Do you put guests to work at your parties?
Comments (18)No... please stay out of my kitchen!!! Only the best of friends will know how to help without being intrusive. I've tried to master the "clean as you go" technique so the kitchen doesn't look like a disaster area, and it's MUCH easier to tidy up quickly without someone leaning over my shoulder. When the party is over, please go home and let me worry about whether or not I want that sticky pan to soak overnight. I also must admit to feeling resentful about being made to feel obligated to help clean up at other people's houses. While I am willing to help to a certain extent, I lack patience in dealing with those who do not adhere to the "clean as you go" technique. It would not take the host/hostess away from their guests THAT long if they were to wipe up the sauce spilled on the stove before it dried rock-solid. Can I finally leave a dinner party guilt-free when we get down to their breakfast dishes in the mound in the sink? (That would be the inlaws.) Do I have to wait around for an hour to do the dishes while the hostess finds the perfect-sized container to refrigerate leftovers? (I'm not kidding, this woman was not going to put anything away in a container an inch bigger than it needed to be--and it wasn't because her refrigerators--plural--were full.) We have the best times at get-togethers where the host/hostess have the kitchen under control. With practice, it is possible to keep things neat and orderly (for instance, rinse and store the pots and pans while someone else carries in the serving dishes for dinner; put the dinner dishes in the dishwasher while someone else serves dessert) without taking too much time away from socializing with guests....See Morewhat should I serve for this little party?
Comments (22)Oh, this is so much fun! Beverlyal, wow, thank you so much for all that work. That's a whole cookbook. I do think a tea sounds nice. I bet my friends will like it. I won't worry too much about leftovers. We can eat them the next day or so and give the rest to the shelter. Besides, it will be a pretty small group, so I can plan it so there won't be too much leftover anyway. I love little sandwiches! I will probably make more sweets and fewer sandwiches only because I can do the sweets way ahead and freeze. I want to be able to run around with FMTO and her mom, not be stuck in the kitchen for days in addition to what I'll be doing for Passover. As for tea ... How would you serve it? I do have a silver tea/coffee service (actually my mom's on rather permanent loan). But the tea and coffee get ice cold in them! I mostly use the pots for flower arrangements, but I use the sugar bowl, creamer, and "slops bowl" a lot (the last for artificial sweetener packets -- how tacky!). Anyway, I'm guessing more people will want wine than coffee or tea. The "tea" in "tea party" will be more an indicator of the type of party than of the beverage service, I guess. I will probably just have hot water and an assortment of tea bags available for the tea drinkers, coffee in the coffee maker, and a few bottles of wine; maybe sangria or one kind of cocktail in a pitcher. I love the champagne idea, too! Does anyone know about freezing petit fours? Would it depend on the type of icing?...See MoreWhat to serve with party sub???
Comments (9)When we had potluck as a group function, the signup sheet was sectioned into food types. Like meat dishes, salads, sandwiches, desserts, and one for drinks/chips combined. Then the individual person would put their name in the section as to what they were bringing. So I think, what you are asking is, that you want to suggest what to bring in those groups????? and then let the individual signup for it??????...See MoreParty Time - What to Serve in Sterno trays
Comments (3)What about a nice frittata? Typically a way I get rid of leftovers but reheats very well and can be cut into nice squares or wedges for ease of serving. Cooked spaghetti, bound with in a egg custard base, flecked with color from roasted red peppers, some spinach and herbs. Another thing I like to serve, because it is easy to pick up is stromboli, bread dough into which has been rolled your choice of cheese veggies and meat. My kids even take this in their lunch box, a favorite is pepperoni, spinach, red pepper, and provolone. If you are making your own bread dough, it is nice to fleck it with basil....See Moreparadigmdawg
