumper and there is a 10 person minimum. So that's $322 already. This does not include cake or drinks or goodie bags or anything. There are 23 kids in SS's class and SS's mom felt he should be able to invite the entire class. DH just told her that it is ridiculous to spend $500-600 on a 7 year old's birthday party and that she (or we) would have to find something more reasonable. Well, then they got in a big argument b/c she was saying they would split the cost this year (normally, DH pays) and DH said that wasn't the point----that even if they did cut the cost down the middle, it was just too extravagant of a party. We normally spend $150-$200 for a party. DD's birthday is 6 weeks after SS's, so we have to be financially mindful of planning for two parties relatively close together, as well....See More3rd party fridge organizers? Comments (6)I zone as well. You could use the larger rectangular Ziploc containers to store items you always pull out together, i.e., sandwich making stuff, things like that. I just got a new Samsung French Door fridge, pull-out freezer on bottom w/2 ice makers and I'm in love! I got this style mainly because of my back issues. We're also getting a raised dishwasher & wall oven for that very reason. And drawers in the base cabinets. I also have 2 upright freezers in the pantry close by so that's covered. I will only use the bottom freezer for oft-used items. It's really designed well so there's no issues at all. I just started using the Snapware glass containers & I love them. But, I can see they can be a storage nightmare, especially with their kinda bulky lids. I emptied a china cabinet shelf to store the set but I can see that I will quickly run out of room for storing more. Right now, I use the entree-size Ziploc containers for hubby's lunches. I quantity cook & love to stock the freezer for weeks at a time. HOW would I manage storing enough containers for that???...See MoreDenise Evans
